You make that sound like it's the clubs fault.

It isn't!

Well i certainly didn't mean to give that impression. You jumped to that conclusion yourself. For the record it's definitely not the club's fault, they've already offered him more. They've been fantastic in tying players down to contracts.

That does not mean we're in a good position now with this one though and i was only posting about where we stand right now.

We’ve pretty much got to where we are because of our fantastic moneyball strategy. Although people derided the use of the Bale money. We still got Eriksen now probably £100m and Lamela £25-30m from it plus the recycled money chadli Paulinho etc. So we ended well up on it. Essentially employed it again with Walker by getting a younger player and profit. Although not a roaring success ,Aurier has held his value but also we got Sanchez 21 from the walker money.Which makes the toby situation interesting. Will we cash in at 29 and hope to get in a younger model of same standard. Therefore refreshing the squad for say another 5/6 years without letting the value just die. Although a risky strategy in some ways it’s the only way we can compete. We can’t just let the value on some players die. This obviously doesn’t apply to every player Kane Eriksen vertonghen etc. But I think to keep the squad young and refreshed going forward we may have to identify the odd player as replaceable with a younger model.

But Poch actually created the story by reacting in the press conference. He could've shut it down in one second by saying you need to be careful with hamstring injuries.

It doesn't matter how he reacted though because the story would have come out, the media were pushing the Alderweireld out of the NLD agenda hence why the journo asked the question.

But clearly reacting angrily makes it into a story. On Sunday Supplement they all said had he just said it was because of the injury none of the journalists would've thought twice about it, and it was only Poch's tetchy response that made them think there was more to it.

He will be 29, come on 75M you are having a laugh, yes the markets crazy, but its not that crazy. Sanchez was swapped for Mkhitaryan. Aubameyang went for just over £50M. He could have a change of heart but in my reading of the situation is its all about a release clause, if that's true it doesn't matter if he signs a contract or not, the fact is he still wants a move to a bigger club.
Just to ask you a question (and not trying to start an argument :) )

Do you think if Toby left, he is worth more than Stones and Van Dyke and maybe even Walker?

I personally think he certainly is.

You mention attacking players but inho very good defenders are worth a fortune as they are so far and few between.

However hopefully it doesn't matter and he stays.

on that if Alderweireld goes this summer or next I can see us making a move for the young Ajax CB Matthijs de Ligt, but then where does that leave Juan Foyth

Dipper at work to me earlier after hearing Toby isn't flying out to Turin.

"We'll get him in the summer for £50m"

When I asked why the hell would he go to Liverpool, he looked utterly stunned I asked such a question and just said "We'll be finishing second in the league"

If you are correct, it would just be 1 out and 1 in so no real impact on Foyth really. Foyth has to prove himself in the premier league first.

Toby is the main reason we have had the best defence the last two seasons, and it is that defence that our two title bids were built on. In the three months he's been out we haven't necessarily struggled at the back, but we've let in more goals than normal. I think he's a key player and that he, along with Kane and Eriksen, should be at the top of Levy's list for a new contract.
Jan Vertonghen had a better season last year, IMO.

If he doesn’t sign, renew his contract and then run the risk of him leaving next summer for the alleged buyout fee

Worse case scenario is we get another year out of him and then the £25m in Summer 2019. That’s the equivalent of selling him for £50m this summer imo.

Plus it gives us a year to convince him to sign another extension. Look at Ozil. He was gone, then suddenly he extends his contract.

The new stadium, along with this apparent statement of intent, and maybe, just maybe, a trophy, might be the convincing he needs to stay long term!

That's nonsense, journalists will always try and find an angle for a narrative to form a story, they would have reacted the same if he had been blase about it, this is what they do. I don't understand why you'd take what those journo's on the Sunday Supplement say as gospel.

I'd sign him even if Toby stays, his potential is as great as sanchez. Gonna cost someone 80 million in a few years

On that basis every time Pochettino said he didn't select a player because of injury there should be a story about him leaving the club?

If we’re only getting 40 then 15m for another year of Toby is a bargain, would have to sell for at least 50 but in today’s market should go for around 75m, also a years a long time and he could have a change of heart, see Ozil, so if someone wants him now they will have to pay up
This summer we have some control over where he goes. I.e abroad. Next summer we don't. That's worth more than £15m. City with Toby become even more untouchable. United become a hell of a lot more solid. Even Chelsea could come into the equation. I don't want us selling to anyone in the league.

Amazes me really that Toby gets so much more praise from the media than vertonghen. There’s nothing between them imo. So no idea why toby gets so much more hype.

New TV deal announced this week. Maybe the club are waiting till they know exact finances before making him an offer, would make sense.
