Player watch: Toby Alderweireld

In the utterly berserk and obscene world of football wages,150k is not a colossal amount for a player like Toby. On the downside though, he's never going to be worth this much again and we have umpteen players who could easily argue that they're worth as much. If Toby goes, I can see Vertonghen looking at the exit door as well, closely followed by a few others. We should have a new pay structure for next season anyway, so maybe this is where it needs to start.

The concern is also that there may be players who have clauses along the lines of "match top paid player's wages" in their contracts. Upping Toby to £150k may result in others having similar increases. Of course, this may not be the case.

BEN on FTL saying that it's not down to wages either. The issue is the agent. The agent is getting on everyone's bad side, insisting on a set release clause that is out of line.

This ties in with what others have said.

But of course, it's because we won't pay the wages :banghead:

He's obviously going. I just can't believe we'd be stupid enough to not pay him £150K a week which is clearly commensurate with his abilities, given the fact our turnover will be £400M odd next season and therefore we can comfortably support a £200M PA wage bill.

As a side note, Will be interesting if Poch cuts him out of the action, what with the World Cup approaching.

How do you get our turnover will be £400m next season.

Perhaps, but why wouldn't he want to be here? Because we're too stubborn to pay the best players the wages they deserve?

Stop trying to make out that this all somehow beyond our (Levy's) control, it's really not.

Maybe he's just seeing us as a stepping stone? He hasn't been here long here to be expected to show love for the club imo. The most important thing this season is that we have been capable to perform without him.

Again, the idea that he should be earning more than Jan is quite disrespectful to our best CB who has stayed with us through a couple of rough/turbulent years.

As far as I'm aware, all the ITK we've had on it has said it's not just about wages yet some people keep insisting it's just because we won't pay him.

SIssoko & Llorente sitting on a combined 120k+ doing absolutely nothing, yet we’ll keep these chumps in our squad whilst strengthening a rival with one of the best CBs in the country

But it’s okay as according to some on here he’s behind Foyth. Fuck sake

The player is letting that happen though. We can't just blame the agents all the time. They are employed by the player and act with his bidding. If Alderweireld really wanted it signed and all completed he'd just sign the contract on the table and wouldnt let his agent dictate some ridiculous release clause.

Blaming the agent is a convenient way out.

Yep, agent is being difficult, but then when he knows there is interest from Europe's elite clubs it's to be expected.

For the record I want him to stay, and hope he's happy to do so, but there is a reason why we are where we are and it's not IMO down to the financials.

Its because he wants to go then. It can't be anything else.

Quite sad because having built the best back line in the league we seem to now be dismantling it because we won’t pay the going rate for a world class CB (I’m guessing if we did then the clause might be dropped too)

The key is that there are elite clubs after him....he wants recognition that he is an elite player it seems and we are not prepared to do that

Let’s not forget he was happy to swap Southampton for us when we showed some interest so there is no massive surprise if he is looking out for himself but he would be a huge asset and first team starter for all of our rivals in the league that I’m sure of
