Hi Guys,

We've done a piece looking at the impact Davinson Sanchez has had on the Spurs team.

"We’ve also taken a look at expected goals against (xGA). This stat weighs up the high quality chances a team concedes and puts a number on it. It’s a way to judge whether you’ve been fortunate over the entire season or whether you have a mean defence.

The xGA for Spurs during the 2015/16 season was 37.08 which works out at 0.97 per 90 minutes. They improved last season with the xGA90 coming down to 0.88. Pochettino’s managed to improve his defensive unit this time around even without being able to call upon Alderweireld and Wanyama. The xGA90 so far for this campaign is 0.81. For further context, in the games Sánchez has played the xGA90 is 0.72."

Sanchez right at home in the Spurs defence

Cheers,

Sam

That's better football Whispers. Be more about shedding light as opposed to Sky led garbage.

Interesting to see that stat and given the poor recent few games he has had this could have been much better

Isn't that a bit of a judgment call rather than a bonafide stat? XGA is 'expected' so what parameters are used to divine this number? Isn't there a parallel stat that looks back across actual goals conceded in the games played with and without Sanchez that then gives an average?

XG (expected goals) is a measure of the quality of chances created/conceded.

So it can give a good indication of if a team is under/over performing when compared with goals scored and conceded.

It's actually a decent stat, as you could attribute a lot of goals conceded from worldies as unlucky and not really a true measure of how good/poor a defence is.

Saying that, we only conceded 26 goals last season - we're on 21 goals conceded currently

Perhaps Lloris was better at saving chances last season?

Perhaps the quality of attacking players in the EPL has increased this season (they're taking their chances against us?)

What's the goals scored comparison?
Are we just setting up a bit more defensively? We've spent a good part of this season playing 3(5) at the back plus 2 defensive(ish) midfielders.

Reckon that's done to Missing Wanyama more than anything, also losing Walker and playing in the open spaces of Wembley as opposed to WHL can't have helped.

That's all true

I hastily constructed my reply and completely forgot about those factors
