Heard this for the last 4-5 transfer windows as far as getting top four is concerned, including Everton ffs. It's not all about spending money.

That's a value point.

I would argue we were in a far better position in terms of league position and the state of rivals though.

The proof will be in the pudding and we shall see where we are come May.

And if you can't see that we're still a long way off competing with them financially, then I can't help you.

But what I don’t understand is we don’t even try to compete... we know we will have much greater revenue in 2/3 years so what’s the issue with making good investments now. No company will pay massive commercials for naming rights etc if we are in the Europa

The policy makes no sense... look at the players we have missed out on that are now worth double. I see nothing from Levy or Pochetinho which tells me that it hurts them when we don’t win anything. Look at Conte and Mourinho get millions spent and still push their board to spend more. That’s because the hate losing.
I hate the “I am happy with the squad and I am calm” press conferences as it strikes me as satisfaction.

We're not backed by a billionaire oligarch willing to spend endless amounts of cash or the best commercially run sports team in the world backed by a billionaire family willing to spend endless amounts of cash. If you're going to take issue with someone, take issue with Lewis. Neither Levy or Poch hold the pursestrings, and you're purely speculating that you see nothing from them when we don't win anything. I'm sure they don't love it but are realistic with their set of circumstances. It would be awful for our club if they made their dissatisfaction there for the supporters to see, as they'd both most likely be fired.

After jj's news I still regularly catch up on the thread, hoping to see "Changed again; it's all back on!" from one of our brilliant ITKs.

Why do I do this to myself, every window? :(

I think we’ve reached the natural limit of Levy’s low risk/high reward transfer policy. It’s brought us from mid-table to Big Six, which is a huge achievement, but it won’t take us any further, and won’t deliver the major trophies we all crave.

It’s time to start spending money on second tier talent (I am aware we can’t compete with City or Utd), rather than obsessing over sell-on value. The market has changed, and so have the expectations placed on the club. Levy has been caught cold by those changes imo, and needs to catch up fast.

I don't know whether we obsess over sell-on value or not, but if we don't it simply diminishes the amount we have to spend, so works against the money = success theory.

Anyway, where do you place a player like Malcom in all this? Would he be a good buy?

But we basically spend no money that’s the point... The club should be honest and just say “we saved £300 million over the last five years instead of buying players as we needed it for Stadium” and the set expectations going forward by saying “don’t expect any increase in transfer spending while we pay off the Stadium for the next 3/4 seasons” etc....

We currently don’t spend at the level of most other clubs in percentage terms. Net spend is the lowest in the league and has been basically zero for the last five seasons. Even a net +£30 a season million could have pushed us on ...

Isn’t Liverpool also a no net spend club ? They just spend the money they get from the regular sale of their best player every season or so.

Thought this post on reddit comparing Malcom to other 20 year old wingers (specifically Leon Bailey, Federico Chiesa, Mikel Oyarzabal, and Richarlison) might be of interest to some. If you're wondering what the statistics mean, the author has a long explanation in the comments.

The upshot is that, in the author's opinion, Malcom is the best of the bunch. This is the brief synopsis:

"Malcom: Elite long-range finisher, world class ability from outside the box. He'd also assist far more if Bordeaux's players were better finishers. Very important to their team and is reflected well in all these stats. You can argue he's in a weaker league, but I feel these numbers show why he's so desired by top clubs - he's better than you might think he is based on goals/assists."

Arsene said today that arsenal can't compete with the Manchester clubs for transfers because the bank restrictions on the stadium!

That's scary they're still paying it off, I'll be a middle-aged man before spurs can spend without selling if we're similar :0

So obviously the meeting with his agent on Monday did not go in our favor.

No one can compete with Manchester clubs no matter what. Think Arsenal have been spending about 50m net each season on average. I'd take that to be honest, at the minute we're just spending what we earn so an extra 50m spent on top would massively improve this squad.

Where will that come from?

Brazilian journalist seems to think we are chasing David Neres from ajax as an alternative to Malcom.

Don't know how reliable he is but maybe just putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5

The additional 40-50m? Well you'd hope from the stadium we're building. We'll be more than doubling our match day revenue. Yes we obvs have to pay for the thing but we'll be getting sponsorship, NFL money, additional commercial partners, tv deal is about to go up again.
So I'm sure there'll be an extra 40-50m there minimum that we could use on transfer fees if we wish to. Possible though we might choose to use it on wage bill to protect our assets though.

I suspect Arsenal’s issue is that their owners have stockpiled £300 million in cash to help them secure loans for other businesses.
