A real pity. I think he is worth the 150K per week in relation to what other players at other clubs earn. Trully rate him as a defender. Hercules has hinted there are other issues though which makes it not as simple as just signing the deal.

My only wish is that we sell him abroad. PSG anyone... £50 million. I cant bare to see us strengthen another rival as we did with Walker.

Hope our scouts are looking for his replacement already.

People who think we should keep Toby at any cost are baffling to me. Not saying his demands are extreme, but we honestly have no idea what they are and so often the media is miles wide of the mark on wages. At the same time I would love to keep Toby and him and Jan combined are probably the best duo in Europe. I hope it works out but I genuinely think our planning has started to pay off and we now have solid backups and long term replacements for him.

Sell Toby, get De Vrij for free, that's a Levy deal all over
Not sure De Vrij would be keen to come here behind Vertonghen and Sanchez.

Probably need to be thinking about a long-term left-footed replacement for Vertonghen. Not sure who is out there - at a reasonable price.

De Vrij plays in a back 3 for Lazio, I still think back 3 is our best formation, I think we could persuade him that way. Whether or not wages wise we get blown out by other teams is a bigger factor

He’s the best centre back in the league ffs. If we sell him the year after selling Walker then what type of message does that send out to Kane, Eriksen et al?

I tend to agree with you - but I think Poch prefers the 4231. If we bring in Malcom (or similar), then we are left with Eriksen, Dele, Lamela, Son, Lucas and Malcom for 2 spots behind Kane. We don't pay high enough wages to sit that many AMs on the bench...

Depends. Say we kick on and finish 2nd this year with Vertonghen/Sanchez? And, say we can use that money to find a long-term replacement for Dembele?

Is Toby a luxury we can cash in on? I would say he is less vital to the team right now than Walker was last season.

Whether it’s true or not about Toby, Jan Vertonghen needs to be recognised for his commitment and loyalty.

Comfortably the best CB in the league in his debut season then got cruelly scapegoated by a lot of the spurs fan base and could’ve quite rightly quit the club. He kicked on, signed away his prime years to us for way less than £100k a week and has proven that he is the best CB in the league and potentially the best in Europe. To my knowledge he has never spoken about about being unhappy or wanting to leave.

Love Jan. A modern spurs great.

Spot on, a true model professional.

I'd argue he's better than Toby currently anyway.

He seems to give confidence and calmness to the players around him. Whereas Toby was all over the place with Foyth against Rochdale.

There’s a lot of players that have a serious hammy and are never the same again especially at 29 even if it’s just a 10% drop off. Michael Owen and Torres are two that spring to mind. Look at Danny Rose now after a serious injury he’s clearly not the same player. I saw Lucas skin Toby x3 in training and just put that down to it being a training session but after Rochdale I’m actually wondering if he has lot 10% of the pace he never really had. How about this scenario the club realise he’s lost 10% he’s not played much rest of season, his stock still massively high and they actually get £70m for a player on a downward curve.

There’s always a case to be made for cashing in on an asset, but in football the best teams generally keep their best players. We’ve been unable to do that historically, and apparently very little has changed.

If Toby was at City, Utd or Chelsea he’d be paid what he’s worth, but Levy obviously has other plans.

Letd not do this again to ourselves and pretend its ok if he goes.

We did it with Walker and we are currently worse off for it
