pretty sure its just succession planning. there’s a good chance we lose Toby & Jan in the not too distant future, Sanchez needs to play a lot this season, and step up.

Might only be a weak explanation but the reason Dier might be preferable to Verts on the bench is that in theory he could play midfield too.

But dier cant play left back like Vertonghen can. Would have made more sense to have Vertonghen instead of aurier on the bench as Dier can cover RB. That would be the most balanced bench

Jesus Christ, it's one bloody game, if he hasn't had a look in after 5 or 6 then some of these reactions will be valid, if he's back in the squad next week then it's fine and you can unshit the bed...

Have to remember Jan is 32 no doubt we are succession planning but also no doubt some mind games from Poch to push everyone to work harder.

Use senior squad member as an example that no one is undroppable.
We will get more of this now the squad is better. I think this is a good explanation. Poch can push the players harder now and I think this is just a friendly prod to remind players that they aren't undroppable as well as push Verts to his best levels.

Really? Thought he was very good apart from the goal, where he was too worried about Wesley and not worried enough about the ball. He was strong, assured, and good on the ball.

We didn’t have to do much defending as they quite rightly sat back and tried to hit us on the break. And as you said, hid didn’t defend well for the goal. Tends to get embroiled in too many off the ball physical encounters, of which he actually often ends up coming off worse.

When Koscielny refused to play for them lot, the club come out and told the fans immediately, why do we cover things up from fans all the time?

Being completely transparent is a terrible way to run a club. The club do things to protect all parties involved.

The manager manages the players - we know he likes things to be private, and I prefer it 1000% to sherwood and ferdinand telling anyone who'll listen about what the players were doing and not doing.

I agree, but he was a big reason they didn't get many chances on the break. He sniffed out danger very quickly and was able to cover for just about everyone out there with his pace and reading of the game. He does need to stop trying to rough up every striker he comes up against and let the game come naturally to him, though.

We need to see more rotation in the defence to make sure that Davinson develops and Jan doesn’t get fatigued.

I don't think this is a big deal, his explanation about Dier covering 2 positions and also Aurier being able to cover either side made perfect sense, Jan was also looked a big sluggish in pre-season so at worse it's a kick up the ass. Fact he was at the stadium with the boys tells you that everything is fine in the long run.

I can’t imagine if there was any serious issue he’d have been sat watching and applauding at the end. But still all a bit odd.

Jan would at the very least in front of Victor.
All a bit weird. Jan was for ages a reliable performer.

fair point but I felt that some of the bench were the people in the shop window purposefully (Nkoudou also). Who knows but I think on this forum we're prone to jumping to conclusions about players and it turns out they were just left out for tactical reasons, Jan is a pro, even if its because he isn't doing it in training I'm sure he will step up. don't expect this to be a long term problem.

People spend years crying out for depth and more rotation, then get the hump when players are left out.

It's gonna happen a lot this season.
