Does anyone have the stat's on how many we have conceded this season with him and without him in the team this season ?

Roughly

With P 14 L 3

Without P 24 L 3

Not sure on goals but we really haven’t missed him. Infact our 2 worst defensive displays were with him West Ham and Rochdale. Personally have a feeling he is on a downward curve. Maybe be wrong but just a gut feeling.

As far as I'm aware, all the ITK we've had on it has said it's not just about wages yet some people keep insisting it's just because we won't pay him.

If there’s one thing you can rely on in life, whether it’s football, politics, anything, it’s that people believe what they want to believe. And having believed it, very rarely change their minds. Actual evidence becomes irrelevant most of the time.

If Toby’s agent is being an intolerable dick, lets blame Levy. Fits the pattern perfectly.

Quite sad because having built the best back line in the league we seem to now be dismantling it because we won’t pay the going rate for a world class CB (I’m guessing if we did then the clause might be dropped too)

The key is that there are elite clubs after him....he wants recognition that he is an elite player it seems and we are not prepared to do that

Let’s not forget he was happy to swap Southampton for us when we showed some interest so there is no massive surprise if he is looking out for himself but he would be a huge asset and first team starter for all of our rivals in the league that I’m sure of

Most likely not. Maybe the agent wants a new contract now and then have a oil club come in the summer and pay the clause which will give the agent even more money?

Levy recently went on record saying we won't lose any players 'who we want to keep' this summer.

So expecting the narrative on Toby to change from 'best centre back in Europe' to 'injury prone, turning 29 with a bad attitude' very soon.
This is the thing that gets my goat a little bit: why does Levy make statements like that when he clearly doesn't have all the tools to keep his word in situations like the one we're in now with Alderweireld? He's just leaving himself wide open to criticism for a situation that he couldn't 100% control in the first place.

I still won't be happy if Toby goes regardless, but I'd be a bit less put out if we hadn't heard it direct from our Chairman's mouth that we won't sell any players who we want to keep. But yeah, like @thebenjamin says, it's so easy to forsee that the truth will suddenly bend to fit the reality if Toby does refuse to sign this summer and the club gets backed into a corner with regard to selling him. Rather than recognise that we haven't managed to keep a player that we'd all have preferred to, the narrative will change to say that he's suddenly no longer a key part of our jigsaw. Oceania was at war with Eastasia: Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia.

Also think length of contract is probably an issue. I’d be very surprised if we were happy to offer 5 years where as others would. Personally I think 3 years + 1 year option is fair takes him to 33.

BEN on FTL saying that it's not down to wages either. The issue is the agent. The agent is getting on everyone's bad side, insisting on a set release clause that is out of line.
Why can't toby just fire his agent or tell his agent dont include release clause ..

Given some of the dodgy defenders the money clubs have, I think he'll probably stay in this league unfortunately.

Well the decision is in our hands. I'm sure the likes of Bayern, Madrid and PSG would gladly take him off our hands if given the chance.

The player is letting that happen though. We can't just blame the agents all the time. They are employed by the player and act with his bidding. If Alderweireld really wanted it signed and all completed he'd just sign the contract on the table and wouldnt let his agent dictate some ridiculous release clause.

Blaming the agent is a convenient way out.
Toby is not some 18 year old air head too. He's a grown man, who's always given the impression of being intelligent and knowing his own mind. His agent will be doing his bidding, not the other way round.

Only hope now is he goes for a big fee and genuinely is on a downward curve, otherwise it’s a horrible mistake

Are we sure? He couldn't get in the team at atletico. Is 29. Has had a few major injuries the last couple of years and is asking for more than any of bayerns players earn including lewandowski.

Trying not to go over the top, but honestly he has just had one stand out season in the last couple of years (since leaving Ajax at least).

Because maybe, just maybe, Toby wants the same as his agent? Just a thought

A little while ago now, at the start of the season I think, Toby said he didn’t get involved in these things at all and left it all to his agent.

It isn’t hard to imagine that until it comes to the crunch when a final decision has to be taken, things are still the same. As far as I can see, this is still in the negotiating stage.

Genuine question though Tiger, (because I don't know the answer): is Toby one of the better paid centre halves in the league? Or are his wages comparable with say Williams or Jagielka at Everton? I only ask because, if he's not being paid the sort of salary that "lesser" defenders receive, it's hard to argue that "it's not just about wages", wouldn't you say?

I think he's come on a little bit since he couldn't get in at Atletico and was loaned to Southampton. He's a top class player in the prime of his career.

We allegedly have offered him £110k a week. Making him one of the best paid defenders in the pl.
