The defender does sweep his leg to try to catch the attacker, so the intent is there.
I think he makes contact too.
It is 99% a dive, but that defender is not in a position to say anything.

This is where VAR would prove conclusive in terms of a "clear error".
I'm guessing the referee's angle of the incident was such as to look like the defender's kick had caught him.
Either that or, as is more likely, he's corrupt as fuck.

It's 100% a dive, but it's also 100% a penalty

- A penalty kick is awarded if a player commits a direct free kick offence inside their penalty area or off the field as part of play as outlined in Laws 12 and 13....

- Direct free kick

A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
  • charges
  • jumps at
  • kicks or attempts to kick
  • pushes
  • strikes or attempts to strike (including head-butt)
  • tackles or challenges
  • trips or attempts to trip
If an offence involves contact it is penalised by a direct free kick or penalty kick.

  • Careless is when a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution. No disciplinary sanction is needed
  • Reckless is when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent and must be cautioned
  • Using excessive force is when a player exceeds the necessary use of force and endangers the safety of an opponent and must be sent off

The defender has been careless in this situation, even though no contact was made

Clear dive, clear penalty :)

He was just "anticipating the contact" or whatever Sky try to call it when it's a Liverpool or England player.

Don’t be ludicrous. It was a dive and never a penalty in a million years ffs.

Not the worst dive I’ve seen, Welbeck’s against Milan was worse.

Further to the above...

It's not even a yellow card offence:

CAUTIONABLE OFFENCES

A player is cautioned if guilty of:
  • delaying the restart of play
  • dissent by word or action
  • entering, re-entering or deliberately leaving the field of play without the referee’s permission
  • failing to respect the required distance when play is restarted with a corner kick, free kick or throw-in
  • persistent offences (no specific number or pattern of offences constitutes “persistent”)
  • unsporting behaviour
CAUTIONS FOR UNSPORTING BEHAVIOUR

There are different circumstances when a player must be cautioned for unsporting behaviour including if a player:
  • attempts to deceive the referee e.g. by feigning injury or pretending to have been fouled (simulation)
  • changes places with the goalkeeper during play or without the referee’s permission
  • commits in a reckless manner a direct free kick offence
  • commits a foul or handles the ball to interfere with or stop a promising attack
  • commits a foul which interferes with or stops a promising attack except where the referee awards a penalty kick for an offence which was an attempt to play the ball
  • denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by an offence which was an attempt to play the ball and the referee awards a penalty kick
  • handles the ball in an attempt to score a goal (whether or not the attempt is successful) or in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent a goal
  • makes unauthorised marks on the field of play
  • plays the ball when leaving the field of play after being given permission to leave
  • shows a lack of respect for the game
  • uses a deliberate trick to pass the ball (including from a free kick) to the goalkeeper with the head, chest, knee etc. to circumvent the Law, whether or not the goalkeeper touches the ball with the hands
  • verbally distracts an opponent during play or at a restart
http://www.thefa.com/football-rules.../football-11-11/law-12---fouls-and-misconduct

The attacking player has actually been fouled as stated by the rules of the game, so he hasn't 'simulated' being fouled

So this whole episode is completely above board and I'm disappointed that my client...er...I mean the player in question has had his good name dragged through the court of public opinion.

Spuriffic - I think you owe the player an apology :cautious:
