Ofc it will but it will stop all the bottler bullshit we have to listen too. OFC CL qualification is the most important thing but we have a team/squad that should be able to handle bothz

Oh don't get me wrong. I agree and am desperate to land the FA Cup, alongside 4th or better. But you just know what's coming no matter what we do.

Was exactly my point mate. People using the whole Wigan wont the fa Cup bullshit is laughable. If we win the fa Cup this year, the feeling around the club and the media frenzy will be a huge positive for us. It will also show our players that they can achieve silver ware at this club and won't need to move on. It will put us on a great step for our new stadium aswell. No trophies = failure.

All about context isn't it. Wigan were never going to make any headway at the top of the BPL - they don't have the infrastructure or fan-base for it. Leicester winning the BPL wasn't going to cement a place for them at the elite level of English football. Us winning the FA would be massive for the reasons you give - for the very reason that we have already made considerable headway at the top of the division and are now in a position with a great young team and manager that are improving, a new stadium coming online, a considerable bump in revenues etc. If we didn't have any of those things, winning the cup would be a fantastic memory but have little impact on our status - just as it has had little impact on Wigan's status, and hasn't prevented them dropping and not coming up. Mind you, if Leicester dropped down they would have to fight their way back up - they couldn't just wander around saying look, we won the Prem once, so just let us go up again (the single biggest source of the Liverpool delusion - we dominated English football once so we should be winning league titles forever more, no matter how uncompetitive the club is as a going concern).

The point is correct, though - Poch was putting into aspirations the club maxim - aim for the stars and even failure (winning the FA Cup, this season) will have an echo of glory. Personally, I don't have a problem with what he said and our future depends on progress in the league with the so-called minor trophies being a garnish to the main course, lights for the Christmas Tree.

No one ever said we don't want to win the FA cup, of course we do, it would be amazing.

But if you think that winning an FA cup will stop all the talk of our players leaving then you're in for a shock. Then we'll have to win a "proper" trophy to keep our players, it's a never ending cycle of trying to please people who we shouldn't give a fuck about.

Qualifying for next year's CL is FAR more important than winning the FA Cup. Much as I'd love to see us win the Cup, I'd rather see us in the CL again next season.

If you don't agree, fair enough. But being permanent residents of the Champions League is, I'd suggest, much likelier to help keep our stars, and attract new ones, than a domestic trophy. Several nights out at Wembley versus one day out at Wembley, as it were.

Fuck that. The league cup win against Chelsea is my best spurs memory. Being in that stadium that day was magical. Winning against Real Madrid was great but not as good as that.

We aren’t Arsenal and their fourth placed trophy.

Modern football has polluted people’s minds. It’s about glory!

Alternatively, look at a lot of successful clubs and their journey as winners started with domestic cups. The City team first got a taste of winning in the FA Cup, Fergie has often talked about that first FA Cup as very important for the players and clubs mind-set. If you don't believe me, then listen to the ex professional players. They are not just mentioning it to knock us. Whatever you think of their punditry they know far more about professional footballers mind-sets than you or I ever can. It gives players (or any sportsman in fact) belief and know how they can draw on in bigger games to come. It can also give hungry players even more hunger to repeat the process and help convince players that they can win things with Spurs.

The reason winning the cups meant nothing to those teams you've listed above is because they were anomalies. The players knew it, the fans knew it. A great day out the fans won't forget, but those clubs had others issues and other priorities. Our priority (or it should be) is to win trophies and be successful. Not just become every neutrals favourite other team to watch.
Can someone please write me a macro to auto-Winner @dagraham posts as and when they happen? It would save me a lot of time. Kthxbye

Winning the FA cup would be great but I agree, it wont necessarily keep hold of our best players. Players want League and CL medals, thats the pinnacle. Cups nowadays are just a bonus for them

Just qualifying for the Champions league won't necessarily be enough either. CL is the minimum that our rivals expect.

It was so much easier when we were shit. We the fans had no expectations and no worries. Well we did, but we were not worried about losing our best players because we didn't have any :(

No but I think it's more important to the "process" of becoming the club we all want to be. If we miss out on champions league that will set us back way more then not winning the FA cup

So bored of this self-justification for not winning anything and always, always falling short - the idea of an article actually titled "trophies don't matter" is an absolute joke.

So yeah sorry, but I want to see us actually win things. Over a quarter of a CENTURY since this club won the FA Cup - that is an utter, utter disgrace. We used to hold the record for winning it more than anyone else.

Only Spurs fans could really embrace this kind of article. Fans of the rest of the top 6 are laughing at how intensely Spursy that article actually is.

Luckily, I'm confident in winning the FA Cup this season, for the first time in forever. Poch and the boys can do it, and I think they want to, and will want to even more after the Juve game.

agree entirely with Bobbins, the whole premise of that article is laughable. I'm going to write a similar one titled Why I Didn't Wanna Shag Beyonce Away. we have to be the only fanbase to continually come up with reasons why such and such trophy that we keep failing in is beneath us. in all the years we spent in the UEFA Cup/Europa League, that was somehow beneath us because only the Champions League mattered. and in that time, clubs like Chelsea, Man U, and Atletico Madrid that are all currently bigger/better than us have won it. the FA Cup isn't important, yet every other Top 6 club has won it recently. all the other Top 6 clubs except Arsenal have won the League Cup since we last did, but that doesn't matter because it's not the league or Champions League. and yet we have a million and one excuses for why we can't win either of those and shouldn't even be in the conversation. even in a lowered-bar season where every single one of our Top 6 rivals massively under-achieved, we've a million and one excuses for why we weren't able to beat Leicester

it's either we're a big club or we aren't one. and if we are, then we need to stop finding excuses and expect to be judged by the same criteria as all the rest. and if we're not, then let's stop pretending things like the league or the CL are realistic targets and instead set our sights on the more attainable targets. like the domestic cups.

The thing I'm actually most worried about is maintaining our record of winning something in every decade since the war. Only us and Utd have that.

Funny though how in the past the overall media narrative was "Spurs' best players need to leave for CL football" and now we look like establishing ourselves in the CL it's "Spurs' best players need to leave to win trophies". If we win the FA Cup this year it'll just become "Spurs best players need to leave to win the league".

It's an unwinnable war.

to do that we need to something i have despaired of us doing in my lifetime.........winning an FA cup semi-final!

How many have we lost on the trot since 91? 6? 7?

With this season at Wembley and City and Liverpool out, this is our best chance of doing it in years I think.

I agree. But winning the Cup in isolation without CL qualification (which I believe City got when they won the Cup as well as having a few quid behind them) is meaningless. I am not sure if I can be any clearer than that. I agree with your last few sentences but if we win the Cup and don't get in the top four it will actually harm our prospects of winning future trophies.

I've had days out at Wembley, I have been to games on cup runs. I want my club to win the big titles and compete for the league. If we fall short, we fall short but at least we are trying to aim high rather than putting everything into winning a piece of silverware at the cost of more substantial growth and achievement.

Whoever said it was an either or situation of cl or the fa cup.

Winning the cup and getting in the cl will be far better than just getting cl. If we don't win anything then the players might look at walker at city lifting trophies and think am i ever going to win anything at spurs?

Not saying players will leave but i'd bet they'd be a lot happier with a bit of silverware.

You have read the title of the thread? One poster said winning the fa cup would be "meh".

yeah I don't get the whole "well would you rather win a Cup or finish Top 4?" argument, as though it isn't perfectly feasible to do both

Because message board absolutism.

People saying the cup win won't stop speculation, probably not by the press no. But a) who gives a shit what some morbidly obese mouth breathing drop out thinks b) we seem to have a squad of good eggs for the most part, who know they could earn more elsewhere but bar a couple seem very happy to be at the club.

I'm sure they'd love to win an FA Cup with us, I reckon especially as pros at a club they seem to like with a manager who's close to them, even if some internet punter says it's not important.. then again I'm also a internet punter so what do I know.
