I'm guessing Ange went for Kulusevski over Gio against West Ham due to his size and physicality. It didn't really work out as Kulu had a stinker, his form has been up and down this season and he is certainly in a down period at the moment. I think Gio will be off in the summer. Very good player but can't really contribute because he's injured so often. He's one we actually might get some money for as well. Hope he's involved in the run in though as he can make a big difference when he's on it.

Yeah in hindsight it seems obvious that Gio should have come on instead of Kulusevski but when the sub was made I thought it could be a good change as he might add some physicality and ability to carry the ball into that area of the pitch. However, Kulu had a stinker and so it looks like the wrong decision in hindsight.

Personally I was dumbfounded at the time for the first time under Ange. His other strange subs I've been able to rationalise with 'coming back from injury', 'about to make a second change that will explain this one' etc. but it was screaming out for Gio at that time and even if Deki is going to be here as the back-up number 10 next year he can practice that in training and pre-season, but on Tuesday Gio was clearly the more logical choice.

Going to be interesting to see what happens when we play Arsenal, Chelsea and Pool in a week. They will be three high intensity matches. I don’t really care how poor Chelsea are it will still be a high octane affair given the rivalry. Personally I struggle to see Gio not being involved if fit. Ether way Ange will have to rotate and keep the team fresh. I know it’s not the first time we have played three in a week but the level of opposition this time will require our full effort.
Totally. It would be disappointing if Madders and others got injured in the run in. These three games are pivotal for our push for 4th place. The whole point of a squad is to use it to its full potential to maximise an outcome. Gio is class and would give us options off the bench. If it was Kane would he not pick him?

It has to be this, Ange knows football and he knows how valuable Gio can be but Ange is thinking longer term about what he’s building and if he knows Gio is likely to leave this summer then better to give minutes to others who are in long term plans.

Shame as I love Gio, just hope Kulu steps up in that back up role for Maddison next season then if that is the plan.

Bergval and Donley should both be pushing for inclusion too. I'd love to keep Gio and give him a chance but it seems increasingly unlikely.

I think this is crazy. You do the best thing to win always. We need to get 4th and we can. Not giving yourself the best chance to do that is bizzare. Fucking play him until he isn’t here

I don’t buy this line that Ange isn’t playing GLC because he won’t be here next season and think it’s a load of bollocks. Ange is regularly playing Werner who is on a short term loan, PEH is getting plenty of minutes off the bench. Ange has made it clear he is playing to win and that doesn’t reconcile with not playing your best players regardless. Think it is no more complicated than Ange rates Kulu and is happy to back him even if he is grossly out of form.

This.

If he knows both GLC and Hoijberg (who has done well off the bench this season) are not going to be here next season. Then why give them more game time?

Ange has made it clear he wants players who are committed to the club.

Regardless of how good he is, getting Maddison, Sarr, Bissouma, Kulusevski etc more time to develop is paramount over players who are not committed.

Both GLC and Hoijberg have not signed extensions, Hoijberg clearly wants to leave and unless GLC signs a new contract then I doubt he will get more minutes.
You don't always need to be on a 4yr contract to be committed. GLC has shown his commitment in his performances this season. He has generally done well. He has been putting in tackles, he has been taken out by opposition, and more often than not has been the better player at connecting defence to attack.

Play the players that will help deliver the win.

If Donley was getting playing time over Gio, I would understand excluding GLC, but he isn't. He seems to be picking Kulu as the solution to everything in attack

Agree. As a generalisation my thoughts are if a player hasn’t performed in 4 seasons or so at a club then the chances of them suddenly settling in and performing is unlikely.

We never really knew the reason for Lo Celso not performing. Injuries, different managers, playing style and settling into life here among the obvious but no way of fans knowing to what degree any played a factor.

Lo Celso seems to be a rare exception and is performing despite a contract winding down.

I feel he deserves to play based on performance. It’s a good message to the squad as a whole too. If you’re professional and playing well, you get minutes on the pitch.

This is the thing with GLC. He's been here a long time and he's not a young player with potential either. If he can't be a regular starter there's not much sense keeping him. We're better off having a young prospect with his minutes because at least they have the potential to become a starter.

I think he can do the Bissouma role, tackle and recycle quite well. Should start vs forrest

I don't think Ange sees him as a 6 in his system. Honestly, he's much better further up the pitch but it seems like Ange knows GLC won't be with us next season and isn't too fussed to give him minutes.

Can't see him being here this season so reluctant to start him but think he's earned a start against Newcastle In place of maddison. Going to be one of those frustrating signings that doesn't work out but will go on to another club and will look top quality. Messi loves him and ballers know ballers but just hasn't worked out but hes very motivated to play well to get his permanent move this summer so hopefully he starts next Saturday
