Genuine question though Tiger, (because I don't know the answer): is Toby one of the better paid centre halves in the league? Or are his wages comparable with say Williams or Jagielka at Everton? I only ask because, if he's not being paid the sort of salary that "lesser" defenders receive, it's hard to argue that "it's not just about wages", wouldn't you say?

I don't know. I've no idea what certain players have in their private contracts. A lot of stuff on the net about player wages is completely made up. We've "allegedly" offered him £110k.

I think he's come on a little bit since he couldn't get in at Atletico and was loaned to Southampton. He's a top class player in the prime of his career.

I think he's class and would be massively dissapointed if we lose him. But one of the teams mentioned was madrid. Not sure they would break the bank for a player that couldn't get into their rivals team.

When contracts come up our fans usually just say pay him what he wants.
Toby.
Kane.
Poch.
Eriksen.
Dele.

Other players as well.

We are not city, we do not have unlimited funds so will have to offer the best wages we can while staying in budget and realising that others will want rises too.
I'd love it if money wasn't an issue, i'm sure levy would too but it's not the reality.
As itk has said it is probably not just about the money anyway.

BEN on FTL saying that it's not down to wages either. The issue is the agent. The agent is getting on everyone's bad side, insisting on a set release clause that is out of line.
I'm glad that the club resist agents demands. Fucking dickheads ruining football.

Situation with Toby is different than Walker or even Bale or Modric. Cause we have played a lot of games while he was injured, including those against top PL and European teams, and we did greaet. So we kind of know how it will be without him. Yes, I belive that we would be even better with him but we know how to deal without him. With the players I mentioned we were strugling to replace them season after selling them.

I hope that if we finish season strong e.g. with FA Cup, TOP 4 finish and good CL camaping he will sign. But if we are going to sale him, I hope it will be out of Premier League. Cause selling best players is one thing but strenghting rivals is another. We cannot do both every year.

We've all seen this movie before. He's gone, probably been tapped up by City. I wouldn't be surprised if this Times piece has been leaked by the club as part of the PR campaign designed to warm supporters up to the idea of his departure.

A shame but shows that we still haven't changed our place in the food chain.

When you have clubs that measure their turnover in gdp then we will always be lower in the foodchain. Just ask barca.

Are we sure? He couldn't get in the team at atletico. Is 29. Has had a few major injuries the last couple of years and is asking for more than any of bayerns players earn including lewandowski.

He couldn't get in Atletico's team because of Godin and Miranda who happened to be amongst the best defenders in Europe at the time.

FFS.

Leave the site for a day and look what happens.

I'm blaming the Scousers for the over exuberant amount they've agreed to pay VvD.

I'm off to kick a squirrel and have an angry poo. Not in any particular order.

If that's accurate, he can stay on the bench for me and that includes the big game against Juve coming up.

Keep the Vertonghen and Sanchez partnership blossoming.

personally think this is why we stumped up the money for dave in the summer, club must of had an inkling he wasnt willing to sign an extension. and if thats the case, i think we will be fine. toby is world class without a doubt, but the way verts has taken the mantle this season and last season really, i think we will be fine. just hope he isnt sold to one of our rivals again.

Not sure De Vrij would be keen to come here behind Vertonghen and Sanchez.

Probably need to be thinking about a long-term left-footed replacement for Vertonghen. Not sure who is out there - at a reasonable price.

de ligt would be a dream.

Possibly but they've just brought in Laporte not to mention Stones is there. Of course it wouldn't be all that surprising to see City just try gobble up all the talent but if Toby thinks going there is a good idea he is being badly advised. I have a feeling it's Mourinho who's being doing the tapping up. Desperate for cbs there

There is another way to interpret this whole situation.

Toby has had a serious injury. There’s always some uncertainty about whether a player will make a 100% recovery. Maybe they will retain all their skills but won’t be able to play quite as much, like Dembele, or maybe they’ll lose a bit of aggression or timing or reaction speed, as has happened to lots of players, but not all. But maybe he’ll come back as one of the very best defenders in the world.

It makes perfect sense to both parties to wait until he’s properly fit before going into advanced negotiations. Anything else would be a bit amateur to be honest. And unless Toby’s agent is a fool, he’ll know that any deal he could do now, with anyone including Spurs, (obviously), could be improved once he’s proved his fitness.

I don’t have much confidence in the unsubstantiated stories about final wage demands and offers. They reek of media guesswork and pamper to fans’ fears, hopes and prejudices.

Every club could use Toby, but I wouldn't mind leaving him on the bench for now. For all the small mistakes Davinson is making, we're still doing more than OK defensively. Toby has the World Cup on his mind and needs playing time. The prospect of continuously being left out of the starting eleven will not appeal him in this crucial period.

It's The Times. It's a subscription based news outlet, not a clickbait based rag. The story has clearly come from the club. The next question is...why.

I think the club is now playing public hardball with Toby he has a better bid away and the club are now going public with that to justify his omission from the squad for the majority of the rest of the season at the end of which I expect he will be sold, domestically, to one of our rivals.

I think you are probably mistaken.

On three counts:

Your respect for the Times

The story coming from the club as an excuse to not play him.

His determination to force a deal.

We’ll see.
