The main thing that hacks me off is that that's two years in a row now that players have thrown their toys out the pram, to whatever extent, at the point we were still well in the running for silverware.

Okay, Toby hasn't been as petulant as Walker or Rose and it's all being blamed on his agent but it's pretty clear that mischief is largely being kept well out of the public eye at the mo.

Undoubtedly if Toby leaves he'll repeat Walker's motto of 'it wasn't for the money, I just wanted to win things etc' and yet both of them have been in a position to do so here before undermining the season, whether overtly or covertly.

As it is, I bloody hope Toby signs or at least does the decent thing and goes abroad if he does go. Fingers crossed.

End of rant...

Another failure the club will try and dress up as a success. At the same time players rarely stay forever unless they are getting paid above market and consistently winning trophies.

To me it seems clear that he is as good as gone and there's no turning back now.

What failure? And what I’m the world do you mean when you claim that the club would try to “dress it up as a success?” That doesn’t make any sense at all.

Although I have been critical of the club in all this if we sell him it's just greedy for Toby to be demanding what VVD is.

Van Dijk has clearly proven to be an exception, not the norm at this time.

The club always has one eye on the future, hence the signing of Sanchez. The guy’s played pretty much all season and we’re still extremely solid defensively.
With this season under his belt he’s likely to be even stronger next year.

This will influence Poch’s decision. Yes he’d love to keep Toby but if the priority is paying the likes of Lloris, Eriksen, Kane more money & strengthening the squad, he may feel an agitating Toby is expendable.

I just can’t see us “doing a United” and paying whatever is demanded by the player (see Sanchez, Alexis). We have a plan guys and whilst some may feel we should concentrate more on the present, it’s unlikely to happen.

I don't have much of a problem with the club standing their ground on this, but given that we would need to replace him to some extent, and Sanchez cost us c.£40m, then I'm not sure the financials really add up on this. I know we can't break the wage structure for him as many others will then want parity, but depending on what the new demands are, isn't there an argument that the club are cutting off their nose to the spite face on this one?

My biggest concern is that the club have decided they're willing to lose Toby without identifying a viable replacement (whether that's a first team replacement or back-up to Sanchez/Vertonghen), and when they do identify their target, they find out that its going to cost almost as much to replace Alderweireld with an inferior player as it would have done to keep him.

Shows if that were needed just how stupid Liverpool were in 1) Paying 75 million pounds 2) Paying him supposedly 175k per week when he isn’t one of the standout central defenders in the PL. Now this is going to affect every other PL club with demands for ridiculous increase in wages from their defenders.

Any reliable figures for what the top earning CBs are, and how much they're getting paid. Have a feeling that £110k is a pretty fair wage.

Not sure on all but Laporte just signed for City on 120k which I think is top end for a CB

Media on point about Toby. He wants to stay, but on his terms. That won’t happen! If he stays, it is on our terms! We are willing to let him go for figures being mentioned. Let’s see where this one ends up. I personally believe he is another KW situation. Don’t worry if so, as very good irons in the fire-no joke. Please

I'm interested to see so many of us saying only let him go abroad which made perfect sense a few years ago however, we have got to come to terms with the fact that those "abroad" teams are now also our competitors.

Would have been worried over this if this was the situation last year. However after Sanchez' season and Foyth being a good understudy, I'm not as bothered about him going. So long as we get a decent fee for him, and he doesn't go to a domestic rival, I'll see that as being a reasonable deal for us

Is there an element of ITK here? Or am I reading too much of into this?

he won't suddenly wake up and think "i should accept the offer from spurs instead of insisting getting the same as vvd", so that's the end for him at spurs imo

Out term and his term - can't we find any middle point?

it's clubs like Liverpool, paying over the odds on players that is killing football for the rest of us. Toby is a great defender but the time has come when we sell, we don't have the endorsement income that others have.

Folk tend to let the Mickeys off the hook a bit in the financial doping stakes 'cos they aren't City/Chelsea. I posted recently a good article showing how J Henry had mini-doped them subtly - just can't remember where. On top of which, and this is the bit that really goes past some, they pay heavily disproportionate wages in relation to their revenues. So, in relation to us, they currently have higher revenues and they pay a higher percentage of those revenues in wages*. I would love for Chelsea to miss out on CL...but I would also really love the Mickeys to, because I strongly suspect all of this is them rolling the dice a bit.

*We pay approximately the percentage of revenues in wages that UEFA recommends for a healthily run club. Liverpool pay considerably more than that percentage.
