So if the player receiving the ball is behind the player playing it, he's offside. I'm not entirely sure I've ever seen that given. I should pay more attention.

Hopefully this explains what I mean. Player 1 crosses the ball (red line) towards player 2. Everyone misses the ball it goes across the penalty area untouched. Player 3 who was in an offside position when the ball was played by player 1, then runs back to collect the lose ball. This would be offside. Obviously a rare enough situation but it is possible when the ball is played "backwards".

It's a pretty rare situation, but the offside law doesn't say anything about the direction of the ball. It only matters if a player was in an offside position when a teammate last touched the ball and if that player then gets involved with play.

A player can also be called for offside in their own half of the field, if they were in an offside position in the opponents half when a teammate played the ball, and then they run back into their own half to receive the pass/clearance. Also rare, but possible.
Are you sure about that?
If the direction of the ball passed doesn't matter then when 2 players break forward with just the keeper to beat you'd be unable to pass the ball without being offside and interfering.

I can't believe the press haven't picked up the fact that Liverpool are really West Bromwich Albion. Only difference is the can afford to have Mane and Salah up front. 8 behind the ball and hoof forward to Salah. Klopp has the cheek to criticise teams for doing exactly that.

If the player is behind (or level) the ball when his teammate passes it, he would be onside no matter which direction the ball went.

all though I think both decisions were correct - especially the second that led to the equalizer, I have to say after the excitement has passed that if I were a Liverpool supporter Id have probably been pissed off, too. but fug 'em.

Im not sure you're correct there to be honest.
Interesting though lol.
I dont think even the refs and linesman are sure in situations like that either.

I think its older farts like myself who have it ingrained in their heads that its about the ball being played forward and received that are getting muddled the most.
I'm slowly getting what @cwy21 is saying lol and I think he's right.

Unfortunately its my bed time soon and I'll have forgotten by tomorrow.
Still, nice while it lasted.
Bloody mess though innit.

But yeah... were both stone wall pens :cautious:

It's a pretty arcane example and to be fair, a lot of grassroots refs would get it wrong. Of course they're also the type of ref who thinks you need to "put a name to it" and don't realize obstruction was removed/changed in 1997. Refereeing is an interesting part of the sport to be involved it.

I imagine a large chunk of professional players that argue with the referee and linesman wouldn't have a bloody clue either.

I am literally loving how salty the pool fans are getting over this.

I have been fishing for bites all over the shop.

Have caught some absolute gems over the 2 days.

I have come to realise a few things......

Klopp is a Massive wanker,
Pool fans are literally "always the victim"
And I have 're found my hatred for Liverpool.

The only top 6 club i dont hate with an massive passion would be city but that is only because I don't hear a peep from them on my Facebook anymore now they're the best team in the county.......strange that

So @cwy21 am I right here lol?
If you're just inside the opps half and in an offside position, and the ball is passed just backwards by someone on half way line and you go get it from an offside position you'd be offside to a backwards pass in your own half lol. Same as your photo but on half way line o_O
My head hurts.

Correct. Also, in 2016 the position of the restart for offside changed and this was added to the laws.

If an offside offence occurs, the referee awards an indirect free kick where the offence occurred, including if it is in the player’s own half of the field of play.

Fuck me, the Telegraph reporting there might be an independent inquiry into the awarding of the first penalty. Get a fucking life you bellends

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football...-moss-misguided-ask-tv-help-awarding-penalty/
I mean generally it doesn't matter except now it will be twice as hard for us to get a penalty because of the braincells that will melt across the UK about illuminati and whatnot.

Though I do chuckle about Telegraph releasing an opinion piece about the calls then doing a follow up news story about the calls being under review with no supporting evidence other than citing said opinion piece.
