"Brought them into line" in this context means "brought them under his control".

He didn't return their riches to the Russian people, he didn't break up the criminal gangs. he didn't stop the stealing and corruption. He merely demanded his cut. He made himself the Capo dei Cappi.

The average wage in russia is 4 times as much as it was in 2008 (almost 10 times as much as in 2000). Yes he is a bastard but life for the average russian is much better than it was before he took charge. Our great leaders were going to arm isis against syria.
He is a bastard and has an iron grip on the country. But he is better for the russians than what they had before.

That’s a bit like saying Hitler made the trains run on time. Sure the average Russian may have seen a raise in living standards, that doesn’t mean he isn’t a crook, and it doesn’t mean Abramovich isn’t very closely tied to one of the worlds most danderous and brutal dictators.

Another excellent article in the Times from Matthew Syed today absolutely slams Abramovich and the hypocrisy and corruption behind it all.

Think it’s behind a paywall but read it if you can

The fit and proper person test came into football after he bought Chelsea so I'm not really sure what the point is here. Everyone knows he's dodgy, but he couldn't fail a test that didn't exist at that time.
Has the 'fit and proper person' test/protocol ever been used? That's a genuine question, because I've never heard of it being used, let alone a prospective owner being knocked back for any reason.

I won't post links, but this article can be found with a Google search for the author, today anyway. It's a good piece and I urge people to read it.

As for the fit & proper persons test, the idea that it's only adjudicated once and never revisited makes no sense. If Levy shot someone in broad daylight tomorrow, does he remain a fit & proper person just because some PL panel said he was 15 years ago? Of course not.

Above all though, we to lose the naivety about how people like Abramovich got, and stay, so wealthy. He is in the good graces of a murderous dictator who assassinates rivals and journalists, has crushed non-state media, invades sovereign nations, interferes in other countries' elections, has enriched himself to the tune of billions - yes, billions - and enables gangsterism, oligarchy and kleptocracy in his country. No, fuck these people.

An fwiw, I'm not a Tory or right winger.

Oh you have to read the comments on the 101greatgoals article on the Syed article.

A load of African Chelsea fans (no i'm not being racist) almost in tears because a bad journo is picking on poor little Roman and his toy club.

On a recent BBC doc, they estimated Putin's personal wealth at close to £20b, he's one of the richest men in the world now, he's been taking £100m-200m backhanders for a hell of a long time.

so Chelsea should be pleased with how they’ve gone about the 2 games and how they are going out - 4-1. Yet we bottled it??

No Abramovich=No champions league, watch Chelsea's support sink like a stone. They will be back to equal footing with West Ham.
Yep, they'll all be Man City fans before long.
I hope something comes of this Russia thing although I doubt it will tbh.
