Friedel 7 - Default
Walker 7.5 - Thought he was lively and did a decent job at both ends
Kaboul 7 - bit rash with some challenges and lucky not to give away a peno
Dawson 7.5 - Thought was good for first game back. Didnt do too many long diagonal hoofs and was solid in the air. Good for his confidence
BAE 8.25 - Excellent. Great goal as reward

Lennon 7 - Decent shift, getting back to fitness and nice goal
Modric 7.5 - Solid, Modric standard game. Needs to add goals to his game
Livermore 8.25 - Best game for Spurs, was worried with Parker and Sandro out but he put in a great shift and had alot of ball and retained it well and ran his socks off. Plus some cruching tackles. Really pleased for him
Bale 7 - Frightening with the ball, but didn't see as much action as I would have liked

VDV 8.5 (MOM) - Ran the show today, was a class above. Clever in possesion and always looking to create something.

Adebayor 7 - Standard. Worked hard, held up the ball well but awfully wasteful. trys to be too clever sometimes.

SUBS:

Pienaar 7 - High mark for a sub, but looked really up for his chance. Used the ball well. Still think he is a useful player if needed.
Pavlyuchenko - NET

Some great performances from Dawson, Livermore and Modric, but the stand-out players for me were VDV and Benny. Even before his goal I thought Benny was having one of his best games. Some brilliant attacking play.

Not knocking his performance but did Lennon look a little slow today? Or was it just me?

I did mention it durng the game, regarding a couple of runs he had and a couple of passes.
Or maybe everyone else has got faster!

It was only a season or two that Hansen completely slated Benoit for his performance against Everton no less, wonder what he has to say about his display tonight..?

Possession the best form of defence.

That was a good nights work. Everton are really suffering from a lack of financial impetus, but they never seem to lack for effort, and always carry an air of menace, mainly because they have always characteristically had a never lie down attitude under Moyes and always seem to have a decent finisher in their ranks.

And so the not unfamiliar pattern developed as in many games recently at the Lane. We were faced with a hard pressing, well organised attack v defence, with a modicum but still occasionally threatening attacking ambition.

It would be an over simplification to say we were just too good for them, I've seen inferior looking Moyes inspired Everton sides give better looking Spurs sides a lesson on enough occasions to know that you have to play well to dominate Everton from start to finish, but that is pretty much what we did.

Some of our approach play is top class and wonderful watch, the likes of which we haven't enjoyed since Hoddle, Ardiles and Co entertained us 30 years ago. This side is possibly even better, but it also shares that sides fragility at times. That early eighties team didn't have a Parker or Sandro, and it certainly never had both, and that was the fundamental reason it could win cups but not leagues.

But I've figured something out I think, and here it is, our fragility is pretty much our rivals fragility. Arsenal, Chelsea, ManU and even to a degree ManC all carry an air of vulnerability. All seem to have attack biased formulas that give a decent opponent a glimmer of hope.

Personally I despair at some of the half hearted, effeminate pretence at engaging the enemy conducted by some of our team at times, Bale being the worst offender (There is no point closing the keeper down if you are going to literally jump out the way of his clearance) - BUt as long as we can keep 60%+ of the ball and we have some supremely gifted footballers then, maybe, just maybe, we have a shout.

Personally I think we look far more creative playing the 433, and we actually struggled to make quality chances tonight, with Lennon not making a single chance for anyone. Part of that was Everton's deep double layer defence for sure, but part is the predictability and easier format to defend, system of the four man midfield. Although I appreciate Bale does wander, as does VDV and Adebayor and this does help.

VDV was outstanding tonight. That pass for Bale was worth admission money.

Ratings:

Friedel 7 - Default mark, SFA to do that I remember.

Walker 7 - OK.

Dawson 7.25 - Rarely tested but had a good game and his distribution was calm and assured tonight.

Kaboul 7 - Again rarely tested and was good for the most part and carried the ball out superbly a couple of times, but was a bit clumsy toward the end I think - need to see it again, wasn't sure exactly what happened, who tripped who ?

Ekotto 7.5 - I don't always like Ekotto the defender, but there's a lot to like about Ekotto the footballer. Calm and assured on the ball, played a lovely pass for Lennon and scored a cracker.

Lennon 6.5 - Did really well for his goal, but was largely a peripheral figure and has got to be more involved. 16 passes in a game where we dominated the ball and made 582 as a team is a bit on the skinny side. Get involved.

Livermore 7.5 - A very competent performance especially in a 4 man midfield with Lennon, Bale and Modric. 76/77 passes. Fucking impressive.

Modric 7.5 - A good game offensively and sprayed some lovely passes around. Defensively very lightweight and it's a real shame that can't quite transpose his efficiency into the box. 78/90 passes.

Bale 7 - He's seeing a lot more ball in games. That's good. He influences the opposition sometimes by just being. But he wasn't great tonight offensively and defensively he's about as brave as Robbie Keane. 41/50 passes

VDV 8 - Superb. Saw more ball than anyone and was, as he is often, our most creative threat. 84/97 passes

Adebayor 6.5 - Not his best game and I think he should have done better with the chance VDV and Bale made for him, but he keeps working and seeing ball. 28/34

Friedel - Solid. Didn't really have anything to do. 6.
Walker - Good display. 7.
Dawson - Good in the air. Drawn out of position a few times by chasing the ball but no matter. 6.
Kaboul - On fire. Again. 7.
BAE - Was looking excellent all night. 9.
Lennon - Lively and took his goal very well. 8.
Livermore - Absolute monster. May be a one off, but if not we could have a serious player on our hands. 9.
Modric - Not quite at his best, but still very good. 7.
Bale - Didn't really seem at the races, but Everton did kick him at every available opportunity. 6.
van der Vaart - Just so very good. 9.
Adebayor - Missed chances again, but made his usual good contribution to our build up play. 7.

Friedel 6 - nothing to do.
Walker 7 - some great runs. Gets a little frustrated at times.
Dawson 7 - Solid.
Kaboul 7 - Solid as well but that was a pen he gave away from where I was sitting.
BAE 8 - Great performance. He is great going forward. Its his defensive positioning that has always worried me but he didnt need to defend last night.
Lennon 7 - Good goal but he didn't try too many runs last night. Still needs a bit more game time.
Modric 7 - Mr Consistant. Never gives the ball away. Wish he could shoot though.
Livermore 8 - My mom. Mopped everything up in the centre. Amazing performance. I didn't think he had it in him.
Bale 7 - A constant threat.
VdV 7 - Busy, busy performance. Good game.
Adebayor 6 - Wasn't that impressed. Spurned a couple of chances and didn't seemed particuarly bothered.

(Pienaar 6 - Did well when he came on. Looked nippy.

Pav 3 - not much match time but was pretty useless. Not running onto a through ball 'cos he thought he might be offside was criminal imo. Too lazy and it summed him up. Hope we get an upgrade and soon.
