Regardless of who starts it is a big call for Pohettino. Son has been immense for us recently and that was a massive statement starting Lamela literally unreal to have a fit and hungry Lamela back. He has to choose between Eriksen, Dele Lamela, Son and Lucas to start 3 positions. Great to have but no one is guaranteed to start something we have cried out for, for years.

Well hopefully like last night this is the start of Poch tailoring our attacking line up depending on the opposition and/or form.

I’ve been critical of his team selections in the past but he was spot on last night.

As good as Son is he does have a habit of coughing up posession too easily away from home and Lamela obviously has experience of playing in Italy and is adept at playing between the lines and keeping hold of the ball in tight situations.

He was excellent last night, with and without the ball.

What I love about where we are at now, is that I can honestly see a front 4 from Lamela, Eriksen, Son, Dele, Lucas as having enough guile and rotation to play rotating false 9's, in Kane's absence, if Llorente is in his stupor all season (making the leap that Lucas will transition easily as I get the feeling he will).

He is certainly not leaving cheaply, Coco, if he were to want to go back to Italy I think we should say only at £50M as he is that level IMO, certainly to replace with aspiration of equal (or better) qualities.

I think Steven Gerrard and Glenn Hoddle deciphered it during the post match analysis. He was saying "Leave it for me" and pointing at the ball...which brilliantly led the experienced master Buffon to expect it to be whipped to his left...but that imperative one second was lost when Eriksen then hit hard and low to Buffon's right.

He knew exactly what he was doing.

Should we ever meet Argentina again in a World Cup.... Lamela is going to be the guy who dives in the box in an Argentina vs England World Cup quarter final. He's gonna be the guy that kicks out at an England player, for which he should've been sent off, and then goes on to score the winner in injury time. He's gonna be the guy who winds up England players getting in their faces, even after Argentina are coasting and when it seems so needless and unnecessary. He's gonna be the guy that will be villified by the English press and fans alike for some of his actions. He will not care either.

Many great teams have a player with mental attributes like that, in which the only thing they will care about is winning at all costs...and we ladies and gentlemen...to borrow a phrase... have got one of our own.

When you look back at some of the complete and utter water carriers we've had over the years...it's an absolute breath of fresh air.

Well Lamela’s already being villified by the bin dippers and woolwich....

Love Lamela. Forever and always. Give him that new contract.

I know there’s still a lot of games between now and the end of the season but if the club are looking at Lamela and thinking about selling in the summer but using the rest of the season as an opportunity for him to prove himself then that game last night should be all they need.

If he wants to stay then we should sign him up for another 5 years.

I think that sounds better as a story, than real life. If Lamela took the kick, it was more likely to go exactly where it went - to Buffon's right. That is the natural angle for a left-footed kick. It would have been difficult for Lamela to get a shot off, over the wall, to Buffon's left.

The trickery was in Eriksen going near post, instead of far post - which would have been more natural for a right footed kicker.

Ultimately Buffon was fooled - poor wall set-up which covered the far post, and Buffon cheated to the far post on his first step despite the wall protection, only for Eriksen to go near post.

It's just people like @Francis Gibbs, @zoneD, @piedpiper and some other person that I can't remember that refuse to ever give Lamela credit. Edit - ah yeah, how could I forget the awfully named @dontsalebale

Everything he does is tinged by the fact he isn't Bale. They expected him to be cutting in and smashing it top corner, but because he rarely does that, they despise him.

They truly don't have the foggiest about football and should stick to hurling drunken abuse at their TV during darts.

Our fans that don't rate Lamela and are unable to ever praise him instantly show themselves up as muppets.

Come now behave... You'd swear its the second coming of Christ...

Okay on a more serious note. I dont have anything against him. Ive popped in on this thread over the last few days and the love in is crazy. I dont see it. I really dont but what i will say is I've read the comments and praise and looked for it in his game..... I've seen some of it in his play.

I think he has a MASSIVE fanbase on here and even rationale critique wont be taken kindly.

Im happy as he adds to our options and im less frustrated with him than in previous seasons.

Btw don't make it personal with the abuse..... Takes away from a otherwise well constructed argument. Also allow others to have a differing view. (y)

I'd be very surprised if he doesn't get a new contract and stay beyond the summer. Poch clearly loves him. Fact he started a huge game last night shows he's a big part of squad and also he performed really well.

Not in a Sissoko way but him and Lucas hopefully now allow us to keep the likes of Dele and Son fresh and on the ball. Eriksen always starts for me but there is now option to rest him if needed in an 'easier' home game. I'd feel relatively good with a Son Dele Kane Lamela front 4 in the odd 'easy' home game.

With the Lucas signing there isn't that much needed in the summer. We have deadwood in Llorente, Sissoko, GKN and Janssen to rid that can be replaced with one guy. I'd be perfectly fine going into new stadium with in terms of attacking players Eriksen, Dele, Lamela, Son, Lucas, Kane and one new quality signing.

I remember that 5-1 away defeat to newcastle. And I think Lamela was the only spurs player that wants to fight for something on that day (and scored a good goal). Other players simply gave up. His mentality is brilliant.

Although I hate his right foot.

He did the same when first Wanyama then Kane scored against Liverpool - was jumping around like a maniac.

Also the first game of last season when Erik equalised against everton, the intensity in his face when celebrating was ridiculous.

I can't quite get my head around his comeback.

It's quite something considering.

So good to see him back in the team. His energy and fight has been missed. Really helps with the high press. Wish he has half a right foot to go with his left but you can’t have everything. Get him signed up to a new deal.

Hell will freeze over before some people will ever give him credit. He has had vile abuse that he never deserved. I don't forget, nor do I forgive. I'm just keeping my powder dry.
