Why? You sometimes see it with players that have been sold that a club can match a bid to buy them back.

Because it would seriously compromise the naming rights process. If Levy wanted to maximise the value being obtained, he'd want to be discussing it with several potential "bidders", all of which would be big/global brands with massive legal budgets.

There is absolutely no way any of them would sign up to a process whereby they bid, and this bid would be shared with a competitor. The bidding companies legal teams would never sign off on such a process.

I don't doubt that HSBC, in their capacity as lender, will have visibility of the size of the naming rights deal. But in their capacity as potential bidder on naming rights, I'd be extremely surprised. There'd be non disclosure agreements galore on something like this.

I'm not sure you can equate the buy back of a player with a near £1bn project.

I mean that just has to be right from a sensible commercial view. I agree with @MattyP, and not just because he's a beautiful man.

Not arguing. Was genuinely curious.

Would be surprised and disappointed if it's HSBC.

They haven't exactly got the best reputation and have been caught up in a lot of suspect dealings in the past 5-10 years.

Edit*

I'm not gunna sit here and list companies that I think would be better, but for anyone that isn't clued up, someone's posted a few things below on these 'scandals.'

Apart from some charities which major organisations have a whiter than white reputation?

Most multi-billion pound businesses have got some stink around them though. Generally you don't get to be that powerful without shitting on someone or something. I really don't care who the sponsor is, apart from one of those disgusting Middle East investment authorities . That would be the worst.

Don’t see why HSBC having last bid is so far fetched. Either they’d better it or not what difference does it make. Pretty sure the club just want as much money as possible. As long as it’s a reputable company that doesn’t have a silly name I doubt they really care who it is as long as money is good.

I think if HSBC has addressed the Mexican drug gangs problem, ie, problems outside of finance they shouldn’t be involved with, it’ll be a fairly mundane sponsor. I mean really? A bank? Its so boring I might fall asleep typing this. Or go and shoot 300 students and hide the bodies using my plus account. That’ll wake me up

I'm convinced the last bit, which I've bolded, is entirely false. No way a company the size of Tottenham would run a process with such a clause, no matter whether they are principle lenders or not.
It does seem unlikely, but it's possible that HSBC made an offer some time ago, when they first sorted the financing, and spurs said "OK, but we'll still need to go to market nearer the time, but we'll give you last refusal"?

HSBC is fine. It could be Pornhub for all I care as long as they pony up the cash.

This wouldn't be the same 'fine' HSBC that facilitated the laundering of $881m of Mexican and Columbian drug cartels by any chance, and who were subsequently fined £1.4Bn?

Or the same HSBC who were also fined for contravening international sanctions by secretly dealing with Iran, Libya, Sudan, Burma and Cuba?

And was it not HSBC who admitted to helping wealthy clients evade tax through its private Swiss banking arm and were subject to allegations of rigging foreign exchange and precious metals markets?

Or the same bank that's expecting a $1bn fine for its role in mis-selling toxic mortgage products in the US ahead of the 2007/08 financial crisis and is currently being investigated by UK regulators for its alleged links to money laundering by the billionaire Gupta family, and whose links to president Jacob Zuma are at the heart of a political storm in South Africa?

I don't wish to be a party pooper - just pointing out that HSBC are anything but 'fine'.

On a separate issue, do you think the stadium bars with support local breweries such as Beavertown or Five Points?

There's going to be a micro-brewery in the stadium so you would have thought so. Then again if Carlsberg or someone offer Levy loads of dosh for exclusivity, who knows?
