Best thing about Dier is his positioning, and leading others’ positioning. He takes up space and blocks channels, extinguishing opposition opportunities before they can start. Also incredibly orchestrative, verbally and with physical gesturing, getting other defensive players positioned moving up or back down the pitch to gain or cover ground.

Often see him just sitting back telling others where to pass or where to form a defensive line.

That’s where he trumps Wanyama, who is more actively defensive.

Eric is underrated. End of.

That's nothing he can't do at CB for me.

When he plays in midfield he looks like a CB playing out of position, because that's exactly what he is. He is not dynamic enough and doesn't make up for that in technical ability.

At a stretch he can be an anchor man in a 3 man midfield, but to play any other role than that in midfield you need to be dynamic and he just isn't in my view.

This is strictly my opinion, but a coach on the pitch is great and very welcome, but when that coach isn’t as dynamic of a player than the player behind him, then I am left scratching my head.

Because dynamism is the only player trait worth considering.

How about Wanyama and Dier are both good options as DMs.

How about Dier is that versatile player most great squads seem to have.

You might get away with playing one top side with a weak link in midfield and still winning with a good performance, but four massive games like we've had recently?

Nah not having that.

Exactly, he’s not getting the credit he deserves.

You can bet your life he’s doing 100% of what Poch asks of him and doing it to the letter.

To be fair, if anything i'm blaming Pochettino for continuing to select him out of position. When selected i'm sure he does the best he can but we are never going to see the best of him unless we play to his strengths.

But what else does he have in midfield to make up for that? This is the point. His passing is very suspect and he doesn't show for the ball often enough especially in times when we are under pressure. He can't carry the ball forward anywhere near as well as Wanyama, Winks, Dembele or even Sissoko.

Pirlo wasn't dynamic, but he had a superb passing range and technical qualities.

For me Dier's best attribute is reading and covering balls behind the defensive line. He can't do that in midfield.

Poch likes Dier because he's versatile and drops back in a 3CB system when we attack, in my mind Wanyama is better than him but there's clearly a reason he prefers Dier at the moment - can't argue with it as we're playing really well so why change it?

His passing is absolutely not suspect. Generally he's good to very good in this regard. His medium to long distance passing is more accurate and all round better than Wanyama's. It's his decision making that can occasionally go awry, which is the cause of his occassional turnovers, albeit not as often as so many claim.

This showing for the ball stuff is strange and I see it a lot from the likes of BC. That's not really his primary responsibility to do it in midfield. it's to be positionally and defensive disciplined, in which he is outstanding, as well as offer an outlet by either dropping between the CB's or to the right hand side to make a back 3 while we'e in possession. Better in this area than Wanyama imo, who is a better presser and more mobile.

Too often you guys judge what he's doing against the critieria that youve set for a player in that position, not what Pochettino is looking for. Do you really think that if he didn't fill what Pochettino was looking for there he would be playing, especially with Wanyama now available?

We change it because it's only a matter of time before Dier makes another wayward pass and unlike against Liverpool we lose the match the because of it.

We change it because our uptick in form has very little to do with Eric Dier. It has everything to do with Moose getting healthy and rediscovering his own form.

We've played fantastic football recently. I don't think anybody can argue that. But have we played fantastic defense? I think not. We can play better defense and everybody on this board has seen us do so.

I guess my criticism should be aimed at Poch then. I think that midfielders have to be technically sound and composed under pressure and when played in a 2 must be able to get about the pitch well to be able to both press themselves and deal with opposition pressing effectively.

The skillsets Dier has are far more suited to centre back if you ask me.

I posted a breakdown tactical video in one of the recent match threads which show how and why he's been so important and the kind of baLance he gives us, I'll see if I can find it but it goes some way to show you why he's so important.

Not sure if it's as simple as that, whilst you're right to be concerned about the negatives I think you're not seeing the positives. We've seemingly found a balance to the team both offensively and defensively and at the moment it looks like Dier is essential to the way we setup, you can't really blame Poch for sticking with him in midfield especially as we're playing well AND dominating games.

As I said I prefer Wanyama but I think it's slightly disingenuous to downplay Dier's contribution to the side at the moment.

To be fair he hasn't been terrible recently.

In midfield I always think he plays a lot more really poor games than really good ones. I can't remember the last time I thought Dier played great there. He has been OK over the last few but not fantastic.

He's had that one bad moment against Liverpool, and then a couple of bad decisions in the second half against Juve in the last few weeks and that's about it. Aside from that he has been very good in this run of tough games. he's definitely been better than Davinson Sanchez over the last few weeks and, if you remove shiny new toy bias, I personally think Dier has had the better season.

It sounds a bit silly, but I don't think he's ever going to be someone you think of as being 'great.' He doesn't really catch the eye with the way he plays. He's like extras in a television show or movie. You don't really exclaim over them, but without them the scene wouldn't work. They're part of what provides the foundation for the stars to strut their stuff. It's also why I think his few mistakes get jumped on, because what he does well doesn't stick in the mind, but a mistake definitely does, like an extra tripping over and faceplanting when they weren't supposed to in the middle of a crucial scene.

Meh, we seemed to cope absolutely fine if not better with him at CB and Wanyama and Dembele in midfield last season.

I like him at CB and i'd probably agree that he is marginally ahead of Sanchez there.

A few papers have us supposedly raiding Watford for Richarlison and Decoure for a combined fee of £50 million.

Just sayin.

Would rather Sessegnon and Maddison personally. Although I'm sure they woulf cost a fair bit more

Yep I'd pretty much agree with that. I do like the look of Decoure however, think he's took to the prem reasonably well and is starting to put in a few solid performances.

I thought Maddison had a good second half today, but I'm not sure how deep he could play, is he not best suited playing a role in AM.

Decoure certainly plays from deeper, driving the team forward.
