Wow - didn't realize it 38 games missed in 2 seasons + you want a get out clause....sounds like the agent wants him on a big salary for next season with us, if he has a big year, he gets a monied team to come in and buy him out.
Would be mugs to agree to that. Might as well just keep the status quo, keep him on a lower salary for the next year and a bit and then sell for 25 million.
i think levy & poch would prefer selling him for a big fee this summer and re-invest (de ligt, de jong?)

De Jong would be a Dier-kind of player he could fill in a lot of positions quite easily

Agree on De Ligt still raw but loads potential of course

Keep him and sell him for the £25 million next summer. We’d lose him for free the following year anyway and we aren’t going to buy another centre back as good as him for the price or wages in that time.

I guess if his heart isn’t in it then he’s got to go.

I guess Poch don't want players that are not 100% committed, so there is either a new contract signed or the exit door imo

Really encouraged by what I’m what reading from our fan base here - he’s disinterested and injured (dare I say injury prone?), we have Sanchez and Dier who can (and have) step in NOW, Foyth for the future (possibly even next season?), we need to be pragmatic on Toby

We probably need another young CB (De Ligt maybe, but who knows) for the long term but I think we’re relatively well suited for now.

We will lose players for money and maybe trophies, that’s the reality of any team outside of the Real, Barca, Bayern, City(possibly a few others), but as long as there’s no contagion then I think it’s just an occupational hazard for an upwardly mobile team with top class players.

You could say something similar(ish) for Rose.

The important thing is replacing them, and ironically, if Dier moves back to CB, DM suddenly looks a little light

Players come and go, in recent times we lost Berbatov, Carrick, Modric, Bale all top class players but look where we are now. Who we sell isn't the biggest issue, its who we buy to replace them. I have loads of time for Toby but if we get a good price and use it wisely there's no problem.

Id prefer him to stay but if he wants to go or if Poch dosnt want him to then thats the way it is. As im getting older thats the way im tending to think about these things BUT the one thing i would hate us to do the one thing that would drive me mad is to sell him to Man U, The Rent boys or Liverpool i dont really care if he goes to Man City as their not a real team and dont count anyway.

While it would be a loss, I am not worried if it happens tbh.

Davidson Sanchez is one of the best CB's I have seen for a 21 year old, and is certainly up there with Campbell and King at the same age.

Yes TA and JV have a brilliant understanding, but they have known each other and played together for a very long time. Sanchez has had one season with Jan and they already look very good together. The more they play as a pair the better they will get.

I'm a big fan of having a settled CB pairing so don't want them rotating in the Prem or CL, which is whart I think will happen if Toby stays. As good as Davinson is, he needs to be playing every week with a regular partner, because he's not going to really progress unless he does.

I will be sad to see him go, but all the signs still point to that being the case ATM.

Has anyone else noticed despite the meltdown surrounding Walkers departure, he never gets mentioned in posts like this?

There is a reason for that and I suspect(should he leave) in a few years time Toby will be exactly the same.

However you dress it up losing Toby weakens us

Walker weakened us and Toby will weaken us further
Yet we haven't been beaten in the league since December and only juventus have beaten us since. Which shows we certainly can cope without him. It's a loss for certain and I'd much rather he stayed. But I'm not as worried as I was when we lost the likes of Modric and Bale.

Secondly, I don't think Toby had been close to his best last year. He had made quite a few errors which he didn't at all in his first season.

While I'm in the more positive spin group. I don't agree on the age point. Vertonghen has gone up a level since hitting 30.

As for the £110k a week on the table, I've looked around and seems the next best paid CBs after VVD are Kompany, Otamendi and Luiz on 120k (this may have changed with Otamendi new deal). I'd rather us leave a comparable offer of £120-130k on the table rather than a good but possibly dated offer.

What I don't get is if Van Dijk was so desperate to join Liverpool why they had to offer 50% more than the highest wage in the league for that position. Ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure we'll go for a young player in any case.

Oh yeah absolutely - that's our M.O.
Not sure De Ligt is the answer right now though. Great potential but...
Sanchez and Foyth (young), Vertonghen (experienced). Dier in the middle. Should Toby go I reckon we'll need someone else with a touch of experience to balance it out. Not necessarily an 'old' player, but someone who isn't quite so raw as De Ligt.
