Well you missed some moments in the match then. A couple times he split the defense with short runs with the ball as well as made some nice passes forward. The other thing he did, and always does, is offer pressure relief in that players can play him the ball when the team is under pressure knowing that his pass will be somewhere (backwards, sideways, forward) that relieves pressure. Thought it was a good first game back after being out with injury.

I'm not saying it wasn't a good first game back, I'm saying he is capable of more. Toby was playing his first game in however long, he was still biting into challenges and pinging the ball around. Regarding the bold, I agree he does that well - but yesterday almost every pass was just the way he was facing. If we're playing with Wanyama and Winks - we need Winks to be more adventurous, imo. As I said in my subsequent post, I do understand why he played as he did and I love the guy, but I'm not going to pretend it was a performance to get excited about. (Conversely, it's true that it's more about the minutes and rhythm)

Some of you lot get far too defensive, when people aren't even harshly criticising.

As far as the emboldened, I am excited about him as he is now back and fit enough to play regularly (assuming no response to last night) and can only help in our push for 2 trophies and top 4 place.

Interesting to see what happens here. Apparently he liked a tweet asking why he wasn’t on the bench. Must be hugely frustrating after that amazing 6 weeks he had. Looked almost certain for a World Cup spot now can’t even get on the bench. I think it’s fair to say that Poch has a liking for big physical players. So I wonder if he wants a like for like dembele replacement in summer and where that leaves winks because they are very different players.

Winks and Toby have just come back from injury. I would rather have him on the bench than Sissoko but, Wanyama was always going to be the first sub in the center. Expect we will see Winks competing in FA Cup and probably in PL against teams in the lower half. He should get his chance to prove himself.

By the way, we now have 21 fit outfield players I think, so good players are going to be left out of a match day squad and in some cases may be starting the next match. Don't read too much into every decision because, if you do, you will be writing different players off the team every week.

Yup 5 outfield players will be out of every squad. But was just a reference to World Cup and the longer outlook.

I love Winks and think he has the ability and technique to really help our midfield out. That being said with the squad coming back to full fitness it is up to him to win his spot back and to usurp those in front of him.

I for one believe possession is a better defensive tool than muscle so I would have him ahead of Dier for most games, but that is just me. Clearly Poch sees something different, but for me Dier has been lucky the past couple of games to not be squeezed upon by a pressing team and thus looks the part. Against Liverpool he was at a loss until he moved back to CB. This is why I see Winks as the better option against such teams. He has close control, can handle the press at his back and pivot away and he has quick one touch football.

Will be interested in what happens with the kid because I fully believe in him and think that a pairing of Winks and Wanyama is a classy pairing.

While i tend to agree, it is touch and go between the 2.

And most sane managers would lean to the french international.

Not saying that i agree with that.
If I was picking out of the two I’d ask 1 question who would effect the game the most and the logical answer is Winks.

I’m wondering though atm is the injury lay off a easy out for poch to use.

We will see who Poch prefers out of Sissoko and Winks very soon imo.

Hasn’t looked himself after the last injury setback

If he gets back to the form he previously showed he gets onto the bench easily. Poch loves him and so do I but at his best not the Winks lite we’ve seen of late

Hope he regains his fitness and form and gets back into the starting XI

I hate to see him, one of our own, being left out of the squad for Moussa fuckin Sissoko...
You wouldn't have balls to say that to Poch. Sissoko hasnt been injured, and hes a different kind of player anyway. Poch knows what he's doing, no matter if Toby and Winks are left out.

If fit and in form Winks has to be in the squad. Sissoko I don't really get except as a physical presence option until Wanyama is fully fit. Winks does give us something different and if he is on the bench with Wanyama/Dier as well as two of Son/Lamela/Lucas we have real quality to change games

Said this in a Dembele thread, but is Winks the long term replacement for Dembele?

Not for me they are different players. For me winks is a ball playing DM like a carrick or a xabi alonso. So then it basically comes down to do you want the muscle of wanyama/Dier or the the more creative option of winks. For me winks/Dier Just doesn’t work it’s to negative. You need that Dembele type that can break the lines and Just boss the game. Winks is more that deep lying player that will pull the strings.

Hope the lads gets a start on Sunday, (as well as many other fringe players), needs more game time to get back to his best
