Considering Sanchez almost cost us v scouse with his headless performance and was a Lacazette crap miss away from costing v scum I’d have to question that belief, I’m not saying Sanchez can’t become a great for us but at the moment he’s inconsistent and it’s night and day between him and Tobe, who if is available he should be starting every time. Not sure if any politics is playing out here but wouldn’t surprise me as Toby has said he was ready, and not having a dig at Levy, if he is involved it may be for the best for our club, but on the face of it does seem like more than a fitness issue, if just fitness I would expect him to at least make bench. Unless of course he’s reinjured, then ignore the rest...
Sanchez is not error free, by any means, but the drop in quality when Toby was out last season and this is night and day.

I think people forget last season - Toby missed almost 2 months with injury.

1st game back, he came on as a sub on December 7, played 90 minutes on December 11, and 90 minutes again on the 14th and then proceeded to start the next 27 matches of the season.
Who were those against, if you don’t mind me asking?

December 7 - sub appearance - home to CSKA - Europa match
December 11 - @ Man United
December 14 - home to Hull

But - he did miss the next two matches (I missed those looking at his game log) - December 18, and 28th, before coming back and playing 90 on the 1st, 4th, and 8th

Significant difference in the nature of the injuries.

High grade hamstring strains/tears are more prone to re-injury through fatigue and without perfect conditioning compared to the pinched nerve, or whatever it was, last season.

Obviously at an elite level you would expect that he has gone through all the proper rehab and strengthening procedures, but that won't be able to fix the mental side, like having the confidence to reach 100% speed without feeling like it's going to snap the hamstring off the bone, which can be a massive barrier with hamstring injuries.

obviously the intensity of playing against Newport is different from playing against Juventus?
we rushed wanyama back to the team (against chelski) and it turned out making him injured for another 3 months

amazing the lengths some of our own fans got to sell one of our own. I still believe that before we step into our new stadium, he and whole bunch of our core players will have signed shiny new contracts.

He could be on the bench where it's unlikely he'll play though. He's also already played a full 90 so clearly he has the confidence in his body and the coaches do too and he's been training for more than just the last week. I'm not saying that he should definitely play but not traveling at all can't be just down to his fitness.

If my best CB had been "fit" for 3 weeks prior to the match, he'd certainly be part of the squad- just as rose, lamela and wanyana were earlier in the season and jan, kane and toby have been in the past couple of years.

if he's not going/have to start then he shouldnt travel at all. Travel puts a lot of stress on the body and with the type of severe hamstring injury toby picked up, and the confidence we have in our squad there is no need to risk reinjury.

IMO he should be starting but I can see why he wouldn't. Sanchez has been great but he's having a little downturn at the moment (which is fine, he's 21) and if Toby has played a full 90 and been training for 3 weeks now then I think he's going to be as ready as he'll ever be to re-take his position in the 11.

really agree, just if there is even the slightest chance of reinjuring because of travel stress then it's not worth the risk imo.

And i think the fact Sanchez cant dwell too long on his performances, he just has to jump himself right back into the mix against top oppostion will be priceless expierence for him.

I fear he will sold on in the summer. He's on 50k a week ffs. The summer after he'll have a 25mil clause in his contract so if he's not signing with us we'll cash in this year.

If VVD is 75mill then Toby is at least that. He is older and on less contract. There's another reason we've put so much faith in Sanchez this season. I reckon everyone inside the club know he's off. Pity.

He's obviously not fit enough to play in a match at this level. He certainly didn't look 100% against Newport. Taking him to Italy would be a complete waste of time. Far better that he stays at home and continues to work on his fitness.

Plus even if he is not fit enough he should still be travelling for the social comradery support element of this fixture. I remember both Verts and rose travelling to Europe with the team even though both were in casts

Maybe that was because you can't work on your match fitness in a cast . Toby is close to a full return, but won't be rushed. Quite right too.

Poch has tough decisions to make now that everyone’s fit and that means senior players missing out on squad places. I was wondering what Poch would do on Saturday with a fully fit squad and he left out winks, Llorente, and Alderweireld. I guess Tony not being 100% fit is justification for leaving him out. Last season was different as we didn’t have the depth in the squad that we have now.

I started reading the telegraph article and thought it looked like something from an agent but then I read the only substantiated part which said they contacted his agent who declined to comment so it's obviously a lot of conjecture.
We don't actually know how Toby came through the cup tie against Newport, he might have had a reaction or felt the effort more than we realised in which case it is right that he stays behind and works on his strength and fitness, it could also mean Poch is taking the FA cup seriously and wants him fit for Rochdale.

I'm not sure why everyone's surprised. Under poch we always bring players back from injury really slowly, and with a mostly fit squad we have enough players who haven't just come back from 3 months out

We've had ITK stating that contracts are to be looked at over the coming months.

IIRC, it was said that wages offered would imcrease in conjunction with moving to the new stadium.

How much he now wants, who knows.

Is it about silverware, does he see a move as one last big payday with maybe more of a chance of titles etc.

Does Champions league next season have an impact on him renewing or not.

Is he just being protected after his injury and wanted to concentrate on his rehab before contract renegotiations.

Gutted if he left, and clearly differnces whatever they may be between Toby and the club concerning contract need to be overcome.

But as to what those differences are, I'll wait and make an informed response when all is revealed.

I hope Toby stays i also dont think him not going to Italy has anything to do with him wanting to leave and believe it is purely to do with fitness. I'd also rather him stay here and get fitter for the return leg, but the one good thing coming from the Telegraph headline (and i havnt read the article because i gave up reading papers when they stopped printing actual news) is at least its not about Kane going to RM or Poch going to RM or Dele "having that in hes game" and going to RM.

Although Talksport will still manage to give about 2hrs on the subject today.

Just hearsay from the papers imo. Let's see what Poch have to say on the matter later today on the press conference.

I think people are surprised because it's such a big game and he's one of the few in the squad with experience of such big European games. I didn't expect him to start, but find it odd that he's not even in the squad.
