i just don't see where all this apparent upside is for us to work with. you might eradicate a lot of the thicko moments out of his game over time but he's not going to become any more athletic and his technique in terms of delivery isn't going to improve a great deal at this point in his career.
How much more athletic do we need him to be? He's decently strong and quick, and of course his delivery can improve. He's 25.

Having said that, I would like to see him rotating with KWP for the RB spot, and Trippier sold. I think Trippier is a good RB but he's just not quite right for our style and tactics.

Willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. A full pre-season under Poch and we could see a much better Aurier next season. He has the attributes, just needs to be coached.

What frustrates me about his crossing is that usually when he picks the ball up on the right, in a crossing position, he won't get the ball out from under his feet. He'll take a touch and stand square to the box - not the sort of positioning you need in order to fire a cross in

Absolutely genuine question. But what are the attributes you talk of in respect to being a top class right back?

Would it take an entire pre-season to coach him how to take a throw in correctly? What is he? A goldfish?

Not gonna defend the foul throws, that’s just careless and lazy. Pretty sure he won’t do it again after today’s debacle.

With regards his attributes I’d say he has pace, strength and positional sense. He is rash but I think they may come from an anxiousness he’s not first choice yet.

He did only arrive late in the transfer window so I think it’s fair to give him a full season to adjust. If he’s still doing the same in Nov/Dec then maybe we can all judge with more authority

Of all clubs spurs fans should know better than any other that full backs can go from pretty awful to the best in the league. Football fans just never fucking learn do we. Anyone remember the response to the Rose contract?

Might not happen but if there's anyone in our team who could have a Rose/Walker like turnaround in performance it's Aurier. You can see his quality, he's gonna get time to sort it out, it's just whether he does sort it out or not.

Throwing the ball and not lunging in for tackles (especially in the box/having been already booked) are pretty basic shit.

He's done both these on multiple occasions now.

I honestly fail to see how this type of thing can be 'coached' out of a 25 year old man.

Give the lad time ffs. He’s got strength, pace, decent technique. Most of his problems blantantly come from lack of confidence. But isn’t that understandable being a new signing, in a new league/country/team. He’s only been with us 6 months ffs.

Poch has already proven he can improve players, so why not have some patience?? No one says we were buying a ready-made superstar. We can’t afford those players. So give the guy some time. Walker was still pulling out similar performances up until 2-3 years ago and he had only ever played in this country. And look how he finally found some consistency. So I don’t think it’s too much to ask to give Aurier time.

It’s called anxiety mate, which leads to bad decisions. Once he is more settled these things will disappear from his game.

He didn't have the best of games but he's a good player who could very well benefit from being given a bit of time, a commodity very rarely given, if indeed actually acknowledged as being relevant on SC. As we all (ought to) know, one shouldn't write anyone off too soon, we've all been bitten by that.

Definitely cause for concern re Aurier. We all want him to do well, and it’s his first season in the PL. But, think there are concentration issues with him, which means he doesn’t read the flow of the game very well consistently, which obviously impacts his positional sense as a footballer, both defensively and going forward.

He’s reactive as a result, which will sometimes see great last ditch, saving blocks like we saw today. But, the flip side is, we’ll see needless lunges, and desperate tackles, because he made the wrong decision, and wasn’t positionally aware in the first place. We’ve seen the results in red cards, penalties etc., in critical games. The repeated throw in violations are all part of this. It’s someone that doesn’t have his head in the game, and so his movement, his positioning and his decision-making will all be affected.

Hate to say it, but I’m actually glad that he’s not available against Juve. We might lack some dynamism down that right flank with Trippier, but I think we have more security in defence, and we’re more solid as a unit both in attack and defence.

see i just don't see where this pace is that people keep referencing. maybe it's my imagination but i'm sure that van aanholt and the big norwegian lad absolutely breezed past him at some point today, i can't really recall many examples of where he's beaten a player down the outside either. sheer athleticism isn't the be all and end all but if you don't have top level technique or intelligence to compensate then i don't think you have the ingredients of a top quality full back.

I don’t think he has had many opportunities or confidence to get into a full gallop yet. He is definitely quick though. In the same way Kane looks quicker than he is because of anticipation and body positioning Aurier can look slower because of poor body positioning and lack of anticipation. As I said elsewhere mistakes like this can be put down to lack of confidence and anxiety. I think he’ll improve. He has the raw ingredients.

Hope people don't complain when I quote these posts in future when he starts to play well. :p

They will. And you’ll get called petty for quoting them rather than the guilty parties actually looking at themselves and conceding they were impatient wallies

Or quote this if he's still crap in a years time?

Honestly though I don't see him making it, his final ball is worse than Walker's and he's not even as quick as I thought he was from the little I saw of him at PSG. I would love for him to make it but I don't think he will..
