I know, I thought similar.
I have already thanked everyone for the clarification and I never condemned or accused anyone of anything I just wanted to understand what was being said because for people not steeped in American sports commentary that is an unfamiliar term and in the context of the rest of the post was open to misinterpretation. If it stops these types of posts from perpetuating I am happy to delete my posts.

It's clearly an honest misunderstanding where, to be fair, you questioned it in a very reasonable way given how emotive it could have been. Think it's best you leave the posts as they are because I'd imagine a lot of people could interpret it the same as you initially did.

I watch a bit of American sports so was aware of the term - reading it back, I can see how lots of people could read it like you did.

Yes, in the context of speaking about Gabby Agbonlahor it reads very dubiously.
I think others explained it better than I ever could (thanks peeps). Reading the initial post it can read a certain way if you're not familiar with the term, so I understand why you questioned it.

Yep. And let’s be clear, Gabby Agbonlahor would still be an absolutely terrible pundit whether he was black, white or fucking purple.

The commentator is the guy who prepares stats and tells you everything that happens during the game, i.e. a Peter Drury or Clive Tyldesley, the colour commentator or co-commentator is the ex pro, manager etc who sits alongside them and chips in with their opinions. I think the general rule is that commentators bring facts while colour commentators bring opinions.

Colour commentators is a common phrase that just means not the main guy doing the play by play but the (usually ex pro) person chipping in. They add colour. It definitely doesn’t mean what you think it means
Whereas in todays game it means Robbie Savage is sat with a coloring in book and crayons and describes the doodling he is making.

Jose is an excellent pundit as is Wenger. Didn't like them as managers, but as pundits explaining the game I could listen to both of them for hours.

Yeah Jose when he was a pundit on Sky a few years ago was pretty cool, very interesting to listen too.

As described. It’s someone who adds colour to the commentary. As opposed to Carraghar who adds a bit of spit and polish.

Naah, keep them in, and don’t feel bad at all. You asked a reasonable question in a reasonable manner. I’m sure you won’t be the only one wondering and it will make it clear to others.

I’ve been in the US for years, was born in Australia and grew up in Palmers Green so sometimes even I forget where I got a certain phrase from. Colour commentator is a standard phrase in the US and has a specific meaning that has nothing to do with race. You weren’t to know that.

I wish someone would explain what the phrase ‘Colour Commentary’ means, just for clarification.

Don't delete them please.

It helps the rest of us who were equally baffled to learn something.

Yeah, keep that convo in because I'd never heard the term before and having it explained as succinctly as it was has made me feel slightly cleverer now than before I came into this thread. 😁

Peter Drury thinks that commentary is co-entertainment with the football.

not sure i ever expected to see such a comment on sc. especially as a typical matchday thread can be the equivalence of a 4 day drinking binge. (y)

Absolutely. it was clear it was a good-faith exchange re honest confusion. I was baffled that the term somehow slipped under the radar for some in the UK, but that may be because I'm a dual UK/US citizen that's been living in the US for decades.

I just assumed folks would know the meaning of the term as there's been so much incorporation of US sports vocabulary that's been evident throughout the UK media including this forum. It's good when these things are cleared up.
