Erik Lamela: Pochettino's stance on the Spurs star amid Southampton and Roma exit links
The Argentine has been linked with a deadline day move

The transfer deadline day rumour mill has sparked into overdrive with stories linking Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Erik Lamela with a move to Premier League side Southampton.
Some reports have claims that the Argentine is a loan target for the struggling Saints, with a swap deal mooted for Mario Lemina.

That follows differing reports that emerged earlier this week from Italy, one suggesting that Inter Milan are preparing a move for the 25-year-old for a summer deal.
Another story claimed that Lamela's old club Roma are eyeing up a move for their former player on loan this month with a view to a permanent deal.
Inter's director of football Walter Sabatini signed Lamela for Roma from River Plate in summer 2011 and then sold him to Tottenham two years later as part of the 'magnificent seven' bought with the Gareth Bale money. It is claimed that Sabatini is keen on reuniting with the Argentine.
The report linking Roma with the player alleges that former Spurs and Roma sporting director Franco Baldini will be used as an intermediary to broker a deal between the two clubs.
With Spurs set to announce a £25m deal for PSG winger Lucas Moura before the transfer window closes on Wednesday and Tottenham having a maximum of 17 foreign players in their Champions League squad with however replaces the loaned out Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, the three sides may feel they have an increased chance of snaring the player.

However, while the clubs may have an interest in Lamela, football.london understands that Spurs have no intention of parting company with the Argentine.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of the player and is delighted to have him back after Lamela missed 13 months through problems with both of his hips. During that time out the player returned to Roma for some ultimately unsuccessful treatment on the problem before surgery was required.

Pochettino is easing the midfielder slowly back into first team life after such a long time out, with Heung-Min Son's fine form meaning Lamela does not need to be rushed back into starting regular games.

The Argentine is expected to be offered a new contract, as his current one ends next summer, if he can prove his fitness and form for the remainder of the season.

Lamela said last week in an interview with the Guardian that he is happy in north London.
"I’m happy at Tottenham," he said. "If not, I would have left. I feel a part of the club, I’m at home here. I am not thinking about how long is left on my contract."

For now Spurs and Pochettino certainly have no intention of letting Lamela go anywhere. The deal for Lucas is expected to be the last bit of business for Tottenham in terms of first team incomings and outgoings in the January transfer window.

Want him to stay, showed in minutes how he can unlock a defence with a quick through ball the way very few can. His disguised back heel was outrageous.

He deserves the chance to fight for his place after this past year. He has the ability and the determination. Think he could be a real asset to us in the second half of the season.

Agree. No need to get rid unless he wants to leave as he’s not getting played as much as he’d like but if we are to fight on 3/4 fronts for next few years he will for sure get minutes.

I think essentially this would mean, in practice, the chance to prove he can stay healthy and match-fit for a decent stretch of time.
If he does get a new contract I'd assume that we won't be going back for Malcom in the summer.

I wouldn't assume that at all. Quality from the bench is where we are lacking. Keeping players happy while they are on the bench is the downside but that's a different issue.

I'm a fan of Lamela, but even if you're not, there's no point in selling him at the moment. As I'm sure I've said before, his value right now is rock bottom because he's yet to show whether/how the injury has affected him. Even if you want him out it make more sense to sell once he's back to playing properly so we get full value for him.

Or his value could still diminish even further over the next 18 months? I don’t feel his value actually is at rock bottom. Granted it may not be mega but if we sell him in the summer then there would be some value surely?

In the summer maybe, if he gets game time and does well. But coming off the back of 18 months out and major surgury? That's definitely going to put off potential buyers or at least drive the price down.

I’m no expert, but after next summer surely then his value plummets whatever as he will be in the last year of his contract? Irrespective of whether he actually plays or not. We need to offer a new contract soon or sell in the summer imo.

His contract expires in 2020 I believe. So two years from this summer coming up.

Just read that his contract is until 2018 but we have a 2 year option. This has led to the “I’m happy at Spurs comments” lately.
