There is a clear lack of quality in the Chelsea v Barcelona match. The likes of Paulinho, Rakatic, an over the hill Iniesta, Victor Moses, Rüdiger, Christiansen and Fabregas wouldn’t get in our first XI.

Victor Moses in particular is not top 6 quality.

lol if we had Iniesta we'd make damn sure we'd have a position for him in our team.

The early red card obviously helped Bayern tonight, but Besiktas getting whooped adds some context to Liverpool’s (still impressive) result in Porto last week. Besiktas topped Porto’s group and also won in Portugal. *Much* tougher foes await Liverpool.

Having said that, as I’ve said elsewhere the English teams have nobody to fear in Europe this year but one another. This ain’t a vintage Barca team, and yet they’re possibly as good as the continent has to offer.

PL has two teams going through, one (us) that is a toss up, one (Chelsea) that has its work cut out for them and ManU who I expect will have a tough time. Let's not anoint the PL quite yet although we have a fair chance of 3 or 4 teams in quarters.

I do think the money shift towards the PL is going to mean that the league is deeper top to bottom and better across the top 6 or so teams than any other league. This is also going to push English youth prospects to other leagues as the PL buys proven starts and the other leagues are looking for bargains. For me, that is a drawback to the added cash in the PL as I enjoy watching the youth come up and make an impact.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Chelsea go through. They will keep it tight at the Nou camp, maybe go to penalties where anything could happen. I'll feel more comfortable if they out of it. I'd rather we play Barcelona next than Chelsea. Chelsea know how to play against us, where as with Barca they are likely to underestimate us.

Think the last 8 will be more competitive than we've had for a while. Can see a potential CL winner coming from any of the victors of the current last 16 match ups, apart from the Roma v Shakhtar tie. Some teams will be favored more than others, but those others, including us, have more than a fighting chance.

I never ceased to be amazed by some of the reduculous statements on football forums!

Sure, but I'm permitted to have an opinion, right? I can name 20 players off the top of my head who've excited me more than Messi over the years. And while I'm on it, I might as well say I find some Messi fans to be a little cultish.

Of course you're permitted to have an opinion. I just don't see how you can list 20 players more exciting than the greatest dribbler to ever live, but to each their own.

Just letting you know that you put "L" instead of "N". #spellingpolice

Had a few emails with work colleagues last week about exactly this.

My choice of phrasing was that, whilst Messi is undoubtedly the most effective dribbler, watching him play doesn't evoke as much excitement as players like Zidane, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho...
