Tottenham target £50m move for Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha

Tottenham Hotspur are planning a fresh move for Wilfried Zaha and are confident of beating Chelsea to his signature this summer.

The north London club failed with their efforts to sign the winger twice last season but are hopeful that Crystal Palace will sell him, even if they avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Signing the 25-year-old would be seen as a statement of intent from Tottenham that the cost of the club’s new stadium — which could be £750 million and is scheduled to open next season — will not affect their spending in the transfer market.

Chelsea want to add attacking players and Manchester City also made a tentative inquiry for Zaha last month.

Last season was Zaha’s best campaign since he returned to the south London club from Manchester United in 2014, scoring seven league goals as Palace avoided relegation. He signed a five-year deal worth around £100,000 per week in May. Spurs made offers of up to £21 million in the summer of 2016 when Steve Parish, the Crystal Palace chairman, called a bid of £12 million “ridiculous”. He could cost more than £50 million.

Zaha hopes to return from a knee problem in one month after being injured in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle United two weeks ago. He missed two months at the start of the season as Palace have struggled for goals. Luka Milivojevic is their top scorer, with seven, but six have been penalties. Christian Benteke, their frontline striker, has scored two league goals.
I like Zaha, but if we have £50m we should be putting the bulk of it towards Sessegnon, not him.

Zaha affects games, but Sessegnon wins them.

I reckon that ship has sailed into the sunset.

I’m pretty sure any Palace fan would disagree with you.

Still want Sessegnon - but to replace Rose.

It's all about end product. Zaha's has got a lot better in the last 12 months, but he's still hit or miss around the box. Sessegnon just looks like a killer. He just has that instinct where to hurt teams, scoring-wise.

Re Zaha or Sess?

Zaha has played in the premier league for years and not really dominated. How old is he?

Sess is 17/18 and dominating championship. Can he step up to Premier League?

I personally would take Sess over Zaha.

You could counter that by saying:

  1. Goal scoring isn’t exactly a problem for us but breaking teams down sometimes is. Zaha could help us by causing havoc for defenders, but it’s not like we don’t have players who can put the ball into the back of the net. Sessegnon’s goal scoring record is excellent but does he completely fuck teams up regularly? I honestly don’t know the answer.
  2. Based on reports over the last 427 years we’ve been linked with Sess, we see him as a replacement for Rose. If we primarily revert back to the 4-2-3-1, as is happening now, Sessegnon’s unlikely to get into those positions to score that number of goals from LB in the PL, meaning that the argument referring to his goadlcong ability is redundant.
I’m partly playing devil’s advocate here, and I 100% really want Sessegnon, but as a Rose replacement. So essentially I want both. Although now we have Lucas and his pace, I think I’d prefer Malcom over Zaha because he seems more intelligent.

So Sess and Malcolm (with Rose possibly leaving)?

I don't like to potshot current players i.e. Rose (maybe besides Sissoko), but that may be the best outcome for us.

He's creating chances for Benteke... Townsend... Connor Wickham?!

His end product is bound to be low, put him with better players (again) and he'll flourish.

I would pick the Fulham kid over him for different reasons but Zaha can still improve a lot more IMO.

I would say we could get both Zaha and Sess.

However it may be Sess and whomever we prefer from Malcolm and Zaha.

No chance of or need to sign Zaha now. We’ve got Moura, Son and Herc said we’ve in principal agree terms with Bordeaux and Malcom. Zaha would cost what? £50m and fits in where? nowhere given our current options and expected options if and when we sign Malcom.

I agree on the whole, he is a creative outlet in a poor team who don't play with enormous possession - always going to be difficult to get great stats in that environment.

I'm still not sure (even in the current market) that £50m represents good value for him though. Maybe i'm still bewildered by the money flying around.

I thought we already had our winger in Lucas?

Think the ship has sailed on this one personally.

We aren't going for Zaha, he's the same age as Moura, twice the price and half the talent.

That is good news about Malcom, if true.

Sess is next.

I agree that we don't need him because we now have a flexible winger in Moura.

No point debating his price because his skillset alone will attract a premium. Buying teams should be grateful that he isn't playing with better players because his fee would be north of £50m (like Ousmane Dembele).
