“I could have opted for an easier job. If I had gone to Tottenham..."

"I could have easily gone to Spurs. But I chose the biggest challenge of all the jobs in football. And I really wanted to join the number one club in the country, not Tottenham.

"Financially, Tottenham was kind of as attractive as Man United. But, in my eyes, Man United is still the number one club in England. Tottenham really is not."

I think generally it is easier for a coach to fix the defence than the attack.
Defence is about organisation which a coach can teach players.
Attack is instinct, coach can't teach.
Whilst that's undoubtedly true, I think it was still unwise of him to spend 160 million on transfers and end up with Jones and Smalling as his senior CB's still. In my mind United really don't have much time to waste in getting back into the top 4. Chelsea and City are as near as can be nailed on and will continue to get stronger, Liverpool look likely to finish in the top 4 and now have a squad full of promising youngsters, I can't see them letting their place in the top 4 slip after the bad times they've had in recent years and Arsenal now have their stadium debt paid off and can really spend in the transfer market. I think the ship for them to get back in amongst it may sail quite quickly. You only have to look at how far we have slipped in the last couple of years to see that if you're not competing in the top 4 your ability to attract top players and pay for them decreases while your rivals get stronger and stronger

Where did this delusion come from that United are bigger than Bayern, Real, etc?
I Man Utd is a bigger club than Bayern Munich because of its "brand". Bayern is much bigger in Germany than Man Yoo is in England but in the word especially the far east Man Utd is bigger.

I would say Man Utd is a bigger brand than Real Madrid(bar the galaticos eras) but Barcelona and Real Madrid will always be a bigger draw since they got their league sewn up(bar a hiccup) and they have the latin and dutch connection.

People from Argentina, Brazil, Netherlands, Latin America and etc want to play for Barcelona

Right, let's finish above this prick's team, beat them twice in the league and then knock them out of their last chance of silverware this season.

That'll learn him. Turkey-necked bell-end.

See nothing wrong with what he said tbh.
I don't think it's a big deal really - but he should probably have just focused on Man U instead of talking down about Spurs

I;m sure he was directly asked about us and if he regretted turning us down or whatever but he should have been more diplomatic in the way managers refuse to talk about potential targets out of respect for the clubs who currently own them

He could easily have said that Man U are the biggest/best club in England without having to say that we are not

As for his comments regarding the job being easier at Spurs - again there's no real need for him to say that, he could have just said how he enjoys the challenge at Man U whatever without trivialising our ambitions as a club

Furthermore its impossible to quantify what the harder job is - Ok at Man U they have more demanding targets for sure but they also have far greater resources with which to achieve these targets, so its all relative really isn't it?
(look at the money they've spent and the players they've brought in)

In order of bigness:

Real Madrid (ahead of Barca because of galacticos and Figo and ahead of United because of Ronaldo)
Barcelona
Manchester United

The rest of the biggies: Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and maybe Dortmund, AC Milan/Inter Milan/Juventus, maybe PSG...

This is the man who's been bragging about his work with youth development and who could work with tight budgets (which he did at AZ though).

After spending silly amounts of money during his first few months at Manchester United, Van Gaal said, “At Bayern, they would have stopped me. But do you know what United’s people do? They just keep buying!” De Telegraaf.

This is what grates with me. He's supposed to be one of the best managers out there. But give any middle of the road manager £150m+ to sign the best players in Europe, and they could be just as successful.

Throwing endless amounts of money at a problem is hardly showing your ability as a manager.

Funnily enough my Mrs is Dutch and I live in the Netherlands. As far as I have seen it isn't. If you class countries by how their sportsmen (or woman) act then it might seem that way. You should come over and sample it sometime. Amsterdam is as about as Dutch as London is English so come to the smaller towns and you will find they really aren't.
Fair point. I worked in Holland for a while and I agree. I was reflecting in the sportsmen in particular as they have this trait. That said, most of them are very successful.

He hasn't been successfully yet at United.
It's going to be interesting to see how they do.

For such an experienced manager he lacks class and has directly insulted our club.
I believe the pressure is getting to him or he is very clever and starting mind games.
God I hope we beat them at OT as I'm a local and work would be great also 3rd year on the bounce we ve beaten the best club ever in the whole wide world!!:)
Did I mention I had a tour of old Trafford with work, the referee gets a luxury suite and 3 tickets. fergie softening them up, so they play added time. Had a good crack with the steward and he took us to the crows nest. Best view in the ground. He said any questions? I thrust my hand up and casually asked (even though I knew as was in Stratford end) which goal it was we scored when the ball went 6 yards over the line and no officials spotted it! They only had to look at 70000 united fans with their heads in there hands. (Saved me a beating though) he just pointed and said SPURS!
I also nearly got caught wiping my nose on berbas top in changing rooms, I had a photo and my united work colleagues were not happy with my lack of respect. Goes in circles though so shut the duck up Louis, show some class and integrity!
