Same shit every window?

Granted last window sucked but the previous window saw us sign Lucas, who has contributed heavily to our thus far excellent season.

The window before that saw us sign Sanchez and Foyth, thank fuck we have both of them given the injuries and contract situations surrounding the Belgians.

The January before that was blank, but the summer before that saw Wanyama (who proceeded to have a sensation season) and Sissoko (who is currently having a sensational season) arrive.

The summer before that saw Alderweireld, Trippier, Son and Wimmer arrive. The former three are still currently in our best xi, the fourth was pivotal in us finishing 3rd and qualifying for the champions league for the first time since 2010.

The January before that? Dele Alli, who made immediate impact and is one of our most important players still. The summer before that? Ben Davies and Eric Dier, the former finishing last season as the league’s top assisting defender, the latter making an immediate impact and to this day remaining a first choice player via a multitude of international caps.

Same old shit every window? We’ve had one bad summer, and other than that have been very successful throughout Pochettino’s tenure, with no fewer than 12 players across 8 windows before last summer who have made significant contributions to our magnificent improvement as a club,

Absolutely brilliant post.

Nobody linked to the club wanted to see us sign nobody last summer but there's no changing the past, we need to let go of that now and recognise that it hasn't actually held us back this season. We're still performing above all our expectations. Not even the most optimistic of Spurs fans would have expected us to be in 3rd, 2 points off 2nd and 6 points off 1st with 21 games played.

January is a notoriously difficult time to sign anyone so again, our expectations should be that we'll sign nobody. If we go another summer with no new players in then it will absolutely be cause for major concern but right now we need to have a little perspective as @BringBack_leGin has kindly provided above.

Sigh

It looks like I'm going to have to start modding again. Still, every cloud and all that.

I have to say I'm really hoping for some news on outgoing fringe players soon. Hopefully our trusted ITK can provide something on that front. We have a packed squad so I can't see any incomings until we shift someone out. Tonight could prove a bit of a shop window opportunity.

You can't gamble on a player, have that gamble fail and still expect to recoup the majority of a transfer fee. It's pretty simple.

How long has this deadwood been in the squad now? 4 windows? 5?

People mention Dortmund and other European sides as examples, when they don't have the same squad imbalances we have so can take more gambles on players that we miss out on and will continue to miss out on until we can shift the deadwood in the squad.

It's depressing seeing the same shit every window from the club a lot more than from the fucking fans tbh.

I get the feeling we could win the league and you'd still be bitching about transfer dealings like you've been short-changed...

I prefer the ban hammer. Now if only I could remember how to use it.

In transfer related stuff will the baldy headed one finally dust of the cheque book spend some money on players? I doubt it myself.

Didn't we buy Aurier in Jan 17 window????

This. This is a concern.

Don't be so naive to think we couldn't have done more to get these ideal targets over the line. We offered our terms, and they rejected us. Tough reading and a concern moving forward. These are legitimate players to improve our starting eleven, and they turned our project down. A concern
So would you say you're concerned? I'm concerned about you, this is a concern, concern, could you alleviate my concern please?

Concern.

It's really not that concerning, happened for years and will continue to do so, we've gotten by so far, just means we miss out on the mercenaries.

Agree with this and I think our past few transfer windows show that if the right player at the right price is available we will go for it, we’ve signed some absolute astute signings and some gems/bargains over the last 5 or so years :
Lloris
Toby
Davies
Trippier
Aurier
Sanchez
Eriksen
Dier
Alli
Son
Moura

I may have missed a few but we do have a track record of making signings where possible. I think the recent ITK shows this but that as we know and as Poch said we have so sell a good 3-5 players before we can add to the squad, simple as that.

If we can oust the 3-4 dead wood this jan and bring in mabye CM cover then kick on with 2 big signings in summer mabye a RB and AM and or CB if Toby goes then we will be in a really really good place.

Also interesting to know if we have offers lined up for a few of these and if for example Pulisic had said yes to us were we ready to pull the trigger and cut our losses on some of the others, but because our top targets were unattainable Poch/Levy agreed it made more sense to just stick with what we have got?

None of the ITK we have had suggests we are in the market for anyone to come in and make an impact this season though. Even the whispers have been of younger players perhaps even staying on loan at their clubs for the time being.
The squad is looking good to me when they are not six or seven first team players out.
I don’t believe there has been any true ITK on Dembele leaving and surely that is a good thing considering that himself, Dier and maybe Wanyama can help the current midfielders who have been worked hard over the last five or six weeks.

Interesting stuff from the ITKs. I am not worried if some players are turning us down, and also I'd rather not sign a GKN type player who we then can't shift. However, it would be nice to shift the real dead wood, and if we cannot sign any first XI type players, would be great to look at some young British talent - either internally or down the leagues.

Can't want us to give academy players a chance AND want us to sign players all the time. If we cannot get players for the now and tomorrow, then lets create them and that can be our USP

We haven't sold any deadwood in a few windows. It's honestly concerning at this point, as Poch has reiterated that we must sell to buy. I really think we need to show some humility and let a few of these players go at a severe discount, as other clubs do.

Believe it or not, a few of them will be earning a lot more with us than they could get elsewhere so there will be little impetus to leave.

Poch wants talented starters, not stocking fillers aka mercenaries. The recent ITK suggests his targets turned us down. Hence my reaction of concern. Poch wants us to push on in the market. Without the financial support, we'll struggle to attract the top quality that we need.

Pulisic we met with him and we didn't complete a deal due to a better deal from Chelsea, which we suspected was already complete so we felt being used by his agent and were right in our assumption. He had his worth.
These transfers are never as straightforward as they appear and i respect all of your positions at your work or study but we are looking at a 100 million pound investment when you include the wages and transfer fee. Its a very big commitment and financial responsibility that CP isn't worth.
De Jong is worth it but he turned us down.

Thanks JJ, really appreciate you passing on your info.

Thoroughly depressing news regarding De Jong as far as I’m concerned.

That is why I said “There is variables and challenges ahead”. Why I shared how the agent world has become in essence what it is. And again why I said the challenge to join the big 4 is going to basically challenge our principles if we want to acquire our chosen players. And again made mention that ‘our preferred targets, we are not their preferred choices’.
