I was OK with VAR until I saw it in action.

I think it could still be useful in certain very specific and restricted situations, but if they persist with anything like what we saw today, if they undermine the referee's authority like this, and if they insist that every goal is automatically reviewed, then they will rip the soul out of the game.

How can the authorities be allowed to affect our game like this, without any proper consultation with the people who make the game: managers, players and above all, the fans? The whole thing stinks.

goal line technology is a no brainer for me, maybe contentious offsides.

BUT reviewing every goal/incident is a terrible idea. Let the referee make the call like they always have.

Can you imagine how many penalties would be given or goals disallowed from pretty much every single corner kick if we are reviewing it back each and everytime, considering the amount of pushing/pulling etc .. and if they arent reviewed why not, they are goal scoring opportunities arent they?

I thought it was a good idea in theory, but as pointed out earlier imagine having to hold your celebration every time you score as it is reviewed for the most inane infringement. After each goal today I was waiting for the replay before i could celebrate expecting a reason for it to be disallowed.

But it undermines the ref on the pitch to some degree. You could see the guy tonight and his confidence was draining away by the minute.

The ref is in charge, if he's scared about VAR undermining his authority then he shouldn't keep calling on it.

The best thing about football is celebrating your team scoring a goal. VAR takes away that moment.

VAR will only work when it is the actual official referee using the on pitch ref as a runner. It won't work in its current form no matter how good the technology gets.

How come the best sport in the world has this laughable nonsense when Cricket/Rugby/Tennis can all sort it out and make it part of the spectacle, We just make everyone want a fight (even more than usual) or lose the will to live.

Just give each manager a couple of reviews a half and if they fuck them away that's their problem, then you're not constantly being interrupted by some anonymous arsehole who could have betfair in play odds on his laptop next to his VAR monitors...

Or even better give the ref a VR helmet (VAVRR anyone?) and feed him the replays...

Out of interest, is it going as shit in other countries? (i saw the confederations cup was farcical)

I think England has been the worst I've seen so far. VAR is getting involved way too much and for too long in these cup games. Germany or the US has probably done the best job with it. Italy and Portugal have probably had the most head scratching VAR decisions, but it's been over a whole season compared to about 12 games in England.

I was for VAR before this match, however after being at the ground and experiencing the confusion that occurs when it is used, I've decided I'm now against it. The booing from the entire stadium towards the official during the penalty fiasco tells you all you need to know about what fans in the ground are feeling when having to sit through it

It's been a shambles in the A-League this season. This is the worst use of it I've seen so far: http://www.news.com.au/sport/footba...s/news-story/6f9d0c7b75400a06d63b6e52491abf89

Hopefully the video plays, but if not then the quotes should be enough.

Central Coast coach Paul Okon was at a loss to explain it. “If both challenges were violent I think we would have seen protests from the Wanderers players and bench ... and there was no reaction,” he said. “The reaction came from the gentleman sitting upstairs. If you came to this game tonight and left here no longer in love with football, who could blame you?”

Crazy that in the super rich sport of top level football they act like they never had a plan for using VAR. Considering that many other sports have lots of experience that can be learnt from it is crazy. Sad when we are talking about anything but the football

Whats your verdict. apparently being used in the WC, that's gonna piss a lot of fans off.

I know its been trialled to remove the bad blunders from the refs but you would think with the benefit of slo mo replays they should get it 100% right and they didn't.

Would it have been better with a competent video assistant ?

I think they need to keep the stoppages to a minimum, 50 min first half today. Didn't work for me, sorry.

I think it’s the basic standard of the actual referees that’s the fundamental problem. All the technology in the world will struggle to make a shite ref any less shite.

And let’s face it, they’re all pretty shite.

I think heavy investment is needed in refereeing as a whole. I think we’d benefit from young, properly trained referees instead of the usual 40-something retired police officers we generally have now.

Stops the flow of the game. Takes the emotion out of it. Takes way too long. Decisions made from it are still extremely wrong. It’s a travesty. Do away with it. Now. Hope the idiots at FIFA actually come to their senses for once in their lives and decides not to use this buggy, horribly implemented technology in the WC.

What didn’t they get right? Llorente did grab the guys shirt, we did get a penalty and Son did make the most exaggerated stop I’ve seen for a while (even if I have seen others pause briefly).

The idea is, eventually, players will stop doing stupid shit because they know they won’t get away with it, and long term it should improve the game.

It’s in its infancy and it needs to evolve, the process needs finessing and football and fans will need to evolve with it, embrace it.

Or stop whining about refs mistakes and leave it he game open to undue influence, human error, bias and at worst, corruption.

With maybe the exception of Tennis almost no sport has successfully implemented VAR in a way that removes the random variance of referee interpretations of rules. The NFL here in the US is a great example of that and how dumb it can be but they've also gamified the system by limiting the number of reviews a coach can ask for to try and make it more entertaining. Not a model I think the PL should follow but better than currently having no model... maybe?

To be honest it is a bit hypocritical with every pundit under the sun moaning that we need video technology when decisions were going wrong, every single motd it seemed to be mentioned, and now every pundit is just cussing the system that they supposedly wanted.

It's just not working well at the moment though, if decisions were made at the right time, within 20/30 seconds or so and were clear cut, then great, it's done it's job. If everyone is stood around for 5 minutes at a time for questionable decisions that aren't even awarded correctly afterwards, then it becomes a farce. Adding a blizzard to that really doesn't help the image lol. Needs to either be sorted out quickly to become a usable system, or drastic changes need to be made. Hopefully it becomes a lot more seamless and becomes a good thing without all the negatives, whether that can happen I don't know though.

Blows my mind that they allowed VAR use to be executed so poorly. In application in Germany/US it's been handled pretty well without breaking up the flow of the game.

Today they were almost trying to exaggerate how poorly it could be used. If I wore a tinfoil hat I'd say the FA was trying to do this on purpose so they wouldn't have to adopt it. Because this was a total farce.

The execution was piss poor when compared to how well it's been used in Germany and the US. When it's used properly it's quite effective and pretty quick.
