yep especially as it had all been really positive from JJ as well, now looks like zilch.....again
As I said on day one this window was going to be quiet as far as incomings were concerned. It's all about the Summer and getting our long term targets in for then. If we could get one now that would be a plus, but making sure we are all set and ready early in the 2018 Summer window has always been the bigger picture. New stadium, new sponsors and a huge worldwide spotlight on the club. It will certainly dull things(not transfers) come September if we don't have CL, but while our primary targets are still gettable, we won't be rushing out buying players just to get numbers in.

The one club we seem to have a really good relationship with and that Levy has not (seemingly) ticked off in past negotiations is Ajax. Herc has mentioned Kluivert from Ajax and sorted of hinted (I think) at one or two others from there. Hopefully some business can be completed with them as by the sounds of it, all selling clubs are playing games at the moment. It is a sellers market so they have the leverage with all of the new money and by the sounds of it, the selling clubs know it.

Thanks as always. Bit concerned about being able to attract our top targets this summer if we don't get CL.

the club are taking a big gamble without strengthening this window, if we fail to get into the top 4 our summer targets will no doubt look less likely

Do you know how much money we have to strengthen and how much clubs are asking for their players?
We are not city or utd we cannot pull £100m out of our arses. We just paid out £200m last month for the new stadium.
Itk said it would be a quiet window but we'd do a deal if we could. Most of the work seems to be for the summer (when we get money for tv deals etc...).

I guess in the aftermath of bad news, it just always seems like we are planning on getting our long term targets and are in a good position to just be gazumped by someone moving more quickly and with more money and we don't get it over the line... Viewing things when in a negative mindset doesn't let you see a particularly balanced picture...

Plus I don't understand why we wouldn't spend bigger money now on our primary targets to try and push for the CL, becuase the financial difference of missing out on the CL is probably worse than paying a premium... I'm sure it's not that simple though..

If you want the talent, you have to pay for it in this day and age. If Bordeaux are the team that want it up front give it to them. Like Poch told the agents he thinks he can make him one of the best players in Europe in three years. If you believe that, get the deal done.

Are we thinking Hercules is saying he's still optimistic about Malcom or about the club in general?

Maybe us the fans and the club have different thoughts about what a "top target" are.
Well, I'll take anyone who improves us, regardless of where he's from or whether I've heard of him. Like Sanchez.

Not what I said. Hopefully most of our business will be done before we know next seasons CL outcome.

Some players just aren't available in January for the very reason you give for us to strengthen now. In most cases we are talking about a clubs best player, of course clubs are not willing to let their best players go half way through the season with stuff to play for, because they can't be replaced.

Agree, I think many of us see a 'top target' as a ready made world class/ nearing world class player that will come in and make a near enough immediate difference and be a (cliche) game changer. Whereas I think we have to understand that the Club aren't willing to invest like that to bring that caliber of player in and instead a 'top target' to them is a highly rated younger player for cheaper money that they hope to develop, over time, in to a very good player.

The way Herc worded that, and the very recent report of interest in Neres, leads me to believe the hinted at guy from Ajax is Neres.

For avoidance of doubt, I was just expressing my own concern - I wasn't suggesting that you'd said or implied that. Thank for you for the info, as always.

Easily a fixture in the top 5 in the country, challenged for the title the past two seasons, in the last 16 of the Champions League this season, several of Europe’s best players in our squad, yup sir I make you absolutely right! I guess you also remember the 90s as well as I do. We survived it together man!

Oh, wait...

More seriously, yes JJ’s news sucks but this is why we shouldn’t count our chickens until they hatch, it leads to frustration and disappointment. Best to just focus on what happens on the pitch, be glad that we receive information from time to time and let the rest unfold.
I think you took my comment a little more serious than I intended it to be. And no, I don't remember that much from the 90's since I was tiny human monster back then.

Trix's comments make me think this has been discussed at length by the top brass and that CL qualification wasn't essential this season. Maybe given a year of grace due to the Wembley situation?

Its a strange one, would you forgo CL qualification (despite my time of the month rantings, its far from out of the question) to land talent like Pulisic in the summer, or spunk our budget now when players are extraordinarily more expensive, on lesser talent?

This is always going to be the case in my view. It's so incredibly hard to sign players in January unless you are willing to pay massively over the odds in an already inflated market, like Liverpool did with Van Dijk and like Utd have done with Sanchez (in terms of agents fees and wages) or ironically unless you're a smaller club looking at much cheaper options. We're effectively a victim of our position in that, on the field we're competing above our financial capability due to our brilliant rise under Poch but off the field we can't yet compete for the kinds of players that we would need to maintain that position.

To my mind it's why the January window should be abolished. All it really does right now is give an unfair advantage to the super rich clubs. The move has been made to bring the summer deadline forward to before the season begins, which was the right thing to do. Next they need to drop the winter window and maybe have some sort of emergency loan window instead.

Cute.

But I'd bet steak dinners.. medium rare , that we leave it till the last 2 weeks of the window with the league up a running again till we push through with targets we really need/want . Which will inevitably lead to frustration

Club isn't gonna change its Modus operandi. It's the same thing every year, like being trapped in a space time anomaly.

But it's gotten us this far from the 90s midtable current west ham level of Meh so I can't argue with it

Goes to show you can have a very strategic plan in place but it only takes a greedy agent or club who change their selling price to completely scupper that.
The agent power especially has escalated to a ridiculous proportion recently me thinks.. Is there a cap or something of a ruling that restrict some of their participation or commission? If not this sport is gonna become an entertainment industry very soon!
