On that basis every time Pochettino said he didn't select a player because of injury there should be a story about him leaving the club?

If a player has had previous speculation surrounding him yes hence why they made a meal out of the Rose situation.

If you look at it It's very easy to put a spin on the situation and twist it so suit one's agenda, Toby has a contract situation hanging over his head which is still yet to be signed, he doesn't play in the biggest match of the season so the media put 2 and 2 together to say that there must be a problem.

Just to ask you a question (and not trying to start an argument :) )

Do you think if Toby left, he is worth more than Stones and Van Dyke and maybe even Walker?

I personally think he certainly is.

You mention attacking players but inho very good defenders are worth a fortune as they are so far and few between.

However hopefully it doesn't matter and he stays.

At 29, coming to the end of his contract, no I don't think he is worth more than Stones, Van Dyke or Walker. While the market is bonkers you still have to justify a price tag, what are peak years for a CB... 28-32, with a good injury record. No one will pay £75M to get 2-3 years top service from a player.

Amazes me really that Toby gets so much more praise from the media than vertonghen. There’s nothing between them imo. So no idea why toby gets so much more hype.

Maybe because he's newer to the league and when he came into out side we had the best defense in Europe or something.

Were as vertonghen was here when we werent that solid under AVB and then clownish under Sherwood.

We know that's not the while whole story but that's probably how they see it. I agree vertonghen is every bit as good, better in some areas

One of the toilet clowns on Sunday supplement said sanches was a bit wobbly and more like David Luiz than solid like Toby so there u go, shite Liverpool sponsored media

But clearly reacting angrily makes it into a story. On Sunday Supplement they all said had he just said it was because of the injury none of the journalists would've thought twice about it, and it was only Poch's tetchy response that made them think there was more to it.

You believe that shower of shite?

If it is about money, hopefully it's a case of Toby wanting us to make him an improved offer and not simply because he knows he can get more elsewhere. Even with the new stadium and TV deal I find it extremely unlikely that we will be matching the Manchester clubs for wages any time soon. Whatever we offer him you can probably add about £50k a week to that if he moves to Manchester.

It was posted elsewhere this morning by someone who has had info before

“As for Toby, the story is that his team had been quite hard to work with and eventually everyone including Poch sat down together and asked him what he wanted. He wanted a huge amount, double the highest paid player at the club. Everyone went away and Levy asked Poch what he thought and Poch said we should pay it. Poch used that to his advantage and told Toby that he is going to get him what he wanted. They shook hands and everyone felt very good. So they drew up the contract and gave it to Toby as soon as he got himself fit (last week). His agent turned round and said thank you, but we've changed our mind and we now want this much instead. Poch flipped as you saw. It's not dead but not in a good place right now.”

This smells a little to me, that's not usually how a negotiation works, usually there is a high and a low and a middle ground found, Levy would not offer full amount, nor is Toby worth twice our best paid player otherwise our pay structure is completely out the window, we will at some point have to change our pay structure but Kane is the person to do that for, not Toby.

If this is true, which I have no idea about, I'd have him sold to the highest bidder. I don't think Poch would be involved in transfer talks directly either. He's more coach than manager.

So Toby wanted £200k a week which is double of what Kane earns and he'll be the best paid CB in the world which means that Poch thinks Toby is indispensable yet he hasn't taken him to Turin which happens to be one of our biggest games of the season.

To the contrary, it sounds plausible to me.

Many things sound plausible. Doesn't mean they are true though. He has been out for a long while and we don't want to rush him back- better to make sure he gets up to speed and doesn't injure himself again. That is the most likely explanation. Why the reluctance of some people on here not to accept it and offer more complex explanations, particularly when the starting point for them is websites that simply make things up- HITC, Sportswitness etc.

Is that aimed at me?

It's probably just designed to do him good in the long run.

If he's half cooked then why play him against Juve when we've got 3 other capable centre halves available. If he spends these couple of days working with the fitness coach instead of the tactics and match prep in Turin then that will probably do his fitness the world of good for the rest of the season. People need to understand that the fixtures could well start to pile up again, particularly if we progress against Juve and continue to go through in the cup.

It could be something off the field but I highly doubt it tbh.
