We do need to get an alternative for Dembele as sadly he isn’t showing he can string together a run of performances.

Wanyama also really needs to start the next game, I hope Poch doesn’t continue picking Dier over him.

And no Sissoko as he doesn’t offer any attacking qualities.

Was just about to create a new thread with a link to this, in order to keep a single post to discuss his subs, but not sure it's necessary.

That last paragraph is astounding: 99 substitutions this season have resulted in ONE goal and ONE assist.

It's quite remarkable that for such a fantastic coach that his subs are being compared to a Football Manager player, attempting to keep the players' fitness above 85%. It's the one side of Pochettino's game I actively dislike (putting it lightly).

How can the subs getting such little game time be expected to make their mark in a game where we have absolutely zero control? Llorente - as poor as some of his touches have been - must surely be wondering why the fuck he bothered to make the move to us.

Very disappointing result. Southampton were there for the taking, but poor play and poor decisions from the bench really hurt us. Some thoughts:

Our crossing needs to be better.

Dele's form is still very inconsistent. You know he has ability, he knows he has ability, but he is getting to almost Sissoko levels of just dribbling into a player, thinking that they will melt away simply because the shining star that is Alli is here. Maybe a lack of alternates hurt us here, but needs to mentally adjust his game and improve his decision making (when to quickly pass off and when to try to take someone on)

Poch and his subs - always too late, largely ineffectual. He has also tried to change shape to a 4-3-1-2, which just made us so narrow up top.

Sissoko - I mean, jeez louise. I can understand that he is there to do a job, maybe help Aurier out given he is new to the league (although that didn't really work for Saints goal) but when you should be taking it to the opposition, he should be the guy being pulled because he is at best a work horse. He doesn't offer a real offensive threat, nor secure us defensively so others can be more expressive. Still played in every game this season!

Very frustrating game, performance and result.

It was quite astounding how it took 70 minutes to make the first change yesterday. I mean it got to a point in the match yesterday where I was watching the players warming up to see if they'd be called to strip off as much as I was the actual match because we were crying out for a change. I understand giving a bit of time after half time to see if anything changes after you may have given additional instructions but it was clear as day that it was exactly the same. Should have been proactive and made a few changes after 60 minutes. If we made a double change of Llorente and Lamela coming on at that point I could at least appreciate that we did what we could to really try and change the game and take it to them.

The stat doesnt tell the full picture, a significant number of those subs would have been when we were winning.

Poch has an issue with making subs when we are chasing the game. He tends to make weird negative moves that dont offer any additional attacking impotus. And dont get me fucking started on sissoko.

I just don't see the point in us signing Llorente. I feel for the bloke. Yes Conte wanted him, presumably as a back up to Morata instead of Batshuayi but would have no doubt had more game time with Chelsea.

I know it's never going to be possible to find a Kane replacement and he's 100% undroppable, but games like yesterday would have been perfect for him to give their defence something else to worry about. If nothing else to occupy their defenders and give Kane space.

He's trusted against Madrid away but can't get 20 mins against Southampton when we need a goal in a must win game? Wouldn't blame him for handing in a transfer request immediately.

That change cant be made safely unless Southampton werent offering much threat, they were were.

That's what the coaching staff are paid for. We shouldn't need to be making safe subs against a team in the bottom 3.

The last 10 mins were there for the taking and if he put Llorente on for Son he could have partnered him up top like Son was.

Can't for the life of me, unless he was affected by his flu, think of a reason why Llorente wasnt introduced. Especially with Trippier on the pitch.

Its clear its a huge failing of Poch and it has cost us this season.

I know it sounds naive to say lets just put our attacking options on as early as we can and things will be better but we just needed to change something. We watched almost a whole match of us playing dog shit and little was seemingly done to try and shake and wake us up a bit. Plus we needed the win really.

If Poch takes off Son in the 70th something minute again when we need a goal I'm going to puke. Son has excelled in his entire time here scoring gigantic clutch goals. Along with Kane they are the last 2 players that should ever be coming off in that situation.
A number of players were supposedly suffering the effects or after effects of this virus thing, we have no idea who but it's quite possible Son was among them. I know it's an unpopular view, but on this occasion I don't see the need to criticise, because we just don't know. But that's just my onions.

What is a clutch goal?

If they hadn’t gone for a sunshine break the team might not of come down with the flu. Fucking awful decision to take them away !!!
