‘I’d be sacked if I just won the Carabao Cup’ - Pochettino more interested in Premier League

The clubs that do win these trophies (City, Arsenal, Chelsea, United) have all had many seasons in the CL allowing them to increase revenue and squad size. So yeah, I can see his point, at the moment we are trying to maintain ourselves as a top four team and he has done a fantastic job with that. If we can get a cup along the way and it doesn't hamper our league performances then great but I am sure the plan is to keep the revenue coming in, get in the new stadium and then see if we can grow the squad and start being more competitive in all competitions.

To be fair we have had a couple semi finals. We are close to getting a trophy, maybe this season but if not I feel we can get something in the next couple seasons. Whether it is a cup or league....

Crap article in the Express today citing our old pal Duncan Castles... apparently the club feels they are spending too much on transfers (!) and wages and are looking to review our policy with a view to selling expensive players and focusing on cheapo talent. They are not fussed about Poch leaving as they consider winning the league too much of a stretch for what they are prepared to spend.
Jesus.

He is 100% correct, but is humble enough to not complete the rationale. 3 seasons in a row of CL footie is much, much bigger and more of a feat than winning one minor, national cup or even one FA trophy. The one trophy I think he should have given a real go at was the EL. He could have done it IMO.

I don't know why you call it crap. I think it is true, but organically speaking. When Dembele, Vertonghen, Lloris, Alderweireld, Sissoko all depart by natural reasons like wanting to move on or simply being too old, what you will find is that they will be replaced by young kids with cheap salary demands. But nobody will be forced out because they are too expensive.

Some people seem to forget or ignore that we actually have a decent record in the cups under Poch including a final & numerous semi-finals.
He prioritises consistency in the league & top 4 but he certainly doesn’t ‘throw’ the cup competitions.
And his point is correct; are we going to attract & retain top quality players because we win one league cup? No we’re not. All we do is shut up people like Paul Merson.

My apocryphal Jermaine Jenas story bears repeating.

JJ scores three,
heads two of the line
replaces injured keeper
and saves a penalty.

Old Spurs fan
to his mate
on the way out.
''Yeh but can he do it every week?''

The goal posts gonna keep moving.
Carabao? not tough enough
FA Cup? easy run with draw
League? a poor year for rivals
Champions League? That's not bad
but can they do it every year.

Just play well
and do your best boys
cups will come
as a by-product
not because we focus on them.

Shock horror levy isn't fussed about those cups.

Nothing new there. Really wish it wouldn't come up.

I agree in you for the most part, but I think the idea that we should or could have tried harder for cups is wrong.

Pochettino is probably coming at it from the perspective of we failed to win a cup, so what? not I don't want to win cups. I can't remember any occassions when we egregiously threw it away. Playing Vorm instead of Lloris shouldn't really effect our chances that much, plus we brought Lloris back for the final anyway.

I just don't undertstand the idea that we have chosen not to win these tournaments. It's not up to us. A cup run requires far more luck than a league campaign plus we have an intrinsic handicap that when we get to the bigger games we'll face teams with far more experience who are under less pressure.

I do think that early on (maybe his first season with us?), I thought there was a definite inclination to actively not care about certain trophies. But that all changed by the next season and since then on I believe he hasn't knowingly ditched any one tournament. However, I take multiple CL participations over one of the caribou-cups any day.

He got to the league Cup final in his first season.

conversely, and with all respect:

shock horror that fans are.

nothing new there. so it can't help but come up.

oh, of course. I certainly do.

but it still galls me in some miniscule way, however fiscally rational it may be. so you're not wrong; but it's always gonna come up.
