That's the thing, £25m for a 30 year old centre back who has given us four years service and generally been excellent, having only signed for £12m, is not that bad at all.

Toby is a great centre back, but he has also never been quite as great since his first big injury, and this is the second successive season where he missed a considerable chunk of games through injuries. If we get one more year out of him and he then leaves for £25m at the age of 30, with Sanchez having had 2 seasons of Premier league experience/ Pochettino coaching and Foyth even further along, it won't be a disaster at all. I'd actually rather lose him for £25m because of this supposed clause in the summer of 2019 than for £50m this coming summer, but I doubt Levy will see it that way.

I'm fine with that but it's WHO he can go to is the problem.

I think it will depend more on what Poch wants. I reckon Levy will back him in any event. Poch won't want to keep Toby if he doesn't commit himself or makes it clear that he wants to leave. So the chances of the club ever activating the extra year on the contract are non-existent.

I honestly think we might have lost him when we prioritised Dier's ambition over his. Can't remember exactly how it went but I remember thinking 'Toby's going to feel disrespected now' and 'why are we carrying on like Dier is potentially world class when Toby already is!'

Toby going for £50m or so only hurts us if he goes to an English competitor.

That would just be silly, and very distressing.

Let him go abroad for a big fee and we could all end up winners.

Chelsea example is solidifying my point, they could have got Barkley for £35m but they waited until Jan to get him £20m cheaper.

Ha ha - totally the opposite. The player rejected them in the summer even though they were desperate to pay £35 for a player they could have got not nothing in 10 months time. 4 months later they then paid £25M for a player (still recovering from a very serious injury with no proof he'd regained pre-injury levels of fitness and form) that they could have got for nothing in 6 months time.

Keep going - your making my case for me ;)

At this stage, I'd be very surprised (and obviously very pleased) if TA signs a new contract, but I don't think it will happen.

Chelsea had a £35 M fee agreed on summer deadline day, then the medical showed he wouldn't be fit until January so Chelsea pulled the plug knowing they would save £ 20 M and get him when he was fit again in January. They paid £ 15 M for him, not £ 25 M.

It's Everton that were fucked over for £ 20 M.

That's not actually true, Chelsea sent him back to Everton to get fitter, his price went down and they subsequently got him for £20m cheaper promising him higher wages and huge bonus for his agent, his agent made £7m out of it, trust me - i know what happened first hand.

Did Chelsea save much by waiting?

People need to realise that signing a new contract with the club atm would be stupid for any of our established players. Their are too many variables that are left to be formalized, the stadium, Champions league qualification ect. Once these things start falling into place, with even a trophy to boot if we are lucky, then we'll see new contracts being signed imo.

i think he will sign if we win FA cup (or even CL, a dream though)

Dont think that matters,Think he probably wants that crazy contract since it will be his last big one

This is dragging on alittle too long now, I do wonder if this is why Sanchez and Foyth are with us.

Sanchez and Foyth are with us because we're an extremely proactive club which plans ahead (unlike our neighbours).
Even if Alderweireld (and Vertonghen) had a 5, 6 or 7 year contract, we'd still have signed both Sanchez & Foyth.

Would be nice if the club made a statement about his contract, but that would be to simple, DL never worries about what we think, A brilliant chairman, but not a very good PR person..

Oh, was that net of the higher wages and agents fee? Sorry. I thought you just meant they saved £20m on the transfer fee.

Yeah the transfer fee was £35m and they got him for £15m, I wouldn't know how much they saved on the agents fee and the player wage.

Why would they ever do that? That's not PR that's just downright stupidity. No PR company on the planet would sign off on that degree of transparency.
