There are many reasons why we're third at the moment.

The manager, the team spirit, Hugo's keeping, Son's form, Sissoko's resurgence, Jimmy Hill...

Jimmy Hill, I hear you say? He of the inordinately large chin and progenitor of playground taunts in the face of dubious claims?

Yes, Jimmy Hill.

Back in 1981, Jimmy successfully campaigned for three points for a win, claiming that this would create more exciting football. It's arguable whether it succeeded in this regard, but what it did do was favour those teams who won more games rather than lost fewer.

Which, this season, is us.

Had we retained the old two points for a win system, we'd currently be fifth, behind Chelsea and Arsenal on goal difference.

So well done Jimmy. I'm sorry for ever doubting you.

We have 3 home games in hand over Arsenal and Chelsea 2 over city and 1 over Liverpool.

City have played 4 of their away games v the other top 5, Liverpool have played 3 of the other top 5. The only way what you think is any advantage would be if we repaid City, Liverpool and do the double over Chelsea.

I honestly don’t think home advantage means anything unless it’s against those teams. It’s very tight and is great we are not drawing games, though I wished we had 4 draws on top of our 12 wins.

I think we've just found out who Jay Leno's real dad is.

When is Son off to the Asian cup and how many games is he going to miss ?

To answer myself I think we did a deal that he’s just going for the knockout phase so that’s 20th- 1st.

Fulham a
Watford h
Newcastle h

I thought we did a deal which meant he was'nt going at all!? Pretty sure that was the case because of the summers tournament.

Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-Min will miss South Korea's first two games at the 2019 Asian Cup. AFP
Son Heung-min will miss South Korea's first two matches at the Asian Cup in January in the UAE under a compromise agreed with Tottenham Hotspur to release him for this month's Asian Games, the Korea Football Association (KFA) said Wednesday.
The South Korean striker will fly to Indonesia for the Asian Games - where a gold medal is likely to win him exemption from military service - after Tottenham's Premier League season opener against Newcastle United on August 11, a KFA spokesman said.
Spurs had initially sought to keep Son back until August 18, when they have a Premier League match against Fulham.
That would have effectively kept the 26-year-old out of the group stage for Asia's mini-Olympics, where the football tournament runs from August 14 to September 2.

Be interesting to see in how many previous seasons our current points total would see us at the top of the table? The pace that has been set this season is like no other I can remember.
Only 3 times since at least as far back as 2004 funny enough, but most of the other years 1 team is miles out in front

Any reason why they dont move the Asian tournament to the summer? They recently moved the AFCON to the summer to not mess up the players seasons.

Imagine Liverpool losing Salah and Mane for a month

No idea but in some ways I’d rather our situation. At most he misses x3 games and shouldn’t effect his fitness. Salah and mane will have another major tournament next summer which isn’t gonna do their 19/20 season many favours.

Regarding the points totals mentioned.....you would have to fancy 4th place to have a ridiculously high total this season. You would think that both us and chelsea will mantain a similar pace to what we have so far which will see us to around the 78-86pts mark. Quite remarkable for a top4 place, title winning pace usually.

Liverpool's next 5 league games:

Man United - home
Wolves - away
Newcastle - home
Arsenal - home
City - away

That's a pretty tough festive period. Would be very surprised if they didn't drop 4/5 points there.

We take care of our business we could be right on their coat tails going into the new year.

but as I've posted before if we can catch and stay in front, we will then need to win or draw away to Liverpool, City and Chelsea also beat Arse and Man U at home. All 6 pointers except the Man U fixture at the moment.
