I think aurier is better suited against park the bus sides who have little threat going forward. I feel his pace creates space for others.

I also think he did well in this game despite a really bad spell where he looked certain to get sent off. There is definitely a good player here.

The midfielders were all amazing today.
People say he has pace but i seriously do no see that at all. He cant go pass defenders, and attackers pass him easily, needing the backing of Sanchez to cover him.

Serge Aurier

I knew way before that he is a liability and accident waiting to happen...upgrade on Walker? LOL

Just like i was right on the two N'somethings

Just like I was right on the two lightweights Pritchard & Carroll

Just like you were wrong on 'Fat Chest Danny Rose' and 'Wanyama = Zokora and Palacios'.

By all means, have an opinion, but do it with a bit of respect and support for a player still finding his way in our team.

To be fair, your record at spotting who should go and who shouldn't is pretty decent, but don't claim infallibility when a simple search of the site shows that not to be the case. Give Serge a go. He might just turn out fine.

Anyway, this is the MOTM thread. Eriksen for me.

Lloris - 7: Could have been stronger for the goals, was excellent after. Kept us in it with saves from... that blonde fella.

Aurier - 5: I like him; but he’s taking a while to settle. Has just come back from injury.

Sanchez - 6: Looked fine - good tackle to deny Higuain getting clean through in second half and dealt with everything else.

Vertonghen - 8: That block in the second half was world class. All this hot air about Juve’s back line... Jan would walk in and be given the captaincy.

Davies - 6: Usually reliable. Wouldn’t mind seeing Rose at Wembley.

Dier - 7: Passed the ball faster today. Mostly to other Spurs players.

Dembele - 9: Silly foul at the beginning quickly forgotten about. Privilege to watch at times. Made Khedira and Pjanic look like Wilshere and Xhaka.

Lamela - 8: So good. Works so hard. Means so much to him, too.

Eriksen - 8: Aggressive, which is fantastic to see. Nailed a free kick, too.

Alli - 8: Sublime when he gets going. Thought he’d suffer when Juve crowded him out but he came back again and again and nabbed two assists.

Kane - 7: Quiet in the second half but very good in the first. Took his goal so casually, but could have done more second half.

Subs didn’t have much time, but was pleased to see how bold Lucas was with the ball. Constantly driving forward, not afraid to take his man on.

10 for our fans at the game!
Even at 2-0 they were in full song... must have been on the Morretti?

This is the only negative from an absolutely wonderful game. But I feel really sorry for Tripps actually. He gets a really bad rap, but this month he has been excellent, and he’s getting dropped for the prestige games for... this guy?

I understand the need to rotate, but there is no way that Aurier should be first choice from what we’ve seen so far.
It’s because Aurier has a yard on Trippier and Costa would have two yards on him. Remember Aurier playing left to man mark Salah? Same principle.

Come on guys, love Tripps but there’s an obvious tactical reason why Aurier starts against Costa. Tripps would be awfully exposed unless we went 3 at the back which we probably
Will at Wembley.

Dembele and Eriksen are both excellent. I will give the MOTM to Eriksen due to that goal but it is very close

Hugo - His distribution looks much better recently. Good saves

Aurier - He is the prefect Walker replacement, well, the pre-Poch Walker....

Sanchez - His 2nd half performance was really good

Verts - usual Jan

Davies - Except that foul, he is quite good.

Dier - One pass aside (the usual Diet), he is really solid today

Lamela - Selection justified. Clearly selected because of his defensive contributions. If Lennon was the "defensive winger", then Lamela is a "defensive inverted winger"

Dele - always looks good in big matches?

Kane - uber

Aurier was nowhere near as bad as some of you miserable weirdos are making out.

Trippier deserves first choice atm, but he’d have struggled against Costa’s pace and trickery. Aurier got beat once or twice and gave a pen away. Bernadeschi had 2/3 chances cutting in on Davies’ side and Davies gave a pen - but Aurier is a liability because he’s knew and this forum is full of “yer da”s

Apart from the spelling of ‘new’, I agree with this. Aurier wasn’t as bad as some are making out.

The rash challenge for the penalty aside, I thought he had a decent second half and blocked numerous balls with his head to stop their counters. Always showed for an attack too, though would’ve preferred more (or better) crosses.

But he does need to cut out the rash challenges. If he’d stayed on his feet he may have been able to run the attacker out of play. Rush of blood and all that. Hopefully Poch will coach that out of him as time goes on.

Dembele MOTM obvs. Eriksen just behind, just. What a match the second leg will be. It will take a massive, massive effort to get through, but we can, which is unbelievable considering the first 10 mins. What a game.

I wasn’t surprised by tonight after seeing them against fiorentina the other night. Dybala matuidi cuadrado are big losses for them. Shame about the start or really feel we would have won quite comfortably. Everyone was great bar Aurier and Lloris possibly could have saved both. Dembele resurgence has been quit miraculous.

Our spine is so strong it is hard to pick out a MOTM.
Lloris, Vertonghen, Dembele, Eriksen, Kane.

I'm a little late to this thread but I am shocked that I was the first to vote for Kane.
He was dangerous throughout and scored against a side that just does not concede.
A lot of eyes were on him tonight and he absolutely delivered.

There has always been a question in my mind whether he could score against the best defences in the world especially after the euros and he has answered that now.

Dembele is still on fire - against a very low press this time that maybe flattered him slightly, and someone was holding the defence together well and it certainly wasn't Sanchez, and Eriksen also scored of course, but for me the performance (and the goal) that will be remembered is Kane's.

admittedly I watched large chunks of the game at double speed but Im not getting the Sanchez hate. being paired with Aurier is a bit of a disadvantage and they targeted his side a lot more as you can see from the pass stats.

Fuck me that was a good game of football. Juventus are a seriously proper football team, with some very good footballers, incredibly well drilled tactically, on an incredible run of form, having not lost a game since about 1976, and only conceded one goal in their last 12 seasons.

Once again, we seemed ill prepared for that early blitzkrieg approach. Anyone who's watched Juve knows they like to get an early goal and will happily shell for 70 minutes on a single goal, always threatening on the counter. I'd watched them do similar to Fiorentina and Atlanta recently. And so it panned out, as at Anfield, for the first 10 minutes we were like headlit rabbits with myxomatosis, normally calm defenders are making poor clearances, midfielders making silly challenges, sure footed players bumbling.

Before we'd even had chance to feel our way into a very tough test we find ourselves 0-2 down. A couple of really naive bits of defending, a (offside but..) wonderful finish from Higuain, and a really strange penalty where Davies just didn't seem aware of their guy.

That what then followed was us having plenty of ball was not a huge surprise, it's not just what we wanted, it's what Juve wanted, it's their thing. As I said, Ive seen them do this several times this season in games (lets be honest they've been doing it for about 40 years). They have not having the ball down to a very fine art. What I expected was 80 minutes of huffing and puffing, with us being lucky to blow their garden gate down, let alone the house. What we did next impressed the fucking shit out of me. It wasn't just that we were excellent with the ball, what really made the difference was how fucking superb we were without it. Ive said this a million times, but the high press is the most effective way of beating the bus park, and tonight we pushed the bus over and trampled all over one of the best built garages in European football.

And it was our voracious press that earned our first goal. Eriksen hassles the ball, aided by Alli, they then interchange quickly and Alli plays a great through ball to Kane, who having already spurned a chance wonderfully created by Eriksen's vision, wasn't going to waste another one, skilfully does Buffon and finishes assuredly from a narrow angle.

Selection wise, I'd have still preferred Wanyama to Dier, and Trippier to Aurier, but I have to say one of the key changes Poch made was inspired, and that was to bring Lamela in for Son. This was exactly the type of game that needed Lamela's aggression, his ability to press, win and play the ball in tight spaces. This was not a game for Son's mercurially erratic unpredictability.

From the tenth minute to the 45th Dembele was at his very best, a game like this is where his cage mentality is a real plus, coming in on the press behind the front four, mopping everything up, carrying the ball at the right times and realising at the right times. This wasn't "vintage" Dembele. This was a better Dembele than the old vintage. If we can keep this Dembele for the next 10 games, it'll be worth having Mr fucking Pink bust my balls every Saturday.

On any normal day Dembele's performance would have pissed the MOTM, and his performance undoubtedly had a knock on effect on others, providing a platform for those ahead of him, but his superb performance was eclipsed by another phenomenal performance from the quiet dictator. This was Juve's back yard. But this little fella was bossing this game. I've said elsewhere he's almost created a new tactical remit; a false 8. The type of performances he's putting in are virtually unique in football. He's a 10 who (co) leads the press, who then also gets through nearly as much ball work as Dembele (and Dembele is getting through more than most CM's), then he's playing exquisite through balls, then he's scoring brilliant free kicks, and all the while he's constantly orchestrating everything. I just think if he looked like (or had the presence) Totti or Zidane the world would be raving about him, but he just dies everything so quietly.

The second half was a slightly less coordinated affair for the first 15 minutes or so, and never quite reached the total control heights of the first half, but we were still the side playing most of the football. Our two main protagonists of the first half started inauspiciously, Dembele was not quite as involved as he had been, and Eriksen was less sure footed. Juve tried to be a little more aggressive, a little higher with a modicum of success, and they did have their moments, but we just kept playing, pressing pretty well, Dembele and Eriksen once again took the reigns and eventually we got our just rewards through a really clever free kick from Eriksen.

I'm really pissed that I didn't get myself out there for this one, because that equaliser was one of those moments that you just know would have been orgasmic to be there for.

Away to one of Europe's royalty, a team who have featured in two of the last three CL finals, this was a performance of the highest calibre. Not just because we had all the possession, but because of what we did with it, it wasn't all perspiration, it was inspiration too. Eriksen and Dembele led the way, but most played their part. Lamela and Alli definitely deserve best supporting actor awards, and Vertonghen redeemed his first minute error with an amazing interception second half.

Individual

Lloris - I thought he was caught a bit flat footed for the first and not brilliant on the pen, having gone the right way it looked saveable, but he did have the second pen covered and made an outstanding save from bernadeschi second half.

Aurier - Not great in either direction really. The penalty he gave away was really, really piss poor.

Sanchez - A couple of iffy moments but generally very good.

Vertonghen - Poor clearance in the build up to their first goal, after that pretty superb.

Davies - A pretty rudimentary error for the pen, after that was pretty decent.

Dier - His passing does let him down at times, and not just the long-isn ones he tries, but when pressed his passing becomes rushed, he'll fire balls into the first person he sees, regardless of whether they have a man up their arse, but he worked hard and provided some insurance for Dembele to maraud forwards.

Dembele - OK*

Lamela - Just what this game needed from one of it's support acts, pressed well, was able to take part in those intricate little exchanges we kept running round flailing Juve players. Really good game.

Alli - Like Lamela, worked hard, pressed well, helped us dominate and came up with two pivotal contributions. Very good game.

Eriksen - Maestro. MOTM

Kane - Kane. Hustle, bustle, press, score. Uber.

Let's not use Aurier as a scapegoat for every fucking thing.

Sanchez has made mistakes in the past with Trippier as a RB. In fact previous to Aurier's pen, Sanchez is the one who was marking Douglas Costa. He nutmegs him and Aurier comes from behind to cover him. He also made a bad pass in the second half with his head that could've costs us.
He had a good overall game though. But his mistakes are not Aurier's fault

Thing I love about Lamela is that he might not always play well but you can guarantee he will never go missing, shy away from challenges or amble about the pitch nonchalantly.

Lamela and Kane were particularly aggressive and switched on from the start. But as you say lamela controlled the ball very well under pressure when he won it or received it. At one point I thought he was going to go over the top and Get a booking or two :). Good selection from poch and lamela paid him back for it.
