Even though we're getting closer and closer to Day Zero in this stand-off, I'm still less nervous about it than I was last August. I'm impressed with how Sanchez has stepped up this season in Toby's absence, and I like Foyth as well. Toby would be a huge loss regardless (as anyone with his talent would be), but his agents lose leverage with Spurs with every good game Sanchez plays from here to the end of the season.

What failure? And what I’m the world do you mean when you claim that the club would try to “dress it up as a success?” That doesn’t make any sense at all.

Failure to keep our best players dressed up as successfully getting rid of trouble makers/greedy players.

The reality as we all know is that another of our first team starters is being sold to a domestic rival because we have failed to keep them happy.

Its so easy to blame the Agent when all he was doing was his job. The Agent answers to Toby's wants, not the other way around. Toby is demanding a release clause, the Agent is only voicing this. If Toby was in agreement with the original offer he would have signed and there would be nothing the Agent could do. However the Agent more than likely did recommend or advise Toby to go for the release clause but at the end its Toby's choice.

Exactly, the agent is just doing the barking, Toby is the one holding the leash.

You must live in a weird world where not being held to ransom is somehow seen as a failure.
And where are you getting he's going to a domestic rival from lol ?

Personally i think we need to keep him at least one more season, his one of our best defenders, loosing walker made our right side weaker, loosing Toby will leave us with only Jan as our exp defender if we want to challenge we need to keep him another season. If Jan got injured we would struggle.

Question of losing £25M in the process, that's the problem

I've seen Hercules throw out Jonathan Tah as a replacement and I think I could live with Toby going if Tah is the replacement but he threw out a 35m figure and I just don't see how that's feasible as he just renewed his contract in February to 2023.

We can't financially compete with the doped clubs. Most have the intelligence to see that.

Which is one of the benefits of having a manager like Poch.

We all agree that it would be a tad disappointing losing TB (the level of disappointment differs from fan to fan). But there are certain constants with Poch and how he likes to build his squad. Firstly, he likes to work with young players and mould them into the players he wants*. TB improved our defence, but he wasn't a Poch moulded youngling - chances are that within a couple of years Dier, Sanchez, Foyth would be moulded enough to form the backbone of our central defence anyway. In which case Toby may well be expendable. He also absolutely insists that his players are fully committed. I don't believe it is hyperbole that if a player didn't have that or once he loses it Poch really just doesn't want him. ITK, above, says Toby wants to stay - I think he has to show Poch that, whereas he seems more concerned with having an escape route, hedging his bets in case we don't fly in the new stadium.

There's also the reality that once money gets moved to the top of the equation we really are put on the back foot because we really just can't offer the wages that City, Chelsea, United, ArseAnal and Liverpool offer - even if we will be able to get onto the ball park with the new stadium, etc. If TB really does want more than we can pay, we would be best served making as many upsides to that undeniable downside.

My feeling is that Poch is right - he will be a loss, but not one we can't get over, and we are still in the position where a nice lump sum (which is all profit, after all) will still come in handy to invest in some of the best young talent around. If we got someone like de Ligt to add to Dier, Sanchez, Foyth and CCV (maybies), under Vertonghen's leadership, and with some change to invest elsewhere, we'll be as good as soon enough. I agree with the consensus, though, overseas and not to a rival, please. Alternatively, if he really wants to stay, let him show it by fully committing rather than half committing - which is what demanding a sell-out clause, that will disadvantage the club, is doing!

*For purposes of comparison, it is interesting to note that Ferguson's first United team was almost completely build via the transfer market, but once the younglings he had moulded had come of age, a lot of that first Fergie-United team were sold.

Love Toby but I'm not sure he'd be a massive loss looking at other options in the squad including forgotten man CCV.

Toby was magnificent for us, let's not talk his influence on our last 2 season down...

Did we cope without him this year yes
Did Sanchez well in his absence yes
Should we go full mental when Toby leaves no

But imo the toughest pill to swallow would be, that we had a cb pairing which was second to none in terms of understanding (an important part in this position for sure) Him and Jan were like brothers, they seemed comfortable alongside each other.
So that would be a huge loss...

Sanchez did well and i think there's a raw talent in Foyth waiting to be unleashed by Poch - so i think we can cope, even tough i would like to get another CB in if Toby leaves...

I agree with this.

It's galling that we had the best back four in the Prem - whodda thought we could ever say that - but by the end of the summer we could have lost three of them.

I guess it is just indicative of the fact that no matter how edifying it is to build up to challenge organically, we still aren't quite there and there are some unavoidable pot-holes on the journey.

However you dress it up losing Toby weakens us

Walker weakened us and Toby will weaken us further
No doubt losing Toby is a blow, but he's been gone four months now, and we've done pretty well in that time. Who knows how fit he is or will be, he's had two pretty big injuries in two years now. It is OK to try and think about it in a level way.

Thanks

What I meant to say was that Toby hasnt been as absolutely amazing as he was 2 years ago and might never recapture that form. He might even never be fully fit again

Lets cash in and sell him to the highest bidder, maybe the scum could use him. They will have a big clear out in the Summer

Goodbye. Fuck off. We can easily cope without him. Hopefully we’ll buy a top young CB again who has the potential to be even better.

It’s all ifs and buts with regard to how well we would have done if we had kept Walker, Rose hadn’t got injured and if Toby was fit and committed. We’ve done exceedingly well in the champions league, in an FA cup semi final and still in the running for a top 2-4 finish. Barring being a country mile behind City (along with everyone else) we’ve actually surpassed last seasons achievements this season. Taking all that into account it’s hard to argue that we’ve suffered as a result of losing the 3 aforementioned players. The problem now surrounding Toby is even if we do keep him for the remainder of his contract, is how committed will he be? More likely on Rose level than Kane... ambling about with a fat lip. We’ve a strong and promising quartet in Verts, Sanchez, Dier and Foyth... if Toby goes we replace him, simple as that, onwards and upwards. The only small question is whether we go for an experienced player or another talented youngster.
