this is how long it takes Friedel to take a goal kick after the ball had gone out of play, to take an indirect kick after an off-side, or even to throw it after he has collected it. After he wastes so much time on the clock which allows to opposition team to regroup behind the center line, he kicks the ball up the field trying to aim for the shortest player on the pitch, as a result we lose possession most of the time in such cases.

Why do we keep doing this when we have so many quick players that can exploit the huge open spaces on the back? We scored two of our goals from such situations in the game against United and one against QPR, to mention the most recent ones, by moving the ball quickly up the field and taking advantage of the oppositions team attacking over commitment and our speed. Had the balls gone to Friedel in one way or another this would have never happened. The only thing that can make sure we win is scoring goals more goals, wasting time like this doesn't make sense in light of what the best way for us the score a goal is especially against a team full with slow legs such as United.

If your winning, especially at Old Trafford, of course your gonna try and waste as much time as possible! I do however agree that Brad's distribution is a little bit poor at times..

Nah, the reason we won is that we choose not to waste time for the second and third goal after we won possession, in both cases we were a goal up so by your logic we should have wasted time Friedel style, instead of trying to make the mountain that United had to climb taller. Protecting our lead against United at Trafford is what got us so much in trouble in the past.

Thank goodness Fergie didn't notice or he'd be throwing his toys out of the pram again.

Wasting time was the game plan. Pretty self explanatory.

20-30 seconds to release if after he has collected it? Give over.

players do what managers tell them to do in these tactical situations,... not really sure why we are discussing this on the heels of a fantastic Spurs victory though.

if the purpose of this thread is to besmirch Friedel because the OP does not like him, then this is a tremendous waste of time. furthermore, I do not see how AVB can bench Friedel for the next premiership match after winning 3 on the trot, including the historic victor at old $hiteford yesterday.

see why I was hesitant to reply to this thread? :yuck:

I do dislike Friedel's fondness of hoofing, but not enough to be bothered enough to make a thread complaining about it mere hours after winning at Old Trafford.

Exactly right. Although since Modric has left the OP obviously requires a new target.

Correct me if I'm wrong as my emotions were running wild at the time but i thought Friedel's long clearances towards the end were aimed at Bale

Surely the bigger issue is that it didn't look like Gareth Bale's boot-laces were quite the same length!

I mean yes we won for the first time at Old Trafford in 23 years but that shouldn't stop us looking for petty stupid little things to be negative about, and I think that this bootlaces issue is extremely serious.

AVB out!

I remember starting a thread about this on Coys after our game away to Fulham last season, Friedel would hoof it up the pitch time and again and invite pressure back immediately. It's one of his weaknesses as a goalkeeper, he invites a lot of pressure especially at the end of matches because of his distribution and because he doesn't come off his line.

Not having a go at him or anything, but I do think this has cost us points now and then.

Well that's just clearly not true...

I agree with that, giving the ball away cheaply, whether it is Friedel hoofing it or some of the CBs, is not the best way to keep possession, is it? But this is not why I started the thread, everyone so far who has replied in it has missed the point I was trying to make. Against a team like United we can't afford to sit on a one- or two-goal lead for two long, we shouldn't even do it against teams like Norwich or Redding, but we did and it costs us points in those two games, while against United it was damn close with them hitting the post and the crossbar. The more exposed were United last night the easier it should have been for us to seal the game out of their reach.
