Hi

There are many different views on how good our last 3 seasons have been. I think each one of them has been good, but my favourite of the three was the last one (07-08). I'm sure I'm in the minority on this, but wonder which of the other two people will prefer - and maybe a few will agree with me too.

I bet this poll doesn't work - but here goes with the technology :)

Oh and sorry to disappoint you animal lovers - but the goat option is staying firmly in its pasture.

Whooh - hooh it worked -

Thanks Chrissi for the help :)

The first one - massive over-achievement after the disastrous post world cup banana skin.

We deserved fourth and were possibly and arguably fourth best team all season - just one slip up at the end. But credit to those players who over-achieved and were bullied to this result of fifth by the experience of Naybet and Davids.

The second fifth the following year was more in expectation and for me, a little disappointment, as we never looked comfortable in achieving that fifth place last minute.

Last season brought silverware and a huge sigh of relief and delight, particurlay as we took on - and beat - two of the best teams in the land, both of which privately would admit to wanting that trophy. However, our decline after that game was hugely disappointing again and our old achilles heel resurfaced to leave us floundering in mid-table, and most of us wishing the season could have ended a lot sooner than it did.

05/06 for sheer excitement for me. jol, keane, davids, and the king grabbed my attention after apathy had kicked in and dragged me back into hardcore thfc obsession and thfc into the limelight.
obviously 06/07 had quality moments: whufc win via that salty goal is the first that springs to mind and last year was nice as we won a trophy and had some more cracking games. still though, 05/06 just for me.

O5-06 no doubt about it. May have been our shortest, but every game counted. I remember going to West Brom at home near the end of the season when the Arse were right on our heels, and we were struggling to win the match. Got a last minute penalty which Keane tucked away. Walking out the stadium after the game on almost as much as a high as beating Arsenal a few years later.

I thought it would be between 06 and 07 - nothing for 07 so far - ah well early days

I also expected Defsta to be complaining about the lack of goats but fair play to you Defsta - commendable restraint :)

In my Spurs watching 1986/87. 3rd in League (but close), League Cup Semi, FA Cup Final. Only season I ever remember us in a title race.

Also, on a personal not had season ticket and went to most away games too. Glorious 3-0 away win at Villa Park on the opening day in the sunshine (it used to do that in August kids) Clive Allen scoring for fun and the first time I ever remember our defence looking solid in the air with Richard Gough. I was even under the arc of the all that flew off Mabbutt's knee for the winner at Wembley.

In those days you could still dream of winning the League.

Watching Gascoigne in 91 was the funniest and spanking the Arse at Wembley and running up and down the steps almost exploding with joy as the 2nd went in.

The first one for me for the simple reason that it's the first time we've been any good in ages.

No please do! I've heard so much about 61 team and I'd like a considered opinion. Were they the best, would they be too slow in he modern game. Are we in danger of the football didn't exist before Sky and only Premiership records count.

Lets face it, we did OK but a club with an illustrious history like ours, are we really only going to compare 3 mediocre seasons. 5th 5th & 11th + 1 league cup?

Its a grand old team to play for
and its a grand old team to see
and IF YOU KNOW YOU'RE HISTORY....

Easily the 05/06. It's the first time we'd ever been even close to good since the Premiership started. We'd been nowhere near Arsenal for years and all of a sudden we were leading them and in a CL spot for most of the season, with a pretty average squad of players. It was the first time a really begane to believe. Last season is by far the worst of those 3 for me. The CC didn't make it a good season, it simply stopped it being a total disaster.

Hi BC - as PT says that would need a new thread- this is about 05-08 - comparisons across generations are pretty impossible - but any reasonable view is that the period 60-63 is our greatest era - but I'm not discussing this on this thread!!!! :)

3 seasons only thank you :)

It's 06-07 for me. As good as 05-06 was we only played 40 games that season as we got humiliated in both cup comps by lower league teams. Also the teams around us, including Arse, were not that great. Our aim was at the start of that season to qualify for Europe and that was achieved.

07-08 was a complete flop for me apart for the CC. We were hopeless in the league and did'nt do ourselves justice in the UEFA cup. In the FA cup we were just unlucky to draw the best team in Europe away..

06-07 was best for me as we played tremendous footy that season. We had a fantastic campaign in Europe playing 10 games, winning 8 and drawing and losing the other 2. Our away performence at Besiktas was unreal aswell as getting a standing ovation at the end of the game. If we had got past Sevilla I'm convinced we would have won it!
We had a good run to the quarters in the FA cup and were mins away from knocking out the Chavs at the bridge.
We also had a good run in the CC. Losing eventually to Arse in the semi's. On top of all that we still managed to finish 5th. Yes our aim was for the top 4 but due to our poor start, sounds familiar eh, we were playing catch up from the start. Al in all it was a good season to be a Spurs fan. We were great to watch scoring and conceading goals for fun. We played almost 60 games that season, not many were dull affairs!!!

I see what you are saying and think you make some good points and on face value the 2006/7 season was better. But, I personally think we need to take into account the context of each season. The leap in difference between the 2005/6 season from previous seasons' was gigantic and I don't think anyone saw it coming. We were definitely improving and a team on the up, but at the end to the 2004 season, when Arsenal went unbeaten, if someone had said in 2 years time you'll be ahead of that lot going into the final day of the season, I don't think anyone would have believed them. We played more games in the 2006/7 season and competed on more fronts, but there wasn't the dramatic improvement we saw in 2005/6. The 2005/6 season established us as a top club once again, whilst the 2006/7 season just went to further comfirm this and continue our improvement. In terms of significance, the 2005/6 is far greater imo than any season for many years.

OK I apologise for being naughty and yes I'll go and stand outside the headmasters office at break (again).
I have stated this discussion on another thread, although I must object to being called old (even if I do expel air a lot).

A Grand Riserva Rioja is not old, it is mature and has a better quality than a Beaujolais nouveau.

I think we played better football under Jol..................................but you can't argue with a trophy in your first season.
