I never allowed myself to think it was a possibility. It sounds like it was a hell of a lot closer than I ever thought, but at no point did I ever think it would actually happen.

It’s certainly not all negative. The fact that this was even a possibility shows how far we have come as a club. Ndombele was already a huge statement and a genuine marquee signing. Sessegnon is too, in my opinion, considering he was a major hot property.

It’s clear that Levy and the club are moving on to the next phase. We’ve signed three key targets for Pochettino, and one prospect for the future. Dybala coming closer to joining us than United is something that won’t have gone unnoticed across the footballing world.

If he doesn't move this window (which seems like a pretty big if), you've got to believe we will go right back for him in January. A lot of the legwork will have been done, but I think the problem may still be insurmountable if the image rights issue was that big of a hurdle.

Have we ever gone back in for someone the following transfer window? Genuine question.

Barkley last year springs to mind, we all thought after he rejected Chelsea on deadline day that we would go in for him in January, never happened and he went to Chelsea!

Not really knowing how far we were in any potential deal, Ndombele and Sessegnon are players we had been linked with in previous windows.

IMO as long as the court case from the other company that found him in breach is still ongoing, any deal would be very hard to do and possibly very expensive, there is a reason Juve are willing to accept less than £70M. For Tottenham to be sure we would have to pay both off, probably £20-30M pounds extra with an iron clad agreement that there is no comeback.

We've got our house in order regarding targets now imo. We haven't signed anyone for the sake of it recently and our signings seem to be long term and smart. Whilst we also seem a lot more persistent with them.

If hes still kicking about, I think we would try again.

one thing about all this that has left me puzzled is his wages, so allegedly he was on 350 a week and we were only paying 200 and Juve paying 150 a week

so what happens after that ? I could never see us paying him 350 a week

I don't think that 350k was correct

Not sure if this is possible or has already been mentioned, but wouldn't it be brilliant if ENIC (or one of Joe's offshore companies) went along and purchased Dybala's image rights... So, even if we can't sign him now, we'll still have a 'part' of him, with a view to signing properly in Jan. There's probably a million reasons why we can't, but a quirky/funny thought nonetheless.

Haha I remember the explanation for us not going in for him in that January was because Poch thought there were better players out there that we could sign in the summer. We all know what happened next.

Also the summer before we signed Lucas, SSN reported on deadline day that we had tried to sign him, so I guess the answer to your question is Yes?

Possibly but a lot of things could change and take it away from us.

Seems like it was right on the cusp of our financial capabilities and we were getting a fair bit of help from Juve. I get the impression it was all about timing and it's just going to go down as an incredible opportunity that just didn't quite come off.

I certainly can see Levy pulling something major off in future going forward though. Just getting that close for Dybala shows how we've grown as a club.

I did mention on Tuesday in the discussion thread this deal was near impossible to do due to his image rights as had been mentioned in ‘the totally football European pod’. Sadly for us/me this was proven right.

That independent article says we were working on it for 3 weeks & even that was not enough. The ship has sailed for him now, we won’t be revisiting this then, we seldom ever do. Just a bit disappointed we never went in for Fernandes again as he would have far more suited us and also allowed us to lose Eriksen in the next few weeks. We can’t lose Eriksen now!!!

Im happy with the window, whether we keep CE for the season or not. Added two quality MFs and two bright prospects. Would've loved a third MF but Dybala was too good to be true and it seems like Sporting wouldnt budge on their inflated price for Fernandes.

Agree with most of your post.
I suspect the bold part may have an alternate explanation.

We may not have spent the money on Fernandes for the following reasons.
The fact that we came so, so close to signing Dybaba encourages me to believe that Spurs feel this deal still has legs & we may not be waiting until January to do it.

Levy & his team are probably still exploring options to resolve the 3rd party rights.
Once that is dealt with, I expect a quick deal.
We'll have our player while PD stays at Juve until January.

PD seemingly refused much higher wages at MU so he may not be all about the money.
The same may be said about PSG.

I guess it depends on how much PD wants to come to us & how willing Juve are to wait.

The money for this deal may have been CE money.

I don't know where everyone would have played otherwise.

If CE doesn't sign, we can't afford PD.
If CE he does sign, we can't afford PD.

If we are still interested and there is still a chance for January then I'd have thought the people to talk to are the company that own the image rights.
