Will be absolute madness on matchday let’s be honest. An extra 25k I really can’t imagine it. Will be like those busy days on Oxford st when you literally can’t walk on the pavement cause it’s so rammed.

That would not have got planning consent, nor would it get fire brigade and police approval before we open. Indeed, one of the main points of debate when the revised design was submitted for approval was the removal of three historic buildings, because the pavement was too narrow (2m). There were thick reports submitted to demonstrate how the crowds can be got in and out of the neighbourhood safely - heaving, Carnival-style throngs would not be acceptable.

Trouble with you youngsters.... we had crowds in the 60000s regularly back in the 50s and 60s.
Good point was not as much traffic, more buses though, so there's lots of people to walk to the games. SO more people walking the roads before and after.

People were thinner in those days though

And I imagine one of the factors in capping the stadium at 62,000.

Yeah I remember as a kid late 70s early 80s the high road almost became pedestrian

The theory is all well and good. But I still expect matchdays to be “lively” lol. Tbh as long as it’s not impeding walking freely it will only add to atmosphere. Surrounding area will be heaving, fantastic for local businesses. Actually watched a YouTube thing on West Ham done by that new action group . Was actually really good, showed how all the local outlets round Upton Park are dying one by one . Almost felt bit sorry for them, however much take piss out of West Ham supporters they are probably closest to us as a group more so than Chelsea or Arsenal more authentic and down to earth. Anyways we really are very lucky to be able to have kept our home at WHL.

Was there ever talk or did they try to buy these properties? Would make a big difference to have that area as like a forecourt for approach to stadium. I guess they probably listed by looks of buildings ?

And we didn't need tickets then, just walk up so there were even more people around sometimes.

Locally listed, I think. They're part of the local conservation area and I believe Haringey made their retention a proviso of the wider development - some historic buildings got demolished, other than the stadium!

I'm curious how people on the edges of the south stand will be able to see all the pitch. It seems like the upper level of the west/east stand and the walls between them and the south stand would get in the way, but it may just be me no getting the lines right without the seats etc. in place. The welcome video on the dedicated website makes it look seamless, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it works.

Looking back to September, when work hadn't even begun on the south stand, really stresses how far and how quickly work has progressed.

It’s a shame those buildings couldn’t have been demolished would have made for a much bigger forecourt. On the other hand it gives it more character. Must be the biggest stadium built in such an inner city urban surround.cant think of another in Europe. Most are in spacious areas.

When you see the design of the south stand and how it interacts with the easy and West, you can see that the sight lines aren't compromised.
