Belgium journo says Poch deemed him not be fit enough to play

So I reckon be will play against rochdale and palace and not the juve return game

I think people are surprised because it's such a big game and he's one of the few in the squad with experience of such big European games. I didn't expect him to start, but find it odd that he's not even in the squad.

But the point is rather then travelling doing warm up etc with the team wont benefit him for the remainder of the season. He is prob on a different training programe for Rochdale

Hamstring injuries in the league this year have been rife. A leading doctor was on Talksport last week I think it was, saying a number of players have clearly been brought back too quickly, leading them to breakdown shortly after.
My opinion is Poch is easing Toby back into it and from Toby's point of view, if he does too much too soon and breaks down again, his WC is then up in the air.

I fear he will sold on in the summer. He's on 50k a week ffs. The summer after he'll have a 25mil clause in his contract so if he's not signing with us we'll cash in this year.

If VVD is 75mill then Toby is at least that. He is older and on less contract. There's another reason we've put so much faith in Sanchez this season. I reckon everyone inside the club know he's off. Pity.

£40 - 50 I would say if he was to go in the summer for a 29yo would be good business, and concentrate on tieing Verts down for another 3-4 years.

It took a long while for JV to commit to the club and his contract situation dragged for a couple of seasons if I remember correctly.

Still have a good feeling Toby will re-commit.

Levy normally gets it right when it comes to our player negotiations and when to sell them (if at all).

However i really hope he works extremely hard to keep Toby. Would be hard to get an adequate replacement, although having Jan and Sanchez (with Dier and Foyth) will help

However, if Toby doesnt sign, we may have to sell him in the next window.

Let's hope this is all rubbish.

Depending on which Belgium Journo it is they have been accurate in the past regarding our players and other, will have more faith in them stating he has been rested rather than the Uk ones.

Graham Roberts has tweeted that he's just getting extra training and sky are just stirring up rubbish.

I know as a legend he'd likely say that anyway but would think its as close to the truth as we are likely go get? Apart from Poch literally saying it...

Thing is that we don’t need a CB option on the bench as if we get an injury to Jan or Sanchez then we have Dier who can drop back to cover.

Our bench for CL is normally:
  • GK cover
  • RB cover
  • LB cover
  • Defensive Midfield option
  • Solid Midfield cover
  • Attacking Midfield option
  • Striker option

It makes more sense if he’s not 100% to stay at home and recover properly as it’s going to be a busy last few months (along with the World Cup)

You make that sound like it's the clubs fault.

It isn't!

Toby is the main reason we have had the best defence the last two seasons, and it is that defence that our two title bids were built on. In the three months he's been out we haven't necessarily struggled at the back, but we've let in more goals than normal. I think he's a key player and that he, along with Kane and Eriksen, should be at the top of Levy's list for a new contract.

I've said this before, all this holiding out for a new contract or a move is costing him a fortune every week as presumably a new contract increase would start immediately.
I guess Toby/the agent know what they are doing and feel he will be better off long term, especially the way wages have taken off compared to if he had re signed last summer but it does leave him underpaid (relatively speaking) currently.

Exactly, he was happy to sign the contract and no doubt it has several clauses in for bonuses etc.

That said, I do think we owe him a significant increase. I know 50k is a lot of money already etc but there's no point comparing footballer wages to that of the man on the street.

He's widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world and when Sissoko is earning nearly double, its a miracle Toby hasnt properly thrown his toys out the pram! I think it'll get sorted as there is no financial sense in not paying him what he wants.

An equivalent defender will cost around £50/60/70m? He doesn't rely on pace so won't drop significantly (you'd hope) as he gets older, and will also be good for the younger guys to learn from.

If we want to be serious about winning the league etc we can't still hope that one of the young lads might develop well enough. Not when we've got a currently world class centre half already

IMO he should be starting but I can see why he wouldn't. Sanchez has been great but he's having a little downturn at the moment (which is fine, he's 21) and if Toby has played a full 90 and been training for 3 weeks now then I think he's going to be as ready as he'll ever be to re-take his position in the 11.
You don't consider a minor setback at all after first game post-injury.

I don't think Poch handled this particularly well. It only came about because he got arsey with a question about why Toby wasn't in the squad for Arsenal -- if he'd just said 'he needs to work on his fitness so he doesn't get injured again from coming back too soon' there would be no story.

He's not really, there's a considerable amount of other factors why we had the best defence in the league 2 years running, Toby was an important part of that but let's not pretend he is ultimately the reason or he holds our defence together, he doesn't

Keeping clean sheets against Utd and Arsenal is telling you something.
