Anyone who thinks Bale had a great game didn't see that game IMO. He scored two wonderfully taken goals. The rest of his contribution was very, very ordinary. He gave the ball away nearly a third of the time he had it, created very little and was positively shit when it came to helping his full backs.

He did a couple of brilliant things but was not brilliant tonight.

Without Bale I doubt we would have won, he had to be MOTM. He also had 3 or 4 other runs and could have scored 4. All our team were pretty much given the freedom of the pitch tonight and only he used it. I'm not saying he had a brilliant 90 mins but he was by a mile our most influential and game changing player tonight

I thought we were just ok tonight against a very poor side

We agree about Ledley, worst game I've ever seen from him and under very little pressure too!

Ledley made a last ditch sliding tackle that saved a goal scoring opportunity and Kaboul got the ball away, yet Kaboul gets all the plaudits...

I was disappointed with the poor use Bale made of that freedom most of the night. When you boil it down I really don't think his overall contribution was good. The ball by Modric for the first was superb, all he had to do was finish a very easy chance which he did with aplomb. The second was a goal out of nothing which was a superb piece of skill by him. But other that that what did he actually do in 90 minutes that tangibly exploited his freedom ? What had an end product ?

I can accept and credit the two very good pieces of skill that helped us win the game, and to be honest, if you called him a striker, his contribution would be good (ie 36 passes, two goals etc) but he's part of our midfield and that comes with the responsibility to help when we don;t have the ball - and he is shocking in this respect and costs us threat almost as much as he creates threat at times.

He's so good offensively this season that I understand the conundrum, but I can't say I enjoyed his 90, more like about 5 minutes of it.

I agree with these statements.

I agree with these statements.

The first goal was hardly a tap in. Stupid comment.

There were also the two saves he brought out of their keeper after two excellent runs and a good cross with his right that Ade headed narrowly over.

He wasn't part of our midfield after VDV went off as Ade was on his own; certainly not in the way Parker, Livermore, Sandro or even Modric are.

Criticism for criticism's sake as usual.

Friedel - 7 - barely anything to do, not at fault for goal
Walker - 6 - was scarcely involved, without Lennon we have limited options on the right
King - 7.5 - didn't put a foot wrong, so calm
Kaboul - 7.5 - tidy and was unlucky not to score
BAE - 6.5 - an enigma, began many attacks first half but was sloppy too - especially in the second half
Krancjar - 7 - worked hard, especially in the first half
Parker - 8 - tidily disruptive
Modric - 8.5 - brilliant distribution and energy, great goal
Bale - 8.5 - excellent dynamic display, what a player
VDV - 7 - got injured
Adebayor - 7 - frustrating at times, wasted possession

Subs:
Livermore - 7 - fine but doesn't set the world alight
Sandro - not enough time to judge - but was good to see him back
Lancaster - 7 - bright debut, almost scored, be good to see him involved more

Overall, it was a decent enough performance - up until we scored the third. We then went to sleep and ambled around like it was a training match.

At points I felt the team lacked shape and positional discipline - we played very narrow at times because Bale is allowed the free role - and Krancjar is not a natural wide player. We could have done with JD tonight.

Without Bale, there's not a lot of penetration. Judging players by how many touches and successful passes they make is all well and good but if it's not going anywhere and has no direction, how effective is it? Bale might lose the ball more than some players but only because he's prepared to do more with it, take more chances. I'd take that every day than someone who drops in and makes 20, 5 yard return passes to Modric so his stats look good. If you're judging football matches by stats We had over 65% possession against Watford yet looked bloody awful and didn't look like scoring.

Krankjar was really excellent all round last night. Some splendid one touch, and a very high work rate.

It's the first time in a while I've seen the midfield pressing high from the kick off and playing with real urgency, and it was that hard work in the first 30 mins that allowed us to win so comfortably (Yes I know they are woeful!!!)

We need to take that hard work away too and not sit back. That brings out the worst of us.

One thing I noticed last night was Kings massive loss of pace. It seems to me that he was scared to fully extend himself. Understandable I suppose if he doesn't want a muscle injury but still a bit sad to see.

Walker 5 - I remain non plussed.

Ekotto 6 - I don't like it when he wears big hair, it fucks with his game. He saw shit loads of ball but did several stupid things, doesn't close down properly at times, and should have been sent off because, not for the first time, his touch was strangely poor tonight several times.

So if Ekotto was as terrible as you made out last night, what was it that Walker did so much worse to get a whole point less?

This is the kind of thing sloth mentioned last week.

clearly Bale (MOTM) & Modric sorted this game for us.
others were good as well.

but i would give Adabyor special praise, he is the private solider in my books, he isn't scoring or assist that much, but he moving around final third, making himself available and move the ball around, this is key to Bale final production this season, he proved the difference than Defoe, Pav & Crouch last season.

now i think it's safe that our football don't know target man, we just need quick and busy forward, whatever short or long doesn't make difference.

Lancaster - Pacey and looks promising alot better off the bench than pav was anyway lol

can't agree anymore, he is active and Enthusiastic, and that's what we need upfront.

And who would know more about that than you with your very "personal" approach to criticism.

I didn't say it was a tap in and I gave him credit for his match influencing contribution. But defensively - and every single player including strikers have a responsibility to defend IMO, he was very poor, and he also didn't contribute enough offensively against a very poor opponent apart from two moments of very good skill.

Criticism for the sake of improvement actually. I like Bale and while he is producing these moments, and seeing more of the ball than he used to - something I have have continually praised him for this season (praise for praise's sake you would undoubtedly call it) I would persevere with him regardless, but he needs teaching and must learn to be more like Ryan Giggs for example and contribute more when we don't have the ball and make better decisions a higher percentage of the time.

I was pretty blocked (sore head this morning Eek) but one moment Bale was left, the next on the right and then in the hole behind Adebayor.

Its a pitty VDV went off after half an hour, I think had he stayed on we would of seen a more competent second half.

I thought we had some very good passages of play against a defensive Wigan. Very disappointed to concede a goal though. Ledley has looked off the last couple games, there was a few times last night where he seemed out of position.

I was glad to see Niko have some good touches but for the last 30 mins once the tiredness set in he seemed a liability. Modric was MOTM for me and Bale was the cutting edge we needed. What frustrates me sometimes is when we get close to goal our forwards stand with their back towards the goal which is good for holding up the ball but we lose that first yard to get past a defender. I'd like to see more through balls for our forwards to run onto at pace.

.

surprising to me, he was 4th highest in distance covered on the stream stats..

seems to be like rafa in busying himself and stealthily covering ground

he's like a busy **** letissier. had to laugh when he checked his dribble and took 3 markers out of the game..
