Response to losing Alderweireld

What would be the best solution to Alderweireld leaving?

Barring injuries Jan will be able to play until 34/35 years at PL level imo.

don't know much about him, is he good on the ball and mobile enough to play a high line defense for us? newcastle gives me an impression that they sit deep and counter-attack
I'm not sure about his ball playing capabilities tbh, but from what I've seen of him he's excellent defensively, a powerhouse athlete (if a little injury prone) a leader, an organizer, and resolute, the type that will literally run through brick walls in the course of defending.

I really like him. The difference in Newcastle's defensive record from when he plays to when he doent play is stark.

We also have a significant issue with our HG quote for Europe and he would help that. Everyone needs to take into account that in order to buy non-HG now we pretty much have to sell. So to replace a potentially foreign player with a HG option would be prudent.

While that would be good news why would we wait to announce and let all these rumours manifest. It literally takes up most of poch press conference these days.

A swap with martial would make it bearable though

Just to add a little to your closing sentence.

Martial's contract expires 30th June 2019
Supposedly no current talks regarding renewal.

If we choose not to take up the option of Toby for a further year, his contract will expire 30th June 2019.

United have a one year club option on Martial so in reality it won't expire before 2020.

He's never been blessed with pace or any great physicality. Think he can stay in the first team until 34 then even do another year as a squad player for us.

I hope he makes it to ten years with us so he can get a testimonial.

Defensively I think Stefan de Vrij would be a good option, out of contract this summer!

Matthias de Ligt would be an outstanding long term option, continuing the Ajax theme...

I’m not sure about Dier as a CB, he seems to only look comfortable there when he is playing next to Toby. But if Poch sees him there then we could reinvest in a CM, like Diawara, de Jong, or Zakiria at B M Gladbach, bug powerful midfielder, big fan!

I'd probably rather De Vrij than De Ligt taking into account cost but I honestly don't think we'd have a huge gaping hole at CB if Toby were to leave.

CM is the most important. We can't rely on Dembele's fitness week in week out.

We just get Dier to do what he does now, but 5 paces deeper.

It's pretty rare that you are lucky enough to have an almost identical replacement, already in your midst, who doesn't even need to bed in or adapt. Dier pretty much is Toby Alderweireld 5 years ago, but probably a bit further on in his development.

We've already brought in Sanchez and Foyth and have players like Eyoma and Tanganga bubbling under.
Sorry but I don’t think Dier has the CB brain Toby or Verts do. He seems to get caught out with balls over he’s head more than he should. But if Poch really thinks Dier can be one of the best CB’s in the EPL there must be something in it. If indeed he did say that?

This is a great thread. The only rule is to use the word “if” at least once in every sentence, right?

So, who’s going to replace Toby’s replacement if he twists his ankle in his second game and if it turns out that he can’t play for the rest of the season ?

Your go.

Our manager thinks he can play till he is 40

I have heard many managers and pundits say this about players over the years. I believe Giggs, Kevin Phillips, Gordon Strachan and Sheringham are the only 4 outfield players to have played in the Prem in their 40s.

Love Poch but i highly doubt Jan will still be playing for us in 9 years time.

I really like Toby and hope he stays and signs a new contract.

BUT on the other hand Sanchez shows a lot of potential and has already said he’s happy here as playing and it’s going well for him.

So unless we’ll play three centre backs again someone is gonna miss out...

Sometimes you just have to freshen parts of your team up, as I said I really like Toby but Sanchez has done well and will continue to improve so wouldn’t be as bad a loss as say last season.

I would probably bring another centre back in if Toby does leave though as you can’t leave yourself short in that position especially if Dier needed in midfield.

I kinda dont like this thread.
We should not be speculating about this, like the garbage press.

Hope Toby stays. But if he wants out, wants stupid money etc then we should cash in.
