Probably my favorite Spurs player at the moment. Epitomises everything about a true professional player and is quickly becoming a legend, imo.

Just need to see him lift a cup and he's there IMO, or he retires here.

No Wanyama and Dembele protecting the defence for most of the season plus no Toby has affected our spine.

To suffer Tobyosis is a quite normal condition. Sanchez has minimised the effects remarkably for a 21 year old league rookie.

I agree Sanchez has been excellent but let’s not pretend Toby hasn’t been missed.

It's what we have had to deal with over the last decade but ulimately we have continued to improve. Club before player for me, I'm not gonna grovel and beg a player to stay, if he doesn't sign a new contract flog him to the budgets bidder, preferably abroad or at least not to United.

Not sure how that is relevant to my post.

There's some great comments from Poch about Jan in this article. He also says that he's going to be offered a new contract.....

He deserves to be praised. In nearly four seasons a lot of things have happened in between. I am so proud that he has achieved this level today. Not only on the pitch but off the pitch. In my opinion he’s one of the best centre backs in the Premier League and in Europe," said the Spurs boss.

"He has unbelievably quality, physical condition, technique. He has improved in an aspect that was so important for him, the mental aspect. Now I think he is a complete centre back. He deserves to be praised. We have worked a lot together to reach the level that he is at today."

He added: "Now he realises he is so strong, he looks like a 20-year-old because when he runs he is faster, he is like my new dog [a Rhodesian ridgeback]. It is easy for him to run.

"Physicality is his talent. It is genetic. He runs easily, he is fast – it is his natural condition. He is an athlete. It is up to him, but he could play until he is 40 because his physical condition comes very naturally to him."

Much was made in the past about Vertonghen's body language, sometimes when things weren't going right, with the Belgian's laconic nature and Pochettino admits it was one of the first things that had to change.

"I remember his body language before we came when I watched the game against Liverpool when Suarez scored, the season before we came," he explained.

"[Jan] was slouched in the tunnel. I told him when I came, ‘Why are you like that? You are here for a battle! You cannot show this body language – you are a warrior! It is difficult after showing this energy to go out and take part in a battle and fight.

We worked a lot on this aspect and yes, it is true that we clash a lot in training because he is clever and always has an argument and a reason why, but in the end I appreciate a lot his efforts in trying to give to the team what we expect from him.

"But it is good to praise him because he is a very good player who sometimes does not get valued enough."

Vertonghen's contract ends next summer and Pochettino made it clear a new deal will be offered by chairman Daniel Levy.

"The club believes that he needs to be rewarded," he said. "He is one of the important players in the side."

Yeah definitely think he's the best in the league. So consistent this season. And as Poch says, he seems to have improved in all aspects of his game. It's great that he seems so under radar because he could play for any team in the world.

Phenomenal player and one of the best centre backs around. Very underrated by those outside the club.

Dude, could you remove your photobucket image not shown image from your footer please? when you post it takes up about half the page to tell me 3rd party hosting is disabled.

Thanks, it's often bugged me (if I could find where to disable signatures I would, but it's only shown to 3rd degree mods)

Why can't you disable sigs? I did mine years ago, so much easier.

Found it now, shamed into action...

So do I need to do anything?
