There are a few teams in Europe with great talent that we should be looking to recruit from:

Bayer Leverkusen - Bailey, Brandt, Tah
Lyon - Aouar, Ndombele, Fekir
Ajax - De Jong, De Ligt, Neves

We won't get him as I fear he's City bound, but Wiegl would be ideal. We need a better passer in midfield and he'd be ideal.

We don't play with that kind of DM imo. Our system needs the DM to be an enforcer. It's key for our high pressing.
What we need is a box to box CM. Someone that can move the ball from defence to offense. Someone like Dembele, but younger

Disgree sorry. We lack any foward passing intiative from our midfield. It's one of our major weaknesses. We've never replaced Modric.

Because we don't play like that anymore. Like I said.
What you can gain in passes, you may lose in tackling and defensive awareness.

Weigl is not like Modric. He plays more deep, he's a defensive mid. Modric is more offensive, and he can do what he does at RM, because he has an enforcer behind him (Casemiro)
I'm not against a passer, and I agree we never replaced Modric, but Weigl is not the answer. Weigl is more like Carrick

I think the OP was suggesting that we don't currently use that type of player in Poch's system, not that it isn't needed.

Our solidity in defence last season stemmed from us consistently dominating central midfield with 2 man mountains in Wanyama and Dembele. Whereas this season at times we’ve been fragile in central midfield when we’ve been without one or both of Wanyama and Dembele. Leaving one of them out to include a more creative central midfielder will be to our detriment. Look at the game against Man U at home, their attack was frightening but they couldn’t get the ball as we dominated the central areas.

What’s more pressing is cover for Eriksen as he’s the link between Wanyama/Dier and Dembele, and our attack. As we saw against Southampton our attacking play ground to a halt without him. Depending how we line up next season and even this season there’s a scenario where Eriksen can drop deeper if and when needed.

There’s all this talk about splashing copious amounts of cash, going after big name players etc but in reality we really don’t need many new additions. For me, it’s Lopez (free?) to replace Vorm, Sessegnon £40m?, Diawara £35m? (Dembele understudy) and may be Maddison £25m? (Eriksen understudy). With questions marks over whether Rose will go, circa £40m? plus Sissoko £15-20m) GKN £5m, Janssen £15m and Llorente £10m... our net outlay could be as little as £10-15m.

Completely agree. Many people have talked about how we've missed Toby defensively, but not being able to field Wanyama and Dembélé has been a much bigger issue imo.

Of the players you list, Lopez is going to Real Betis, Maddison we should absolutely be all over and there are people on here who are very excited about the prospect of Diawara, so I'm willing to trust them. Evolution, not revolution.

I rate him highly. We could partner him with Winks/Dier/Wanyama/Dembele and he would definitely make each of them play better.

Diawara stands at 6’0″ tall and is clearly very powerful, meaning he has a striking physical presence as the defensive midfielder, which he uses to good effect when in defensive situations. His dominant stature obviously makes him imposing when in one on one duels with opponents, but it’s his intelligence and reading of the game that I really admire. It’s almost as if the opponent’s pass is forecast to Diawara’s head – his interceptions and prediction of pass direction is very impressive, and if you go by the words of Paolo Maldini, “If I have to make a tackle, then I have already made a mistake”, then you’ll realise how important Diawara’s perception of the game is, at just 20 years old. The fact that the Guinean averages over 3 interceptions per 90 demonstrates his intellect.

He has also shown himself to be well-versed in Napoli’s aggressive man-orientated pressing system. This, in simpler terms, means that he has to shut off passing options for opposing players, and Sarri’s men do this with a high press as well; Diawara is an integral part of this effective press. So, Amadou Diawara’s defensive game, while far from complete, is becoming a stronger aspect of his play – he is backing up his physique with the required intelligence and understanding to operate productively in Maurizio Sarri’s team.

One more thing I want to touch on is Diawara’s technique – specifically his ability to dribble efficiently and at speed with close control. You normally associate defensive midfielders with the physical traits of a destroyer with having the turning circle of a bus, but this statement is emphatically put down by Amadou Diawara. His technique is perhaps the most magnificent weapon in his armoury. He is nimble, remarkably quick on the turn and is proficient at beating his man with his dribbling. This skill often allows him to beat the opposition press with ease, as he weaves in and out of players to further progress the play. Don’t believe me? Again, I’ll point you in the direction of his masterclass at the Santiago Bernabeu in February. With his abundance of technical ability, it’s easy to see why Sarri believes Diawara to be of the perfect profile to feature regularly in Napoli’s renowned midfield in the coming seasons.

Maybe not this summer, but Lenglet, Sevilla's left footed centre half, looks a good player and potentially a future Jan successor.

I did moot him as worth thinking about a couple of pages ago.

The thing we have to worry about is not just City, but Chelsea, Arsenal and possibly ManU might be in the market for quality CM's this summer.

I'd kill for Bailey. I think he's every bit as talented as Sane. Unfortunately he's going to be way out of our price range. Leverkusen already said they are using the Dembele transfer as a gauge for how much money they are looking for.

Every other player on that list is doable though. I especially like De Jong.

As some of the ITK have said we are going to have to make a statement signing this summer to please the sponsors. My gut says it will be Bale.

Do you really see them as competition for players ? Not being Billy Big Time but they are a club in crisis and even if Wenger goes I don’t think that changes in the next window.

We need both. A better footballing 6 than Dier and a more creative 8 than Dembele. I accept the 8 is more of a priority because we have Wanyama, who's already a better 6 than Dier, but I'd still like both because Dier's not a Cm and Dembele's for the glue factory soon.

Absolutely, they are. They still pay bigger fees and wages than we do. They are still a club with a "profile". It's not much of a crisis is it? They are still one of the richest and most famous clubs in Europe. And the slate gets wiped every summer. Wenger or not, "crisis" or not, if they are prepared to pay bigger fees and wages than we are, then I doubt any player is going to say "no, I'd rather play for Spurs for 50% or look at us as a much more viable chance of footballing success.

Agree completely. I see Dier's future with us as a CB not a DM. If we lose Toby, I'd like to see him compete with Sanchez for Toby's role.

I've been on the Diawara and De Jong train for a while now. Diawara is sort of a mix between Wanyama and Dembele. He can play either role effectively. De Jong is sort of a mix between Dembele and Eriksen. Both suit us perfectly.
