What's new

I have never been so embarrassed to be a Spurs fan..

I agree it's completely disgusting. Someone needs to write a family friendly PG rated version of the song, so that Spurs fans of all ages can join in.

I'm thinking something along the lines of this:

Why though?
I understand where you're coming from but he doesn't give a shit. If he cared about what Spurs fans thought of him then he wouldn't have made that move in the first place.

He left to pursue trophies, no matter the cost, which means that the only thing he cares about is his legacy and being remembered. If we focus on the current team and forget him, that will hurt him far more than any chant we can possibly come up with because he'll no longer be relevant, he'll be forgotten.

I don't really care if the chant continues or not, to be honest. I'd rather not have to listen to it and be reminded of him but if the majority want to continue then so be it. That said, I feel quite sure that it's existence alone is proof that we care more about it and him than he ever did or ever will about us. I'd rather not give him the satisfaction of knowing that.

Sol Campbell is a selfish, loathsome, deluded egomaniac. It is clear that beyond football he isn't the sort of guy most of us would want to hang around with, irrespective of his footballing choices. But the fact is the guy isn't Pol Pot. Leaving one club to join another is not a crime. When fans take the game so seriously that they wish death on someone or otherwise make homophobic chants wishing AIDS on that person, then they have lost all sense of perspective and sunk into the gutter.

I don't need to sink into the gutter to dislike the way another behaves. Doing so would only make me a hypocrite.

I don't want Sol to get AIDs, I don't want to be gifted a toy Arsenal fan so I can kick his head in, I'm pretty sure Liverpool fans with their recent Salah chants don't actually want to convert to Islam. These chants may be objectionable but they're not meant literally by 99% of the people singing them.

There are many more important causes in this world to be concerned about than Sol Campbell songs. I do not care if he is offended by them. He is a highly unpleasant individual in both his football life and in his life outside. What he did seriously hampered the development of Spurs and created the situation that led to the songs. However, as a club we have now moved on and we should forget the songs and let him rot in obscurity. What he craves is publicity and we should not let him have it.

What he actually more likely craves is not to have him or his career defined by his ****y treachery. THAT is what we shouldn't let him have. The day we stop giving it to him (within the boundaries of decency of course) is the day he becomes Sol Campbell, ex-Arsenal and England footballer and not Sol Campbell, current and forever ****.

Fair point. I personally will never forgive him and what he did should never be forgotten.

Let's be realistic here, Campbell's career isn't defined by treachery in the eyes of anyone other than Spurs fans. He was a key part of one of the best teams in Premier League history and has a large number of medals to show for it, as well as 70-odd England caps. Outside of our fan base, his defection is nothing other than a humorous footnote to his career, an opportunity to take the piss out of us.

Totally agree with you, I will never forget or forgive either but to use the phrase "The day we stop giving it to him"...giving him what exactly ?? singing insulting songs with him nowhere in sight or earshot...how is that in any way hurting the guy...?? It is pandering to his ego when his name (in no matter what context) is still echoed around the ground. The day we stop singing about him is the day he disappears where he belongs..into the past....not forgotten but not 'immortalised' in song either. I am not advocating that we forget what happened just that we stop this behaviour and move on. I've far better things to think about supporting this wonderful club, like the new ground and our exciting team rather than continually dredging up what that arsehole did. Time to move on and look to the future in which he (and any songs about him) should have no part.

I have given that **** Campbell far too much time and attention on this thread, my opinion on the matter is known....end of.

To be honest as long as it's not obviously racist/homophobic shit and not criticism of our own players then I couldn't care less. It must be hard work finding so many things offensive. The only person it should be offending is Campbell and who cares what he thinks?

Wishing him dead is probably too far but I doubt 99% of the people singing that song actually want him dead, obviously there's a few genuine nutters but what can you do? You can't choose to take that song literally just to make a point.

It’s a full time job for the social media generation, they have made an entire political movement from It.

I think we should keep singing it until he answers :)

Honestly though I would be quite happy to drop all songs about other teams/players, they don't matter to me and would be nice to have another way of showing we have more class than others. As much as I used to enjoy giving abuse to people like Robbie Savage etc think we are much better served singing/supporting our players and perhaps it will result in more loyalty!
