This guy should be at Bristol or a team of that ilk who play something similar to us, if he's let stay at Villa until May it'll be a bloody disgrace and near incompetence by whoever makes such calls. May well cost him his career here, sadly.

If he is of the quality that you are banging on about, he should be head and shoulders above everyone irrespective of the club hes joined and should be the first name of the team sheet..

There's not much point in him being in Villa. Almost no point if he doesn't start (came on at 77mins today). Recall.

He isnt the first name on Villa's team sheet because he doesnt suit Villa's playing style. No matter how good a player is you need others to play off of especially when youre a young lads thats played in a pass and move side for all his career. That's why some top youngsters struggle at clubs that just decide to play hoofball.

Plenty of talk on the Villa forum that he hasn't got anywhere near the required desire or workrate, especially when playing CM, and that his defensive discipline is poor.

That sounds a lot like the criticism he's received here tbh, and one of the primary reasons people have mentioned in regards to Pochettino not playing him in his so-called best position.

he's only played one game as a cm which was on his first start for them vs colchester so i don't know how they've come to that conclusion. he then had a few games playing in a 4141 kind of formation nominally alongside hourihane and with whelan behind them but he was always the one being asked to join up with the striker. then he played as a #10 for a long stretch of games, lost his way a bit and has been playing on the wing more recently and even up front as a #9 in one game.

when he plays further forward i do think his application off the ball plummets and i won't defend him for that, i've even mentioned it many times here in the past. here's a post i made a couple of years ago which illustrates my point better -

i know i've mentioned it enough times now but there's such a stark contrast between onomah the cm and onomah the am. even just off the ball he works noticeably harder when playing deep, it's as though he recognises the responsibility and puts in more of a shift whereas when he's further forward he might press a defender but once it's past him he'll go into stroll mode. on the ball all of his best work is done in the central third of the field, there were a couple of runs in the 2nd half today where he got the ball deep, beat a player and then drove forward 50-60 yards to set up a good chance. playing him in the final third of the field just exposes all of his weaknesses and hides his biggest strengths

if you only see his performances playing further forward then i get why there'd be a reluctance to move him to a position that requires far more defensive discipline but whenever he has played there he's never let anyone down. if he was such a liability in that position then the u20s wouldn't have won the world cup and he wouldn't be starting games for the u21s under a safety-first and defensive-minded coach like aidy boothroyd. at some point in onomah's career a manager is going to take a chance on him there and imo they will be greatly rewarded, I just hope that's with us and not elsewhere.

I do not understand the point of loaning him to a club that plays the opposite sort of football to us and doesn't play him in his proper position.

he is the scapegoat for most Villa fans, he isn't one of theirs, so it's easy to put all the blame on him.

We don't know exactly what he is being instructed to do when he does play, and I do wonder if Josh needs responsibility forced on him to get him to step up (rather than being encouraged to take the responsibility/opportunity).

I believe he can become a very good player so would like to see him back, and unless this loan is being treated as a bit of a reality check - get your head together because top level football does not come easily, its hard in the Championship never mind Premiership type thing - then he should be recalled and either competing with Sissoko for game time (my preference) or sent out elsewhere to get proper minutes

I wouldn't recall him. Let's see if he can pull himself out of this and prove himself at Villa. The entire point of going on loan is to experience the real world, and if we just bring him back because his club aren't doing what we want them to do it's not going to do him any good. If he is *that* good in CM, then he should prove it and win a place in the centre of Villa's midfield. I too find it mystifying that he seems great there for England, but his club managers have refused to play him in CM - but presumably there is a reason for that. There's obviously something he's not doing, or doesn't have in his game. It's up to Josh to knuckle down and prove he deserves to play in central midfield. If he could do that, the loan would be a great learning experience, if he just comes back because it isn't working out he will have achieved very little.

Think he could have offered us something off the bench v Saints....

But unlikely to get a look in with Eriksen and Winks back

To be fair, he’s got no chance of replacing Dembele, Dier and Sissoko in our midfield. There’s no way you’ll get them three out of that treacle.
