From January 29 2017::

Pompey have signed midfielder Anton Walkes in a loan deal from Tottenham until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old – who is also comfortable playing at the back – played for Major League Soccer side Atlanta United during the 2017 campaign.

Blues boss Kenny Jackett said: “He can play in midfield, the centre of defence or at right-back and he’s an athletic player, so we’re pleased to add him for the rest of the season.

"He’s someone I have a lot of time for and think he’s got a very bright future."

“The experience of coming to a club like Pompey will be a good one for him and he’ll be keen to help us move towards the top six.

“He’s someone I have a lot of time for and think he’s got a very bright future. He’s certainly got all the tools to succeed.”

Walkes is a graduate of Tottenham’s academy, who made his senior debut from the bench in a League Cup victory over Gillingham in September 2016.

Sounds like a very useful versatile utility player
who has done well on loan.
Still under contract and only 21.
Too soon to give up on him?

I don’t think so. Versatile, but not exceptional in a particular position and was played here there and everywhere in the youth team. Don’t think he would have progressed with us and Pompey is a good club to move to, so hope it works out really well for him.

They can’t all become stars with us, good to see the youth players can get solid moves into the professional ranks. I remember a time when they just about got conference moves

If Walkes finds a preferred position at Pompey or another lower league side he might well do an Adam Smith / Charlie Daniels and work his way back into the PL. But he'll never get that chance to develop with us. A move would be the best for him I think.

Harry Kane was in exactly the same position
to many people for quite a few years.
Fortunately he's not banging them in against us now
Danny Rose is another write off
playing for England
and us.

Portsmouth forum claim it was a Miami boat related accident. Very sad, he came off as a good guy and his club's statement say he'd become a father as well.

What horrible news and so young, too. First Jay Briscoe a couple days ago and now this. Awful week.

Wow absolutely awful, just came across this on BBCs football page. He looked really good when on loan at Atlanta, such a shock.

It's just been announced that our former youth team player Anton Walkes has died in a boat accident. Only 25, poor kid.

I remember him getting a run out in a few high-profile pre-season games a few years back and he looked like a real prospect - he'd gone on to have a good career as well, first at Portsmouth and then out in MLS for Atlanta and Charlotte. Terrible news.

Was always a great professional and understood his role and happy to play, He literally played every in the back 4 and DM and just got on with his role

Shit I have vague memories of him playing a no. 10 role for Pompey or our youth team and giving his typical solid performance

Heartbreaking for the lads especially after last few months
