Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur will be taking up the option on Toby Alderweireld's contract but that has left many fans unclear on exactly what that means.

Doesn`t really explain anything for me-but maybe that`s only me

It explains why we are triggering the extension now, as otherwise he could start negotiating with non-prem clubs this Jan for a summer move (for free).
That's what I got out of it.

25m or more would seem to imply that there could be a bidding war in the summer. I can see this happening if a couple of big clubs are after him. I really don't understand why he's cost himself 80k per week for all of this time though, especially since he seems settled and happy. He'll need a massive deal from a new club to make up that sort of shortfall.

If he runs his contract out, he can go for a free and get a massive signing on fee and wage for what may very likely be the last big contract of his career.

It makes perfect sense tbh.

If the contract says he can leave for £25m there won't be a bidding war.
All interested parties will only have to meet that clause to begin negotiations with him. It'll then be up to him who he goes to.

Agree, It's basically down to who offers him the best deal in wages/signing on fee etc.

To be honest, I'm not so sure he will leave. As has been stated elsewhere, he seems settled/happy. If we can reach a compromise on his salary, he may prefer to stay.

How much is he worth this summer? Surely at least £40m? Next summer? Deffo more than £15m?

Either way assume he can pocket AT LEAST a £15m signing on fee, probably more likely to be £25m and therein lies the reason he didn’t sign, whatever happens now we need to offer more Ps or forget it.

This summer if he gets somewhere in the order of a £15m and a £200k/week salary he’s off. If next summer he could get £25m and £200k and still be better off but he runs the risk of injury etc. stakes are too big for him plus he’s probably itching for some extra cash to spunk on a new house or something... I think he will go somewhere this summer unfortunately.

They'll still have to pay us £25m this summer. So that would be £40m and £200k a week for a 30 year old defender? There are 2 defenders in the world who earn £200k a week. Marcelo and ramos.

I can see someone paying £40m, maybe the £200k p/w is a bit high but I doubt it will be far off? The problem is someone will pay it

In reality we’ll be ‘gaining’ closer to £35m for a 30 year old CB as him not signing 130k a week plus signing bonus 12/18 months ago has saved us close to that.

Just trying to put a bit more of a positive shade on it as it will be a shame to lose him

It will be a shame that middle ground can’t be found. He’s gonna listen to his advice and that is gonna be telling him he can get serious money elsewhere.

I personally think budgeting an extra £30/40m retaining him and Eriksen would repay itself. They’re 2 players we obviously can’t replace spending 100/150m

I wish he'd sign a new contract and someone would explain that. Sadly I fear he's off, let's remember the great player he's been for us and wish him well. I'll also hope we get 5 Dele Allis with the transfer fee but that's probably pushing it.
